I see a lot of posters who say that Butch is a bit of a control freak who will only run his system. My question is whether or not that is actually a problem. We've seen games where this offense is successful. I think with proper coaching, this right personnel, and more aggressive play calling, this offense could do what we need it to. Debord has seemed too conservative at times, and the offense has thrived when he opens the playbook. Thoughts?

Yah, I think the system is fine. It's the play calling and player development that seems suspect.

Some games the offense seems great. I believe we outscored the entire conference save for bama. Other games every possession is run up the middle, run up the middle, wide receiver screen, punt, repeat.

His system is built around having to out athlete people right now. That's about to stop.

He runs a really basic 2x2 and 3x1 set, and has some dumbass bastard for going no huddle fast pace. The really interesting part is that he kills that by subbing so much on offense giving the defense a chance to rotate guys in too.

We have NFL talent all over the field and still struggle with efficiency and execution

The delay hand off up the middle really fools a lot of teams

Without a QB like Dobbs, who has the ability to use his feet to make first downs and keep the chains moving, I fear for the ole chuck-and-duck O next year.

Only problem I ever have had with the system is the stubborn use of hurry up. There are times when it's really effective and I fully understand using it after a first down, but sometimes it's ok to slow down a little and protect the defense.

I'm really not that worried about that. We get so hung up on what the offense is"supposed" to look like, when in reality the sets look like what you see in pro style offenses all the time. I just don't think it's that big a stretch for the base running play to go from being zone read to zone run. Just have to throw it enough to keep everybody honest.

It was pretty obvious that was going to be a problem watching the Oregon game his first season. It was like we were trying to get the ball back to Oregon as fast as possible.

His system is designed to put athletes in space and have them beat their one on one. This works when you have better athletes then the competition, which is why are stats look so good against weak teams, but this type of offense doesn't work against top defenses with talent the same as yours. Also, doesn't help with the lack of creativity to get the athletes in space which is why Debord had trouble.

Me too

If I'm on the D I'm asking for them to slow it down by the 3rd quarter

Our D is on the field way too much
