Greetings, Vol Nation. I come in peace. I'm a Butler grad, but my old man is a UT grad, so there's always a soft spot in my heart for the Vols.
I'm surprised at a few of the comments on this thread inferring that Butler is somehow not as good a team this year. Here are some facts:
Last year, Butler got an At-Large 5 seed, and this was our resume: 25-6, 6-4 last 10, 2nd in conference regular season & conference tourney, 4-1 vs RPI top 50, 7-3 vs RPI top 100, 3 "bad" losses to 100+ RPI teams.
This year, we received a 7 seed, and here's our resume: 28-3, 9-1 last 10, 1st in conference regular season, won conference tourney, 1-1 vs RPI top 50, 8-3 vs RPI top 100, no "bad" losses. We can't really help it that Ohio State, Texas Tech, Va Tech, Florida State, and Southern Illinois had down years at the same time.
We lost our head coach (3rd coach to leave for a major program in the past 10 years, so we're used to it), and two starters, Brandon Crone and Brian Ligon. Ligon was mainly a defensive post presence, and Crone was a versatile power forward, all 6'6" of him.
However, the new coach is from within the system, our backcourt has one more year of experience, and we have an inside scoring threat for the first time since I can remember (Matt Howard, FR). Howard turned down offers from X, Purdue, and IU to come to Butler, and he's been as good as advertised. We have one of the best recruiting classes in Butler history as freshmen, plus we added Avery Jukes, a forward who transferred from 'Bama who has done a nice job in limited minutes off the bench.
Most Butler fans will agree that this team is better than last year's, on paper, and on the court.
