100% depends on the time of day.
Very true. I used to park on the southside and take the train up to Lenox Mall when I was young and blissfully naive. But, it was always daytime. Been told the Lenox area ain't the glitz it used to be though. I used to walk downtown some. go eat at Beni Hana. Dessert at Nicks or whatever it was around the corner. Made a pedestrian turn onto alabama street and almost had a heart attack, but no issues. also daytime. It wasn't troubling at all for me to take off by myself and just go do what I wanted if I wanted to eat somewhere or something. I wasn't a clubber, so I didn't face those dangers. But, I also probably went places that I'd worry about now if my kid went to those same locales. Part of me says it was the south and hospitality was always existant if you didn't stir the pot.
The only thing that truly spooked me was on a date. We drove up there. Ate at Beni Hana. Went up to the dessert place. It wasn't Nicks, but it was accross the street up toward the Omni Hotel and uber popular with the haughty. Piano Bar downstairs. Restaurant upstairs. But, they were known for crazy good desserts. Walking back a dude jumped from behind a dumpster behind Nicks. Scared the crap out of me. But all he did was ask for $5 to join the salvation army. I just laughed and said he could do that for free and he could have the $5 anyways even if it was going for a bottle of ripple tonight. Normally, I'd have offered a meal back then, but I was on a date, and his story was too good to not give him$5. Cool thing about that place is that as upscale as it was, there was a table of 4 homeless that someone apparently took them up and paid for them a sit down meal. And the place waited on them like they were anyone else. Always respected that. Wish I could remember the name. Not sure if still open now. Was a long time ago.
Been on English Avenue in daytime too. Though I'm told I'd not have faired well on that excursion had it not been for the company I was in. And to never go in there (The Bluff) without my property escort.
ATL is no different than any other large downtown area. Things can and do happen. There's also good things. Be smart about where or when, and you'll be OK. The other side of the interstate surrounding The Varsity is Midtown area, and is a cultural melting pot.
