Can Fulmer make solid coaching hires?

Every leader in business and coaching makes bad decisions and bad hires. Its the ability to quickly cleanup your mistakes, to adapt to whatever is currently happening and to anticipate what tomorrow holds. Thats my definition of a candidate. Pf doesn't fit my personal criteria.

I cannot see the logic to bring PF back at this at this point and for this position.

Bleeding orange be a huge factor in this decision....however, emotions should not dictate this hire. I suspect the universe of candidates for the AD position will include some excellent business management types.

That being said...Phil has been working in the investment/business sector since he left the program, and he may well be executing his ultimate game plan....this will be interesting to watch.

Politicking now.....but I expect the retoric will be ramped up soon.

The truth none of you know CPF or for that matter what kind of business man he is. Many people focus on what he did wrong not what he did right. Should he had been fired? YES!!! BUT...CPF led this program to the pinnacle of college football, many if not all of you loved him until the wheels fell off. He became complacent but the SEC got a lot better in his last 4-5 years. Better coaches took over at programs like LSU, Bama! georgia...

I know Coach Fulmer personally, he's a great man who loves this university and hates what is going on and knows he was part of the reason. Would he be a great AD? Who knows but I know he would love to right his wrong and get this university back on track

Fulmerites, get it through your frigging heads! Phil Fulmer is a feel good candidate and nothing more. I too have high appreciation for the man and doubt many if any loves the UT more than he. But would be a terrible AD, well-meaning but terrible. Biggest obstacle is his ego and self-presuming genius status. If the the UT is smart, and I do mean SMART, it will hire an experienced AD who also has CEO qualifications as well as personnel analysis skills. Then and only then will we avoid mis-hires and mis-retaining of ineffective hires. if the university can't understand that, to my dismay we deserve continued misfortune. Bless Fulmer but he just isn't right for what we need now for an AD. We need to feel good, sure, but more than that we need to right the UT athlete ship before if capsizes and sinks. You don't do it with a captain who doesn't know the difference between the stern, port, nor what a mast is.

All the more reason to go for a proven winner, and not roll the dice on a hire that will lead the AD for many years to come.

I fully expect Fulmer to campaign for the job, both publicly and behind the scenes. If he misses here, his days at UT are officially over.

Why would you hire the Captain of the Titanic to oversee the entire fleet?

Go Vols.

Outside of Chavis, and that is debatable to many, his staffs were terrible. Good thing we will never know for sure

Phil Fulmer is my first choice. If he were AD.....could he fire Dooley and rehire himself as coach?

No & Hell No! He hired Dave Clawson!!!!! Rather than shop around, he was loyal to his staff and promoted Randy Sanders to offensive co-ordinator.
He is 0 for 2 on hiring offensive co-ordinators. If Dooley resigned or was fired, Fulmer would try to get Cutcliffe back as our head coach and Chavis as the defensive co-ordinator. This is not a joke, I truly believe that he would try something that stupid!!!

We all know that Fulmer is a candidate for Athletic Director. We also know that Hamilton is was fired for making very poor coaching hires. That said, Hamilton’s replacement better be able to make good coaching hires. Can Fulmer?

David Clawson and Randy Sanders make me think that he can’t.

When Fulmer became head coach, he had John Chavis and David Cutcliffe by his side for years. When Cutcliffe split to become head coach of Ole Miss, Fulmer was forced to make his first major staffing hire. Who got the nod? None other than Randy Sanders. When Randy Sanders flopped, Fulmer had to make another major staffing hire. Who did Fulmer choose, David Clawson. After another OC turned out to be a failure, and our team stuggled, Fulmer was shown the door.

All due respect to Fulmer, but I seriously question his ability to make good or even adequate staffing hires. I also question his ability to run a $100 million business considering his has zero experience running an athletic department.

Fulmer is a great man and a terrific ambassador for our University. His love for Tennessee runs deep. While I appreciate his desire to help the University in any way possible, I think it would be a mistake to bring him in to be the next athletic director.

Fulmer is not a candidate for the job. Fans and media types have made it out that he is but I guarantee he isnt. Hopefully the next AD wont have to make any coaching hires anytime soon.

Also worth considering-

If the time came he would have to make a football coaching hire, I cant help but think he would be ify to bring in someone who would be considered better than himself.

Haha. Perhaps ol' Phil has plans to get the AD job, then install himself as the next football coach? Highly unlikely, but would make for a volnation meltdown only the likes of LK could bring about.
