BYU fan here, what to expect from us in our game

Yeahhhh be sure and tell Vandy and Mizzou that next time we play em...This team needs to play every single game like its a title game or they could easily get beat by any team on the schedule...This isn't the 90's and the reality of it is that we are not a very good football team YET...Don't get cocky or you will get disappointed.

I'm never cocky and I still get disappointed.

BYU fan here, just wondering what we can expect in our matchup against you guys.

In recent years we have played a bunch of teams with similar size and athleticism to Tennessee and each game has given us very different results. In 2015 we played a talented Michigan team who blew us out 31-0, we looked like an FCS team. We also played Missouri later that year and we lost 20-16 in a game we definitely should have won, but just couldn’t sustain drives. 2016 we played a slew of good teams… Utah and WV were maybe the best, and lost to both of them in nail biters. We also played a middling Mississippi State team and beat them in overtime 28-21. 2017 had LSU murder us, 27-0, and once again our offense looked like an FCS team, but our defense held its own. Later we played Wisconsin and they murdered us 47-6 at home. Mississippi St also beat us 35-10.

Finally in 2018 we showed well and beat a top 10 Wisconsin team on the road and matched up with them physically. We also had a giant lead against Utah before squandering it away in depressing fashion, but that Utah team Is probably similar in talent to you guys this year. However, Washington almost shut us out in a 35-7 win. Overall, I have no idea what to expect. Utah is a great team, and we play them close every year, but they are our rival. Wisconsin showed two different sides of BYU football. So did Mississippi State. I am not sure the quality of Tennessee and would love to hear from you guys. I could see this game anywhere from a close win or loss for us to a game like the LSU game where we lose by 3+ possessions.

Our team has been trying to build depth ever since Kalani got here in 2016. We have been overall pretty successful with this. We have a great RB stable thanks to 2 grad transfers, one from South Carolina (Ty’son Williams) and one from Rice. We have probably a top 5 TE crew in the country, featuring Matt Bushman. Our offensive line is the best it’s been in a decade. We love our young QB Zach Wilson, and expect great things from him. He has been good in most of his outings and should have a breakout year. Our WR crew is thin and honestly not great. We have 2 WRs worth noting, Hifo and Romney. Our TEs will be a big part of our passing game. Grimes is also in his second season as OC, and he has a lot of coaching experience in the SEC, most recently with LSU. This could be the factor that changes the game, he knows SEC football and should have us ready.

Our defense has been the strongest part of our team since 2015. We have a deep D-Line that have been better at stuffing the run than pass rushing, but still can be threats to your QB. Watch out for Khyris Tonga, he is a monster. Our LBs are thin, but have experience. Zayne Anderson missed a lot of the season last year, but will be a senior this year and will be the leader of the defense. This is also our best DB crew we have had in a long time, probably since 2009. That is not saying much though, we are usually very weak in the secondary, but this year is not the case. Our defense last year was very effective in most every game. We held every opponent we played to a modest score – except our rivals Utah and Utah St who scored 35 and 45. Granted, USU had a top offense in the country last year.

This game is going to come down mainly to our offense’s ability to keep us in the game. Our defense will likely hold you to 17-31 points, I’d be shocked if you scored anywhere outside of that range, be it more or less. Our Offense’s range however is probably going to be anywhere from 3-31 points. I think Tennessee should be about a 7 point favorite, and that’s about what I expect to see come to fruition. Maybe a 24-17 type win for the Vols. I am interested to hear from you guys about this matchup though. I don’t know a lot about your team other than your QB.

Thank you for the breakdown. Please ignore our lack of manners. Some of us forget we live in the south where southern hospitality is expected. As others have said, we really don’t know what we have. Our game with BYU is going to be telling on many fronts. Pun intended. Our DL and OL is loaded with guys, but we have no idea as to their talent level.

On offense we have a ton of experience returning including the OL I mentioned. This is the first year where they could be a potential threat. If Banks can hold onto the football, you will have three studs running the football beginning with Chandler backed by Jordan and then Banks. Three stud WRs (Palmer, Callaway, Jennings) a stud senior TE (DWA) and of course JG who is one of the most efficient passers in CFB. His production has been lacking, however. So, this year is another ? For him.

We have a new coordinator who I think will probably try to expose your LBs with methodical mid range passing which will cause your secondary to bite and allow us to play over your Dline, side to side running and passing to wear down your Dline and and then some surprising deep balls when your corners and safeties start biting. We have really big receivers. If your DBs are small that could be a serious disadvantage. That said our starting WRs are mostly not super fast. Depending on the efficacy of our line, it may keep your D honest and allow us to have a run game. If Solomon & Jones are cleared to play, I think our OL May win that contest.

On D, we have no idea what to expect with our DL. We lost three starters in the middle and they were part of the worst Dline in the country last year..., I think. That said, we are now two years under SC Fitz and apparently our guys don’t look like the same guys. We got some new help as well with a transfer.

I have heard many say we are good at LB, but I will wait and see. Reid, Ignont, Bituli and Taylor as well as some others should me monsters by now, but jury remains. We got some new studs in Tototoo and Crouch but they shouldn’t see much playing time if our coaches have made the most of the guys I mentioned.

Our DBs are young. But the starters are supposed to be really, really good—especially Taylor. Not super deep though. We are solid at safety apparently. Warrior will step up this year and take some people’s heads off. I don’t know enough about that group, but again we apparently are fairly strong there.

Not sure this helps, but...

You have noticed the same thing I have. Over the years BYU seem to be a very "mature" team. Guess it has to do with "taking off a year for religious things.
It’s an interesting situation. Missions go for 2 years, so theoretically the players would be a 20 year old freshman. This does create a more mature team, but at what cost?

Having served a mission, I forfeited volleyball scholarship opportunities at a few schools. When you serve a mission you don’t have access to the sport, you go 2 years without it. Sure you can work out, and sure you can throw the ball around or whatever, but overall missions are a net negative for 99% of college athletes. Too many times we’ve seen players go on missions after their freshman year and become a shell of what they once were.

A majority of our best players in our history didn’t serve missions, and when we have highly touted recruits we all hope secretly they don’t serve.

Thanks for the quality response.

This is our best secondary in probably a decade. They have some size, and have overall been successful in preventing big plays.

Our DC plays defense similar to the patriots, bend but don’t break. You will be very familiar with the 50-30 yard lines on our side of the field, but that’s where we buckle down. Most teams have had success with short to intermediate passing, and I assume that will be the same with you guys.

My pleasure. This game should be very telling for both programs. Sounds like you have more to go on than we do and we will have our hands full. Would you say your team is as good as KY or Auburn was last year? We are all hoping for games like that to be a consistency this year, albeit Auburn played terribly against us last year.

I caught that BYU won on the road, but do you think Wisconsin was overlooking your program? I think our guys will be very ready to play. Also, we do have Neyland Stadium in our favor. Just some things to consider. I know some out there think we go 6-6 and that includes a loss to BYU along with losses to Florida, Bama, Georgia, Missouri and Mississsippi St., Kentucky. and or SC. I know that is 8 losses, but I think we take SC, KY this year. I have us beating you all, but you have made me extra nervous lol.

Our team was hard to dissect last year. We beat Wisconsin, Arizona. Should have beaten Boise, Utah. Laid absolute eggs against USU and NIU. The QB switch mid season helped us a lot as well, but our team was destroyed by injuries by the end of the season. Since we play you guys early you’ll get the best version of us. Still, I wouldn’t count on us winning. I suspect we have trouble moving the ball for most of the game. We haven’t ever had success scoring against SEC teams. Our last few had scores of:
2017 Miss St 10-35 L
2017 LSU 0-27 L
2016 Miss St W 28-21 (OT) W (14-14 in regulation)
2015 Missouri 16-20 L
2011 Ole Miss 14-13 W

We have not scored more than 16 in regulation in our last 5 sec games. I suspect that trend holds. Our defense has also matched up well against everyone except for the 2017 matchups (our worst team in 50 years). This game will be physical and tough, but I suspect we come up short.

I don’t care what anyone posts about this game! The truth is Vol fans have NO idea what to expect. Until we have an offensive and defensive line we will struggle to beat anyone. Sure we have play makers on offense and defense. Probably one of the best WR group you will face this year. We have a solid secondary. We have a QB who has ran for his life for two years and still made plays without too many INT. Other than the solid players we know we have we don’t know if what to expect! Our OL the last two years has been two of the worst in the nation. Our DL hasn’t been able get any pressure for since Barnett. Until that changes we can’t be anything more than mediocre.

I know what I expect.

A well prepared team that will thrash the opposition.

I don’t know what I will get.

There are plenty of X factors to consider.

I’m looking forward to this season and I like our chances.

Question for the OP.
Do you think BYU would be better off in the Mountain West, WAC, or PAC12?

Big12.

PAC12 already has a Utah team with Utah broadcasting coverage. WAC is too junior league for BYU and Mountain West is fine (they used to dominate the MW).

But the Big12 could vastly expand their reach and by perhaps adding ColoSt they would get a much larger revenue footprint.

Agreed. JW knew my Pop's bc of UT Law tie, as so many who attended there do/did. He doesn't get enough credit for having been an intellectual. Was always prepared.

Ward knew all the opposing players' home towns. Some famous Football announcers had a distinct voice and delivery; John Ward had that; but also increased Vol Fans' Vocabularies. Ebullient. Heard it from JW First. I loved John Ward.

Expect this on pretty much every play. They are known as the dirtiest team in football for a reason.
