Guys, with this whole BOT meeting thing today, at some point, would one of you mind posting a brief synopsis of what was said about the academics vs. athletics topic and how it relates to our current situation with football? I think hearing something more concrete from one of you two (or both) would help calm some posters' nerves on here.

TIA. :hi:

I'm not much on the politics. the amendment that was on the agenda passed. I never did figure out what the actual words meant and the explanations I got never jived either.

what that means to me, in laymen terms, is that Dave Hart manages the funds coming in through the Tennessee Fund office with the university still having over sight. They have been having over sight for the last 18 months so that is not a change.

I'm guessing clairty was made via BOT approval on teh management aspect of those funds.

best I can do. :)

So then Larry (or anyone), do you think this improves Gruden's (or any big coach's) chances of coming? It seemed like this was the big hurdle to overcome. Is this as huge for our football program as I think it is?

What happened with the easement on the dairy farm? That's kept me up at night for weeks.

I think that the AD will now report to the newly appointed Interim VP for Development and Alumni affairs, meaning that Hart will no longer report directly to the Chancellor.

The guy in that position, Scott Rabenold has been an assistant AD and has extensive experience in athletics.

Awesome news.

Simplify it folks... Does this bring us any closer to resolving cheek/hart conflicts that are supposedly holding back the program?

This is accurate. The way it was described to me is that it changed the reporting structure of an individual or two with development responsibilities in the AD. Before today, they reported to the UT Foundation (which is separate from the university). After today, they now report to the development folks at UTK. Basically this aligns all the development aspects in the AD with the reporting structure. All is now under UTK (the Chancellor).

Honestly, I think this was more of a formality than any great change. It just cleans things up a bit, but at the end of the day, doesn't mean much. As some have hoped for on here, it does nothing to change the fact that Hart reports to Cheek.

From what I have read... is not do all end all, but a step in right direction

Not trying to be a downer or start anything, but this is not correct. If this was true, this BOT meeting would have been all over the media and said agenda item wouldn't have been last on a lengthy agenda.

Even if this was true, it wouldn't matter because ultimately Hart would still report to Cheek, just with a layer between them. As long as it's under UT-Knoxville and not the system, foundation, or other campus, Cheek is the boss.

I know this is East Tennessee and UT, but putting the entire AD under someone at Rabenold's level is laughable at best.

AD fundraising, not the AD as a whole.

In 2010, the University realigned the reporting structure for the UT Knoxville Athletics Department so that it now reports to the Chancellor of UT Knoxville rather than to the President of the UT System. To align the reporting structure for the development efforts of the Athletics Department with the reporting structure for the Department as a whole, Chancellor Cheek proposed that athletics development personnel report through the UT Knoxville Vice Chancellor for Development rather than directly to the President of the Foundation.

This new alignment will build strong collaboration between the academic and athletic fundraising teams at UT Knoxville. President DiPietro, on behalf of the University, and Johnnie Ray, on behalf of the Foundation, strongly support Chancellor Cheek’s proposal. To accomplish this change in the reporting line, an Amendment to the Affiliation and Services Agreement, which was approved by the Board of Trustees is June 2011, is required. The proposed Amendment follows. In accordance with the terms of the Affiliation and Services Agreement, the proposed Amendment has been submitted to and approved by the Comptroller for the State of Tennessee.

MOTION: That the proposed Amendment to the Affiliation and Services Agreement between the University and the University of Tennessee Foundation, Inc. be approved to change the reporting line for athletics development personnel at UT Knoxville.

From the pdf so you don't have to dig. Any scholars here?

don't think it matters as far as Gruden is concerned. his is only "big coaches" name I've heard.

I had Gruden at less than 10% chance to be here up until about a week ago. At that juncture, everyone that I've talked with says he isn't coming so I reduced to less than 5% chance. He is an NFL guy and that is where folks see him going.

this amendment does not address the academic requirements that are the issues between the athletic and academic sides. the BOT meeting had nothing on agenda, to my knowledge, that would address any of that.

those issues are still present. Those issues have built up over 10 years. removing Cheek is only a start to resolving them and it might take years to get where they need to be

Thanks, Larry. Also, thanks for stating your opinion on Gruden. That rumor that he's coming needs to be put to rest.
