California cutting baseball program

It looks like the author really bombed it by writing that baseball at Cal dates back to 1982.

This is very surprising. A BCS school in California is just about the last school I'd expect to drop baseball of all sports.

Hm. Oregon was without a baseball program up until a couple years ago, which played a large part in Oregon State's run from '05-'07.

And LOL @ what ukvols pointed out. Glossed over their two national championships, perhaps?

Cali isn't exactly the most financially stable state right now

I think Oregon's lack of a program had more to due with the weather during college ball season and the lack of funds to have the proper facilities, until Nike stepped in.

But that is sad for Cal. They are in a prime spot to be a great baseball program and have produced some good players, including Smokies OFer and 08 1st round draft pick, Brett Jackson.

The main problem is we already fund far more sports than the average university. Title IX is what killed Cal baseball.

Jeff Kent too. Cal baseball just never was as good as it should been and as a result the money for new facilities never came.

Oregon had a team for a while, dropped it, and added it back recently. Ray Smith who coaches the elizabethton twins now played there before playing pro ball for a while. That was a quite a few years back though.

Make sandwich making a sport, it will teach women life skills and if you go bologna and white bread it will be quite cost effective. Problem solved.

Edited to reflect reality. The only two sports that matter, men's basketball and football, are doing just fine.

one thing that came out from all of this was that our women's basketball program lost more money than any other program at Cal, yet the coach is by far the highest paid after montgomery and tedford. begs the question as to why we are supporting these sports no one gives a crap about.

With the masses of land that D-I conferences cover, I'd be surprised if any sport aside from basketball and football actually operated in the black.

rugby, crew and others make a profit at cal, but taht is because they have an endowment. but you are currect. only a handful of women's bball programs make money and many football programs don't even make money.

Most D-I football programs lose money. The only people making money are the big boys in the conferences with the Mega TV deals.
