I think the staff should move him now with the emergence of Latrell Williams coming in the slot now .

This question only becomes pertinent if we see the emergence of potential becoming actual threats. Calloway, Johnson, Williams, George etc. As electric as Dobbs was, I believe the next starting QB will be more WR friendly.

I think if he was going to move we would have already seen a sign by now such as him doing some drills with the db's this spring. There's been no indication of that so I'm thinking he sticks with the receivers. I'm going with Jennings, Byrd, and Calloway as the starters.

I agree with the starters you named, but Jones will start Josh Smith no matter what

Unfortunately you're probably right. Nothing against Josh Smith, he's made some great catches in the past, but anytime he's put in a position where he has to make a guy miss it doesn't end so well.

Or, play them where they're most needed to help their team, a la Carl Pickens back in the day. What you call "coaching scared", I call coaching pragmatically.

Also, I saw tremendous burst, talent and potential from Byrd last year at wideout, we've not seen him at all play DB at the collegiate level....perhaps Butch and Shoop think he's a better WR now than he might be as a corner down the road?

Qualified everything I posted with acknowledgement I didn't KNOW which position was best for him. Not sure how you compare it to Pickens. He played BOTH his freshman season (along with returns) and far as I know WR was his preferred position and one in which he enjoyed professional success. If Majors had kept him at DB (at the expense of WR snaps) because "they were thin and couldn't spare him" would that have qualified as "pragmatic" ? Not pretending to know what the coaches have seen and evaluated but if the reasoning is "we have no choice", instead of talent THAT is coaching scared. Hope that's not the case. :hi:

We need playmakers on offense too OP.

But...

1. Depth. Our corners suck! Moseley is trash. Martin is unreliable until he proves otherwise. Osborne shows promise. Buchanan is ok but not great.

2. Byrd needs to be on the field. If Latrell starts in the slot, Byrd is wasted. Smith can be the #2.

3. This is what he played in high school. He's a beast as a CB. The rust will wear off quickly, but he will have to learn the defense. Worth it.

Jmo, tifwiw, etc...

I say do it. Jennings is good enough to be a #1 WR, Josh Smith is a perfectly serviceable #2, and somebody else from the group of Brandon Johnson, Marquez Callaway, Latrell Williams, and/or one of the incoming freshmen can step up to fill Byrd's void on offense. We should be running more anyway, with a new QB and a better offensive line.

Byrd has a much higher ceiling at CB in both the short- and long-term, and if last year was any indication our defense needs much more help than our offense.

Dude you may never see Josh smith play any quality minutes again ... too fragile

That's easy. Carl as a freshman was stuck behind TD Woods, wasn't playing much, had 5 catches through 7 games. After getting torched by LSU's Tommy Hodson for 400+ yds passing, DC Doug Mathews begged for Carl to come over and play safety the last 5 games because they badly needed him to play there, needed his help.

According to Doug, they "promised" him he'd play both ways, but pretty much reneged, and he almost exclusively played safety the last 5 games....had 4 interceptions vs only 2 more catches at WR (had only 7 total catches as a freshman) the rest of the way. They also needed him to return kicks, which, as you pointed out, he also did.... like Byrd did a few times last year as well when Berry went down.

As far as the question you asked about Majors, the answer is yes. You got a talented guy that can play either position....where is he needed most for the good of the team? Majors and Mathews badly needed help at safety, so they moved Pickens over, the definition of pragmatic imo, that simple. I'm saying that equates to keeping Byrd at WR because WR is where he's most needed to help the team.

Fwiw....Coach Doug Mathews has been lobbying on his radio show for Byrd's move to defense.
Otoh.....VFL radio talker Eric Ainge wants Byrd in the slot.

What's the problem with playing both ways? Vintage all around playmaker. Jabril Peppers did it last year. He doesn't have to play every snap.

Too rare, systems too complicated. Add in that most coaches want their best players on special teams as well. That's a lot, too much to ask. Peppers did it, but really who else? And, after a pretty strong start, he fell off considerably the rest of the year.

Why not just recruit and develop your players, let em focus on one position/"specialize" and have em be great at that one position? Makes more sense to me. Jmo.
