I have charter cable and internet right now. I've had them for almost two years now and I believe I've had enough. They have always found ways to screw up billing, they don't have great HD variety I feel like, and they also seem expensive. I pay $160 for digital basic, slow "high speed" internet, and two hd boxes. I'm considering switching to DirectV. Would this be a good alternative for cable at least? And what are some good options for internet providers? I'd like to be in the $100-$120 range for both. DVR would be a great extra as well. Any advice? How's Uverse with Directv?

Uverse is terrible. You will pay out the ares for "high speed" internet. Verizon FIOS is great if you are in their footprint. Honestly, im not sure how Charter is, but you can drop the TV and just get internet, then get Dish or Direct for your TV. Charter is a very weak company as far as what they offer.

At least you have options. Mediacom has a total monopoly on everything here. Their customer service is rubish, but prices are fair and internet is fairly fast for the US. With that said, I have DirecTV at my new apartment. It's okay...

Previously had DSL (6.0) from ATT and DirecTV. Was satisfied. Move and switched to Uverse. When it works I like it - 18 mbps and a ton of HD. Problem is that they can't get a clean, consistent signal to my house and the HD is highly compressed - stills looks pretty good. Also, it's highly discounted for the first year. If I stay for the year (assuming they get it working right) I doubt I'll stay for the second year at regular price.

I miss the NFL package from DTV - miss it so much.

I completely re did my TV set up. Got a quad tuner with a cable card, and got a 2 terrabyte hard drive, basically an infinite DVR. Use media center as a controller, and hub. Hard wired ethernet ports in all my rooms. Set up the tv on the net, and got a user ID and password to access Sunday ticket. The future of TV is going to be web based anyway. In the next 8-10 years, cable as we know it will be gone.

hmmmmm, not real sure what you just explained there, but from what I can understand, it sounds interesting. How feasible is it really to give up tv service and use the internet as a replacement?

After having Charter for 7 years, we moved and I switched to DirectTV and TDS FiO internet. Both are infinitely better. I can't believe I put up with my Charter service for so long. The DVR box probably has 10-20x the hard drive space of my old Charter box, and the whole-home DVR is wonderful. You will have to check to see if you are offered fiber optic 'net service (TDS, Verizon, ...). If so, you will be blown away by the speed.

With hulu and netflix along with watch espn, not too bad. That's where everything will be going anyways.

How about directs two year warranty? Of I were to move to Charlotte half way through my two years, I could transfer my service with me correct? I'm not under contract with charter which is a nice feeling though overall I'm not happy with them.

Does directive beat $160/month for two HD boxes, digital basic ultra type channel lineup, and about second tier internet? I looked on their website which is full of large font overwhelming "specials". I'd like to hear first hand how reasonable their rates are.

We have AT&T Uverse, switched to it from Comcrap in July. It's worked fine for us. The HD channels are great, picture quality is good, internet (max) is really fast. The only thing I don't like is only 4 HD channels can be active at once. It's only been an issue whenever my family has HD channels recording and others are trying to watch HD tv. I do like that you can access DVR on any receiver.

I switched from Direct to Dish back in March. Saved a lot of money. Currently have TDS 15mbps dsl, TDS regular phone and Dish 250+ pkg with the 2 HD dvr's and a regular hd box. One DVR has the Sling box loaded in it. $140/month for all for the first year. Goes up $20 next August.

Is the $20 the second year rate? It seems lower than what I've been seeing. My charter bill almost doubled after six months.

I have Direct with 1 HD and 2 standard boxes and Charter internet.
I'm paying about $160 for everything but you can get a good deal with Direct for 1 ST year. Hughes Internet is another option. It' s around $50 per month. I believe you can bundle it with Direct.

For those with Charter: go to a local service center when you are due for a rate increase and ask for a new special. It worked for us every time.

When I moved recently, I closed my existing account rather than transferring and opened a new one to get the 6 month special again. Times ticking on that though.

I have Uverse as well. I've had Time Warner, Comcast, and Dish network before. I like Uverse so far.

DishNetwork - it's the best. Will never go back to cable

Clear - best internet service I've ever had...

it's great except when there is bad weather out and your service goes blank in the middle of a tornado

but isn't that an issue with any satellite provider?

assuming good signal, which one is better, Dish or Direct?

I guess but I've seen Direct TV go out even when it was just raining outside.

I have never personally had Direct TV, but I have used it at a relatives. I liked the pricing of my Dish Network when I had it.
