Got me. I defend the coaches to a fault, but some players ( like Devrin Young and Mack Crowder) get way too big a leash when there are better options behind them. More surprised with Shoop on this one...I figured he had carte blanche on these decisions. Plug in McDowell and/or Sapp and this is a strength.

Mainly Sapp is not the size of a Sam LB. To play the Sam, you have to shed the blockers and stuff the run on the strong side of the line. The Will is more of a space player and backside pursuit guy. Against traditional 12 man personnel like what Georgia or Alabama run, an undersized backer gets killed. Va Tech runs a lot of 12 man personnel. Bynum did well against Georgia, Alabama and Vanderbilt last year.

Have some of you guys that like to question players ability ever consider using generic positions labels such as Linebackers or safeties? What if Bynum in this case or any of his close relatives decide to visit and have to see their name and read your comments?
I know about the 1st amendment but a little consideration couldn't hurt. Same post could have entered in the RF talk thread, everything from recruits to recipes get talked about daily.

These guys that some like to blast are VFL's too...

I'm always amazed at internet posters questioning coaches decisions as to playing time. The coaches see them every day and know their strengths and weakness. We don't. Do you really think the coaches are going to play the "worse" players-- particularly since their job is dependent on winning?

I never called him garbage or a scummy human being. I think his backups are more talented...just in case Grampy Bynum figured out his internet machine. :hi:

Talent wise...#51 isn't fast enough or appear to be a headhunter. I would force #20 into the Sam position.

Coaches play the wrong player alot all over the country. Lewis should have started first game his freshman yr for example.

Yeah I hated the reason that Levine knew the protections so much better than Lewis.

That was on Cut. One of his former drawbacks along with the disregard for TEs in the passing game...since corrected.

So you are saying leave it to highly paid and experienced professionals rather than Bob the insurance agent in Tullahoma who played in high school and watches a lot of Finebaum?

I'm not questioning the coaches decision because sometimes players perform at a much higher level in practice. Now that we have played a game, I would say moving forward the 4-2-5 with Gaulden at nickel looked much more effective than the 4-3 with Bynum. JRM being ejected had to make a huge difference, but I would agree that I would have to look at McDowell at Sam in the 4-3.

This. If ever a team needed more nickle then ASU would seem to be it. I don't know, but they sure seemed to get in a lot of space with their option plays.
