Wow. Is this the way its going to be from now on? Basically everything Butch says has to be spun negatively? Looks like Butch is frustrated that what he has accomplished here with Tennessee is being under appreciated. And he is correct in being frustrated.
For everyone on here thats on the anti-Butch train answer me a few things.
1. After Fulmer, how many of you really expected Tennessee to be relevant again in CF? Especially after hiring a proven loser with no collegiate HC experience?
2. So after that loser left, yet an even bigger monumental loser was hired. A guy who had a 17-20 record at Louisiana Tech. Did any of you really expect to ever win a bowl game under Dooley? To beat Florida or Georgia under Dooley? Hiw about beat a ranked team under Dooley?
I know some of you will lie and say oh I expected us to be fine after firing one of the best coaches in the SEC. Oh I expected this and that blah, blah, blah. Its all lies. You are just fooling yourselves. Tennessee was THE doormat of the SEC for awhile. What Butch has been able to accomplish in his short time here is nothing short of amazing. He didnt walk into a team loaded with talent on either side of the ball. He didnt inherit a team that had speed, intestinal fortitude, a never quit attitude or confidence. What did he walk into? A football program that was devastated. Players who were slow and had gotten used to losing as the norm. A fanbase that had grown used to losing and losing badly. Not to mention an almost destroyed relationship with many high schools within the state that affected recruiting big time.
Where is Tennessee now? We are bowl eligible for the third straight year. First time thats happened since 2004. First time since 2004 we beat UF and Georgia in the same year. Ranked in the top 10 for awhile. Will likely finish the season ranked in the AP top 25 for second straight year, first time thats happened since 2006-2007. Butch's team could be the first since 1994-1996 to win 3 straight bowl games.
Yes the loss to USc was horrible. No argument there. The simple fact is almost every team loses a game they shouldnt. Thats not an excuse. And those who really think injuries should not have played such a major issue in this years results, then I suggest you do some research. People talk about UF beating LSU while having injuires, yet fail to mention that LSU's best player, perhaps the best RB in the country, was injured. So did LF's injury have anything to do with their loss? Some of you will say no and you are just wrong.
I am unhappy this season turned out the way it did. I really thought we would go 11-1, with the only loss coming to Bama. I prefaced that by saying if no catastrophic injuries happened. What happened? Catastrophic injuries is putting it lightly with team 120. Yet here we are with a chance to go the Sugar Bowl for the firs time in 20 or so years. Then we have the media taking every word Butch says and spinning it they way they want. Thats what media does. Then I am sure he hears peoples frsutrations about this season. At this point it is what it is. Is there really any point in complaining about something thats out of our control? No there isnt. Florida is playing in the SECCG and Tennessee isnt. The 2016 Tennessee Vols failed to beat South Carolina and UF beat LSU. Yes it sucks, but so what? We can still play in a very good bowl game against a quality opponent. And if anyone ever thought we we would be here in this position say 7-8 years ago, then keep lying to yourself.
Butch Jones deserves criticism. He is not a perfect coach. He has made dumb calls and has done his part to cost us games. He has also done a lot of great things at Tennessee. Like pulled us from the gutter into being nationally relevant again. Thats a big deal IMO.
