Buying out of the Oklahoma game

Should TN buyout of the OU game?

I see it's impossible to pose a question or debate on VN without having your manhood or dedication to the University that you graduated from questioned.

I hope we win the game and claim 6-7 or more wins next season. Maybe some of the SEC teams that snuck up on us as top-10s won't be so strong next year.

The meathead responses are predictable.

you act as if everyone against your idea has done that. Quit trying to play the victim

A struggling Tennessee program with one of the richest traditions in college football vs a strong Oklahoma program, likewise, with one of the richest traditions in college football. This will be a match-up to watch, regardless of the rankings. Storied SEC opponent vs storied Big 12. If Tennessee heats up in 2015, it could be a good one.

To be the man you've got to beat the man....you can't get better by playing cupcakes. Fight the best and you will know your strengths and weaknesses.

Who are old enough to remember the 1968 Orange Bowl? That is the first game I remember as a VOL. I heard names like Dewey Warren and Jack Reynolds. Oklahoma got a big lead mainly due to the play of their quarterback. He was great at faking the ball and our defense would always get fooled by his fakes. We finally figured it out and fought back. We owned the second half. Lost the game on a last second field goal that barely missed. We've fallen a long way.

Not sure we figured out any strengths getting drummed by Oregon. Weaknesses, yeah we saw plenty of those. Problem is I havent seen any progress in correcting them. Same ones showing up week after week after week.

At this point losing to Oklahoma isn't that big of a deal, but the reward (the odds slight though they may be) of beating Oklahoma is so huge that its not a bad bet.

Is it time for us to start thinking about letting this series go? Utah State and Ark State are no cupcakes, so we need all the for sure Ws we can get.

I remember being upset when we backed out of the UNC series, but we can't keep putting ourselves in these gauntlet games. These kinds of games against top-tier programs are only beneficial for boosting our strength of schedule if we were worth a damn and making a run at a title or BCS game. We can't keep lining up against superior talent and expecting to come away with a .500 or better season.

By the way, I know that I'm not the first person to propose this idea. A few people were talking about buying out of Oregon before 2013, and I've seen people talk about buying out of OU too. I just figured it was time for us to explore some options.

I say we play them. Our record next season will either be 5 - 7 or 6 - 6, so it doesn't matter.

We will be playing ALOT of true freshmen and red shirt freshmen.....

It's not so much a "VAWLS DON'T BACK DOWN" thing, as it is a "we made a commitment and we should stick to it" thing.

We never got out of the UNC game. Instead, we paid close to $1mil only to play the game later on in the year at a neutral site in a close loss which resulted in a change of rules the following off-season. Sure, let's cancel OK, cross our fingers and hope something good comes of it.

When the SEC moves to a 9 game slate, we are likely to cancel the all the rest of the dumb OOC games we can. If we don't, then we are hurting our own cause.

I get that, but we stand to lose more money in the long run by finishing with another 5 win season and missing another bowl, or getting Butch fired again.

In my mind, buying out of the OU series is an investment that will end up working out for us.

i dont feel like Oklahoma is really that much better than tennessee.
