The UCLA game 27 years ago taught me to never go to an early season game in the middle of the day. People (including my wife and Smokey) were dropping like flies because of the heat.
I was at that game!!! Was with some high school buddies and there was EMS people every other section because people were having heat strokes. I think that might have been AstroTurf field in 1992-93??

Over an hour to go before kickoff against basically a FCS team, next week will be the measuring stick.

The UF game in 2016 was the hottest game I’ve been attended. It was miserable, except for the comeback.
Well that UCLA game was special. We knew back then we would win so me and my Hess buds spent the game watching sweat beads roll down a smoke show in a sun dress!

That was the one when Manning was still here, Smith had pick six and McClesky had a wingback reverse for a TD?
No, that particular game was in '91. It was hot! Poor Smokey later died, IIRC.

UCLA played at UT in '96. It was hot then, too...but not like the '91 game.

I was at that game, easily the hottest game I’ve ever been to! I took my wife to that game it was her first, I figured she’d never go back! Ha

Between the heat, cupcake, and the last decade it's understandable.

Killing Boomsday didn’t help either. Use to be easy to convince my friend group of UT grads to road trip to Knoxville for opening weekend and Boomsday. Since Boomsday was killed my group hasn’t been back for opening weekend and I’ve only made a few of them

Hour and 6 minutes away from the Vol Walk and there’s just a handful of vol fans scattered around. Doesn’t bode well for opening game attendance.

It is Day 1 of the season and they are playing Georgia State. You expected more? Welcome to reality, Cody. It is the downside of playing a program considered a cupcake. By now, I would think many more are there. But what you just witnessed is the state of how it is right at the moment. Now, it is time for this bunch of players to impress. If they do, things will improve. But if they don't, expect the same of worse when Chattanooga gets here. Playing a cupcake keeps fandom low. We don't want to become diabetics.

Peeps have been begging fans not to attend games for years. I guess they finally got what they wanted.

Easily remedied by winning and playing a dominate brand of football. Many who would come are at home for this, until the team proves itself. When they happens, so will the attendance.
