Buying out of the Oklahoma game

Should TN buyout of the OU game?

I get that, but we stand to lose more money in the long run by finishing with another 5 win season and missing another bowl, or getting Butch fired again.

In my mind, buying out of the OU series is an investment that will end up working out for us.

Big 12 is better than SEC!

In CBJs first year at Cincy, he took the team that would eventually finish 4-8 up against OU and lost 31-29 on the final drive. I was there. The next year the Bearcats won 10 games and went to a BCS bowl. I assure you CBJ is not scared of OU.

And - if you're ever going to beat a stoops coached team, it's in September of a year after both starting offensive tackles graduate.

i love tennessee football, and will watch either way. but my family has 0 interest in watching tennessee play oklahoma over ark state.

its a game that means ****! whats the point? SOS isnt a factor when ur 5-7

Sadly, we wouldn't even be having this conversation if we'd beaten Vandy - let that one sink in.

We have no business playing these OOC games right now. Same ppl saying bring em on are the ones who will be melting down when they hammer us.

If you have to buy out of a game to have hopes on going to a crap bowl, I would rather play a real game and leave the crap bowl for someone else. IMO you get more respect loosing to a better team than dodging the good team to play a weak team. The only way you get better is to play better teams. The good teams are not ducking these games but winning them plus a tough SEC schedule. True the other SEC teams are ahead of TN right now but you may as well learn to play a tough out of conference game and a tough SEC schedule like the big boys are doing now.

As of right now, 2014 is looking like more of the same, with us fighting for a 6th win in late November. If we replace OU with a cupcake, we're likely looking at some positive momentum going into conference play, and 4 or 5 winnable games, with us just having to win one big game to get into a bowl. If we finish with 7 or 8 wins, all the more better.

Nobody would hold it against any other program if they bought out of this series in this position. ESPN and OU might give us crap about it for a season or two, but we'll eventually earn our respect when we're back in the spotlight again. And we could get back there quicker with an improved season next year.

Late to the conversation but win or lose this game is good for UT, OU, and college football.

You don't back out of this.

I'm willing to put up with a probable loss in Norman next year in order to get their return visit in 2015. Beating Oklahoma on national TV to open Jones's third year will be a good way to announce loudly to the country that we're back.

NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! That is the cause of this problem now! Too much taking the easy way out and not enough learning how to fight and overcome. You're teaching the kids that when the going gets tough we'll get bail out. That's not the right message especially going into life after CFB. This will teach those freshman what it is like to play big boy football in a major conference against men. They will probably lose but each learn what they have to do to be better...

Try again

I like these games but not right now. Were a garbage team already playing in the toughest league. Why play Oregon and OU now? Maybe in a few yrs. While Vandy schedules cupcakes TN schedules OU. What's the perception of those two right now? We don't prove anything playing them. Were already in the SEC

Tennessee will not buy out OU. They need the exposure to prove they are not walking away from anyone. Though we may lose, you cant say we wont be there or at least watching with a positive frame of mind. Whos to say we dont sneak up on them and surprise alot of folks.

After the way this season's going to end, I think it's reasonable to want to buy out of OU (but of course it won't happen). Vandy's slid by on a Charmin soft schedule. You don't get medals for participation in the SEC. No one really cares that we played the most difficult schedule in the country. I'll just say we're bringing in a lot of new blood in 2014--I'm expecting better results next year--again I'll just keep it reasonable and say that CBJ needs to get us into a bowl.

:idea::pinch:
Is it time for us to start thinking about letting this series go? Utah State and Ark State are no cupcakes, so we need all the for sure Ws we can get.

I remember being upset when we backed out of the UNC series, but we can't keep putting ourselves in these gauntlet games. These kinds of games against top-tier programs are only beneficial for boosting our strength of schedule if we were worth a damn and making a run at a title or BCS game. We can't keep lining up against superior talent and expecting to come away with a .500 or better season.

By the way, I know that I'm not the first person to propose this idea. A few people were talking about buying out of Oregon before 2013, and I've seen people talk about buying out of OU too. I just figured it was time for us to explore some options.

No! :stop:
