We all know that Fulmer is a candidate for Athletic Director. We also know that Hamilton is was fired for making very poor coaching hires. That said, Hamilton’s replacement better be able to make good coaching hires. Can Fulmer?

David Clawson and Randy Sanders make me think that he can’t.

When Fulmer became head coach, he had John Chavis and David Cutcliffe by his side for years. When Cutcliffe split to become head coach of Ole Miss, Fulmer was forced to make his first major staffing hire. Who got the nod? None other than Randy Sanders. When Randy Sanders flopped, Fulmer had to make another major staffing hire. Who did Fulmer choose, David Clawson. After another OC turned out to be a failure, and our team stuggled, Fulmer was shown the door.

All due respect to Fulmer, but I seriously question his ability to make good or even adequate staffing hires. I also question his ability to run a $100 million business considering his has zero experience running an athletic department.

Fulmer is a great man and a terrific ambassador for our University. His love for Tennessee runs deep. While I appreciate his desire to help the University in any way possible, I think it would be a mistake to bring him in to be the next athletic director.

If Fulmer can't make good hires on his football staff then I do not see a logical reason for anyone to think he will hire good coaches for the whole AD.

Fulmer as AD is pretty much a nightmare for this program. Granted he loves Tennessee blah, blah, blah, but keep in mind, if he loved UT so much why did he run the program into the dirt as HC.
I just hope the people making decisions in Knoxville come up with a better option than Fulmer as AD.

If Fulmer was to be AD and was to get rid of Dooley then i am through. If all these people want Fulmer give him another job NOT AD. Everyone blames Clawson and blind to see that everything goes through the head coach. So some of the blame for Clawson goes to Fulmer too. Wake up people.

My BIGGEST concern is not making good hires, but the fact that he is too nice of a guy to make good FIRES.

He's too laid back like me, and has trouble making those tough, possibly unpopular decisions..... with staff or students.

Also worth considering-

If the time came he would have to make a football coaching hire, I cant help but think he would be ify to bring in someone who would be considered better than himself.

the most important decision fulmer ever made was what to eat....and he failed that one too...he loves UT like it was dough nuts.....what a bad joke if he is being considered.....what a nightmare if he actually is made ad.....i can't say what percent of fans do not want fulmer but i think it is significant and hiring him will hurt UT athletics....on the other hand, it would be good for thread topics.....he can replace pearl and ham as the village idiot

Ditto. Clawson had to use the players he had, no different than Dooley or Kiffin. The program's demise was not Clawson's sole fault in my opinion. Fulmer had become lazy and complacent.

The OP stated the exact reason I wouldn't want Phil for AD. Not only did he not make good hires, he failed to dismiss coaches who could not coach their positions. He was loyal to a fault, and in the end, when he HAD to fire Sanders and hire a new OC, he blew it.

Fulmer has orange blood and loves UT as much as anyone does.

I love Fulmer and appreciate everything he did and still does for UT.

As our AD he would FAIL miserably.

Fulmer as our AD would set us backwatds for 10 years or more.

He's NOT a businessman and has no experience that would justify him being our AD over a $100 Million enterprise.

He's a really nice guy but he FAILS at making the tough decisions to fire people that need to be fired.

He also FAILS at being able to properly evaluate people and their experience and skills to fill important positions that need to be filled.

I love Fulmer but I would say NO WAY to him being hired as our next AD if I had a vote in this process.

VFL...GO BIG ORANGE!!!

I agree with everything you say Titan except for the business end. A top CEO doesn't REALLY run the business, he has assistants to do that. What his basic roll is to make decisions and HIRE the right individuals to put in the different departments to run things. I couldn't trust Phil to do that. I would put good business sense about third on my list.

Fulmer couldn't hire good coaches, when he was the football coach. What makes anyone believe he could hire good coaches as the UTAD?

The bottom line is that Fulmer took the UT football program from the top of the mountain and ran it straight into the ground. It was all his own fault. Now we have people who want him to run the UT Athletic department and it's $100 million budget?

Do you folks have any freaking common sense?

Can't think of another. Likely because there isn't one. And keep in mind Chavis got progressively worse under Phil.
