Butch's Presser Comments

Unless he pulls a rabbit out of his hat, I doubt it lands in the top 15

Right now at #11, we are still only 5th in the SEC in recruiting

Thats with 26 commits

Florida is 8th in the SEC with only 15 commits and will likely pass us by signing day

That means our top 2 rivals in the East and 1 in the West will have more talent than us on the roster

Its already proven Butch has to have max talent to win 5 games in the SEC

Its not looking good for the future
if not for the Legacy guys, we would be in bad shape ! I'm not impressed with his recruiting this season at all.

most programs lose games that they are not suppose to lose all the time. Ole Miss should not have lost to Vandy. Bama should not have lost to Ole Miss last year. Arkansas should not have lost to Toledo. It is what it is. Any given Saturday a team can be beat.

Sure, it happens. Most coaches admit that it is a failure though. Hell, I'd take a 'work like heck' right about now.

I don't think we will even be close to the same or Better record.

The schedule is a nightmare

Alabama
LSU
Florida
Georgia
Kentucky
Missouri
Vandy
GT

I know I'm forgetting some...

Call me crazy but I'd be scared to death to play GT right now.

7-5 with a shot at 8-4 seems likely

it will not only be about the money - it will also be a guarantee of x number years regardless of the record.

The expectation will be ... The talent is here win 15 games and if said coach doesn't you all will be saying the same things about that coach. And any coach who is paying attention knows that.

At some point the amount of money doesn't matter and the amount of money is not worth the stress on a person or their family.

bingo!

Wow. Is this the way its going to be from now on? Basically everything Butch says has to be spun negatively? Looks like Butch is frustrated that what he has accomplished here with Tennessee is being under appreciated. And he is correct in being frustrated.

For everyone on here thats on the anti-Butch train answer me a few things.

1. After Fulmer, how many of you really expected Tennessee to be relevant again in CF? Especially after hiring a proven loser with no collegiate HC experience?

2. So after that loser left, yet an even bigger monumental loser was hired. A guy who had a 17-20 record at Louisiana Tech. Did any of you really expect to ever win a bowl game under Dooley? To beat Florida or Georgia under Dooley? Hiw about beat a ranked team under Dooley?

I know some of you will lie and say oh I expected us to be fine after firing one of the best coaches in the SEC. Oh I expected this and that blah, blah, blah. Its all lies. You are just fooling yourselves. Tennessee was THE doormat of the SEC for awhile. What Butch has been able to accomplish in his short time here is nothing short of amazing. He didnt walk into a team loaded with talent on either side of the ball. He didnt inherit a team that had speed, intestinal fortitude, a never quit attitude or confidence. What did he walk into? A football program that was devastated. Players who were slow and had gotten used to losing as the norm. A fanbase that had grown used to losing and losing badly. Not to mention an almost destroyed relationship with many high schools within the state that affected recruiting big time.

Where is Tennessee now? We are bowl eligible for the third straight year. First time thats happened since 2004. First time since 2004 we beat UF and Georgia in the same year. Ranked in the top 10 for awhile. Will likely finish the season ranked in the AP top 25 for second straight year, first time thats happened since 2006-2007. Butch's team could be the first since 1994-1996 to win 3 straight bowl games.

Yes the loss to USc was horrible. No argument there. The simple fact is almost every team loses a game they shouldnt. Thats not an excuse. And those who really think injuries should not have played such a major issue in this years results, then I suggest you do some research. People talk about UF beating LSU while having injuires, yet fail to mention that LSU's best player, perhaps the best RB in the country, was injured. So did LF's injury have anything to do with their loss? Some of you will say no and you are just wrong.

I am unhappy this season turned out the way it did. I really thought we would go 11-1, with the only loss coming to Bama. I prefaced that by saying if no catastrophic injuries happened. What happened? Catastrophic injuries is putting it lightly with team 120. Yet here we are with a chance to go the Sugar Bowl for the firs time in 20 or so years. Then we have the media taking every word Butch says and spinning it they way they want. Thats what media does. Then I am sure he hears peoples frsutrations about this season. At this point it is what it is. Is there really any point in complaining about something thats out of our control? No there isnt. Florida is playing in the SECCG and Tennessee isnt. The 2016 Tennessee Vols failed to beat South Carolina and UF beat LSU. Yes it sucks, but so what? We can still play in a very good bowl game against a quality opponent. And if anyone ever thought we we would be here in this position say 7-8 years ago, then keep lying to yourself.

Butch Jones deserves criticism. He is not a perfect coach. He has made dumb calls and has done his part to cost us games. He has also done a lot of great things at Tennessee. Like pulled us from the gutter into being nationally relevant again. Thats a big deal IMO.

Are you simple? This fanbase never expected to not be nationally relevant again. We fired Fulmer with full expectations of regaining the 90s swagger.

And, yes, Fulmer, was a Hall of Fame coach with a National Title, but 10-4 and the Citrus Bowl was his ceiling. Before that we fired Tennessee's favorite son, Johnny Majors, a Hall of Fame coach with a National Title because he couldn't beat Alabama and also had a ceiling we weren't comfortable with. You know why? Because we're Tennessee. And there was a time when Tennessee relentlessly pursued championships. Now maybe in retrospect, it would have been better not to get rid of those all time greats, but we did it out of desire to win. The problem has been a string of of hires that are unbecoming of the University of Tennessee, a (formerly) Top 10 program.

Hopefully, most aren't content with the scraps that seem to fill your appetite for Tennessee football.

This whole "ceiling" talk is really fascinating. I have heard people say 9 win is CBJ ceiling, even though he say had a 10 win season. You just said a CPF had a ceiling of 10 wins even though he won more than 10 games multiple times.

I dont get it.

I'm not really sure I should even reply to your post, but I'm pretty sure I have been watching Tennessee football longer than you have. Butch Jones has done what no coach has in a long time at Tennessee, made us relevant again.

Fulmer started a long down hill slide that led to a decade of crappy football. His time was over and the powers that be left him in charge too long.

I've been part of the yo-yo of Bill Battle, Johnny Majors, Phil Fulmer, F-stick, Derrick Dooley and now Butch Jones. I've seen the highs and lows of Tennessee football.

I'm good with what Butch has done and although I hate the losses, especially the South Carolina one, I think he has us headed in the right direction. Yeah, he needs to lose his coach speak, but in the next few years I think we'll be okay.

Fans are pissed because Tennessee didn't win the east and rightfully so. Tennessee didn't lose the east because they lost to Bama or A&M. Tennessee didn't lose the east because LSU lost to Florida. Tennessee lost the east because they got beat by South Carolina when they were a 14 point favorite COMING OFF A BYE WEEK! This is a trend for Butch, the table is set every year and he manages to sh!t the bed every time. The SEC east was at a all time low this year and Tennessee had more talent than anyone in the east and blew it. I'm so sick of, well Florida doesn't have to play Bama thats not fair blah blah blah. Florida was down 7 key starters and went into LSU and took care of business. Their coach doesn't make excuses and hang banners for "bowl championships" he mans up and gets sh!t done while butch hides behind his mountain of excuses.

Its a trend for every team in the country except Alabama. Name a team that has not lost a game it was favored to win ? Basically , you are saying that your expect them to be like Alabama. They are not there yet. Especially from a depth perspective as you saw this year. It will take several recruiting cycles. In the past 2 recruiting cycles , Alabama has recruited 10 players in state that are 4 and 5 star. We dont have that and have to recruit in other teams backyard. You have to give it time

So the wins we have against UF and UGA...thats due to coaching too, right?

Well...how 'bout the "squeaker" with Appy State? And the whopping 9 point win over Ohio? You wanna keep going?

Come on, Man! THIS was THE year. And in MANY ways...Butch BLEW IT!

"Something" happened with the Strength & Conditioning Coach before the Season...Team/Athletic Nutricianist left...and we've got players dropping like flies with injuries...

The "Buck" has to stop somewhere...

You people can be plain stupid. YOU are not ENTITLED to anything this football team does. I hope Butch throws the finger to all of you crybabies and UT has to hire someone else to take UT another 3-4 years through .500 ball. No matter what you say, the team has progressed since he's been here. Yeah, the SC loss stunk, but so did the AL and TA@M losses. Someone said these things didn't happen under Fulmer! Ummmm.......Wyoming several years back ring a bell? Point is, it's football. It's a game. The results of this football team don't have any bearing on your life. If it does, GET OUT OF YOUR MOM'S BASEMENT! The fact that YOU'RE embarrassed of what people think because of what the football team does is just plain sad. If you don't like what you see, don't go, don't watch, stop buying merch.

Butch needs to get some thicker skin. The fans rewarded this team with amazing attendance & support, & he gets bent out of shape when we are disappointed that the team didn't meet expectations? You can't demand only the positive be recognized. You must also understand & acknowledged the failure. If he doesn't start to get this, he's in for a long offseason & hot seat year.

Before CBJ for a few years, recall almost more crimson in Neyland than orange when the Tide came to town? Let CBJ play this thing out before getting stupid again. I have yet to hear or read of anyone closely better available and in our budget that would deliver. Back to the every 3 or 4 year crap shoot coach is the answer?? I think not. CBJ may not be the guy long term but he deserves this to play out at least through 2017 without question.

Butch has built a program.

Wins up every year
Talent up
Graduation up
GPA up
Expectations up

We are trending towards championship. Had to do a lot of reteaching due to injury this year. Reps matter. This ain't Madden.

Media plays to the nega Vols to sale clicks.
I applaud you. Great quote

Johnny Majors won a friggin national championship before he came to UT. So there's that.

You are correct and it took Saban years to build...even with his in state advantages. I think the key for CBJ is to keep recruiting at a high level and to continue to improve his process . Folks have to remember ( or research if too young ) the years and years of pretty good and 'almost there' teams led by Majors before Fulmer took the helm and had some solid years , and then great years after a kid named Peyton joined the team . With our instate lack of quality recruiting , it is not going to be an instant fix.

We were ranked in the Top 10 for 2 weeks during the season. That's not "awhile." That's 2 of 12 weeks (3 of 13 if you include the preseason rankings).
