All the line means is that the experts who set lines believe equal money will be put on Cal and the Vols at that spread.

So what its really saying is that the general betting public believes Cal will win by > 6.5. So basically a lack of respect from the college football betting public. Guess the general public still isn't too impressed with the state of our program.

You had it right in the 1st sentence but missed it in the 2nd. It means they hope one-half of the general public believes Cal will win by 6.5. That line will move down before kickoff. Factor in home-field and it's a little less.

we'll a lot of gametime experience returns from last season (the guys who will replace the olineman we loose played a lot and played well) so our starting line will have a lot of experience. if one or two of those guys goes down it could be a issue.

If OP shows us where he saw it, yeah, it's valid. Vegas knows that John Q. Bettingpublic reads their preseason magazines for a month or so, then bets the first week. The preseason magazines say Cal is better. The line was a little bigger than I anticipated (if this is the line), but I expect Pinnacle or Bookmaker to wait longer to open theirs.
