Speaking at the NFL combine on Sunday afternoon, the former Tennessee cornerback gushed about the redshirt freshman quarterback who might be the Vols’ Week 1 starter this fall.

“He’s not a guy who’s scared to be out of his comfort zone,” Sutton said. “He comes to the defensive side of the ball, and he wants to learn. I picked up a lot of things talking to him, and we bounced some ideas off each other, just to help his game overall. He didn’t play much last year, but I’m definitely looking forward to him stepping up into that role this year.”

Sounds like Malone tends to disagree.

“I had a good year, and then my quarterback was leaving,” Malone said Friday. “Just with the change and the freshman quarterbacks and trying to play through their growing pains just really wasn’t going to be worthwhile. So I just went ahead and took the chance.”

Let's drop Malones comments already. We already went over this so many times. He wasnt calling shots at the new QB's.

He left for similar reasons cordarelle and justin hunter left. A Good junior year with question marks next year at quite a few positions, it makes complete sense. Give the guy a break.

Also, JG is going to be fun to watch develop, look out for Brandon Johnson as a go to receiver next year.

Are some people saying a first year starting QB might struggle in the SEC as they gain experience?

So hypothetical here. Admittedly, I've seen very little of JG. What do you guys think the actual possibility of him being good enough to lead the team to win the east is? Or do you think we just lost too much talent all around?

I've heard it said that "you don't catch Guarantano's passes...

You survive them."

Don't assume Dormady will not be the man under center.

If I'm QD and I'm not the starter at the close of Spring Practice, I'm going to find some place else to play ball. QD may have more pro potential than any QB we've had since Peyton.

If he is as great as you say he will start, if JG is better he should start. Nobody is owed nothing till they earn it. End of story. GBO!!!!

I would hope and expect it to be a wide open QB race until mid August. Alot can happen between spring and fall practice. If let them keep competing and studying and if QD loses and leaves at end of fall camp, he still has to sit a year I think if he goes to an FBC program, if I'm not mistaken.

Doubt they even hint at the starter by then. This goes to the end of Fall Camp.

Yes, and he has a redshirt year unused for the transfer year.
