While I have been highly critical of Crompton at times this year, I ended up having to stick up for the guy tonight because some were being way too harsh towards him.
He was terrible, for the most part, this year, but I thought back to 2005, and you know what? He wasn't as bad as Ainge was that year.

Granted, Crompton has been in the program longer than Ainge in 2005, but if you look at the numbers, Ainge was worse (or just as bad) that year than Crompton was this year, both of which were their first full year as starting quarterback.

And if anyone thinks otherwise, I dare you to go back and watch the tapes of the LSU game from 2005 and still say that Ainge was that much better.

Erik Ainge- 2005 Year end Stats
2005:
66-145
737 yards
45.5%
5 TD
7 Int

Jonathan Crompton 2008 Year end stats:
2008:
86-167
788 yards
51.4%
4 touchdowns
5 interceptions

With a new offensive coordinator (and possibly a few growth supplements), Ainge was able to turn things around his last years.

Who knows? Maybe Crompton can turn it around next year. It would actually be the most beneficial situation for the team. It would mean that we wouldn't be forced to put too much pressure on T. Boyd until he is ready to take over the reins, similar to what Cutcliffe did with Eli and Romero Miller.

Granted, sometimes you wonder if Crompton is all there in the upstairs department, but it would be beneficial were he to step up and be a leader.

Your proof? Ainge was pitiful in 05, and turned out to be an efficient quarterback with some decent coaching.

BUT, Ainge had that shoulder injury that left him mentally freaked out for the 2005 season. He seemed terrified of being touched by the defense and that reflected in his play. Crompton, however, has no excuses for his poor play.

Ainge was an intelligent individual. Crompton is as dumb as a box of rocks. I am a senior at Ut and have met them both.

Yeah, after next year he can turn his car around and head back to Waynesville, NC, and apply at his local Home Depot.

He threw one good pass. Even a blind squirrel finds a nut every once in a while. I look at his previous 4 games as proof. I'd like to be optimistic here, but find it hard to be.

Ainge had an attitude his sophomore year, hands down.

He even admitted as much. Crompton was gunshy, and there's no excuse, but there was obvious something wrong with him mentally this year. I don't know what it was, but if it could be fixed, he might end up decent.

What else is there to do? Neither Coleman nor Stephens showed anything to put faith into them being even a transitional quarterback.

The fact is that Crompton had the best game out of all of our quarterbacks tonight. there's no arguing that point.

We can give the reins over to a true freshman, which I am not opposed to, but it would be nice to have a senior so the team could break the freshman in slowly.

I'm all for Tajh Boyd coming in and proving himself as the starting qb on the first day, but it would be nice to have a senior quarterback who could at least be there in case it takes Boyd a little time to adjust to the college game.

No, Crompton will never see a meaningful snap of competitive football again. We won tonight and he had 3-4 positive plays that were easy to make. He is nowhere near good enough to play QB in the SEC.

The thing about Ainge was that he showed he had the talent to be a good SEC QB in his freshman year. Crompton has not.

Maybe not, but what have the other quarterbacks done? NOTHING. Tonight was the best performance by a UT quarterback this season. Case closed.

Until Boyd comes onto campus, we are still stuck without a quarterback.

Yes, but Ainge was not expected to shoulder the load his freshman year, as Crompton had to do this year.

Ainge was able to rely on two 1000 yard running backs in the backfield, not to mention a very solid WR core. Crompton had to rely on Arian Foster, and whether or not Hardesty could get through VolWalk without pulling a hammy. Creer seems to have some talent, but he wasn't used prominently til too late in the year.

For all the faildozer comments, or negatives...

What would you suggest? If it takes Boyd a month or so to adjust to the speed of the college game...

Which quarterback proved a damn thing this year? None of them. Crompton at least put together one solid, mistake free game, which was the best performance out of all the quarterbacks currently on the roster.

no, how many times , even in this UK game, did he hold the ball too long? almost every down, a few scrambles for first down and you think there is light at the end of the tunnel, nope

Abeachvol,

What do you suggest? Who was better this year?

A few scrambles? He also went 6 of 8 for 103 yards and a TD. Most importantly, we didn't turn the ball over tonight.

Boyd's the longterm solution, but not one quarterback did anything to prove that they had what it took to get the job done. Crompton, in the end, is the only quarterback to play a complete solid game this season.

If Kiffin announces Crompton as the starter next year, I wonder how many fans will turn against Kiffin? Who knows if Boyd will be ready? You can't put all you're faith yet on Boyd.

That's why I hope crompton can at least show that he can be adequate next year. If not, we're going to have to put a lot on the shoulders of a true freshman, which is never an ideal situation.

Kiffin's got to coach up one of the QBs in a major way or we will have more problems next year. I think Stephens has more potential than Crompton--who holds onto the ball way too long--but we'll see what the next group of coaches thinks.
