Also look for the highest pixel number you can. The quality of the photos will make a difference.

the 10.0 megapixel from Nikon (S550, I believe) was going for $169.

There aren't really any "bad" camera companies, just those that are better. And those would be Canon and Nikon, in that order.

I agree with the first part. Unless you are making big prints of your pictures, megapixels are overrated. Lens quality should come first.

My ranking would be Sony, Canon, Nikon and then the rest. Sony's are clearly the best imo, but the price usually makes a canon a much better option.

^ Nikon and Zeis are the two best optics companies in the world, IMO, Canon's sensors are what makes their cameras. You can't go wrong either way, except maybe for the fact that Sonys only use Memory Stick. Although I will say that Sony's T-series is hands-down the best compact camera in existence.

just bought the Nikon Coolpix S210 for my girlfriend for Christmas. They are nice cameras. Got mine at Best Buy for $119.

That's what I went with except in the Plum color. The features, the apparent quality of build, and the good reviews swung the deal. Best Buy is the only reasonably priced place you can still find it in stock. That camera is sold out all over town, except at the places that want an outrageous price.

Nikon lenses are good, but nowhere close to a Carl Zeis Sony. I think we've had this discussion before. However, I love the way Canons set up and their price typically blows Sony out of the water.

I went with the blue one because my daughter already has the plum colored one. All they had in the store was the plum one, so I ordered mine online right there in the store. Still hasn't arrived at the store yet, but hopefully it gets there soon.
