Butch's Presser Comments

I really don't think those thoughts are from our record or our losses this season besides the SC game. I think it's because we played behind almost all season. But I'm happy with the progress but we need some staff changes.

I agree but before the season started he was the ring leader saying we should embrace the expectations, we haven't met them and are disappointed...to an extent the minimization of the great that has been done is a product of his encouragement to embrace and expect us to meet them. Don't act confused about the fallout, coach?

Yeah, he needs a PR guy but in the field we are in pretty good shape. Also, I heard a call yesterday that had a good point. The caller talked about knowing the attitude of the team and if he admits that the season is a failure the team might lay down. We need to beat Vandy and if we won the Sugar bowl, I dont know too many fans that would consider that a failure. Yeah he needs to find a new approach to get his message out to the media, but otherwise, we are just fine.

I recorded the game and watched on Sunday after I got home from the game. They put up a list of starters we've lost this year. It was like 11 or 12. Does that not mean anything to any of you who are crying like a 1 year old who just pissed their diaper?
What other team could lose litterally HALF of their starters and not drop off?

Not when UT is playing a South Carolina team who's QB would be considered a diaper dandy by Dickey V.

Florida didn't have any trouble

Because he's the head coach at the University of Tennessee and I'm a fan of the University of Tennessee

Well, sure, I get that.

But weekly press conferences stopped being useful 10 or so years ago, if not more. Anything after their introductory press conferences are pretty much background noise.

99.9% of coaches say nothing at their press conference, and given the way any misstep/gaffe is blown up, I don't blame them.

Give me some kind of vauge injury report, any news on position changes or things like that, and that's about all I need to hear...and I have more than a dozen sources to choose from for that.

8-9 win seasons are mediocre in the SEC.

If you're happy with that, you get of one of those Champions of life trophies. I'm trying to have a coach who thinks it's unacceptable to win 8-9 games and wants to win real life NCAA Championships WITH life champions trophies included.

8 or 9 win seasons are Not mediocre in the SEC. You may want to look up the definition of mediocre. 8 or 9 win seasons in the toughest football conference is pretty good (with some 10 or 11 win seasons thrown in).

I'm pretty sure Butch wants to win the 'real life' championship. But, given that only one team wins a year and some good programs haven't won it in decades, it's a good goal but not a reason to run a coach off after 4 years. This is still a 'building program'. Most don't have patience for building and want instant gratification.

I figure with a name like ReaderVol, you'd read a little more. I said we've gotten better. But better isn't the goal at TN. SEC East is the first goal, then SEC Champs, then National Champs.

The post I was referring said "he" as in Jones determines "improved". I pointed out a fact.
Facts bother you?

And half our team wasn't hurt for App State. But instead of owning the terrible play against them, he says they were just a super great team.

most programs lose games that they are not suppose to lose all the time. Ole Miss should not have lost to Vandy. Bama should not have lost to Ole Miss last year. Arkansas should not have lost to Toledo. It is what it is. Any given Saturday a team can be beat.

Some UT fans are too simple to see past our Coach. All coaches lost to people they shouldn't. Butch has done that once in the 4 years he has been here.

It's how the team has played. Last year's team was a better team. Basically whole team back.. Lucky to not have 5 losses right now. That's why people are minimizing it. This team isn't as good as last year's even before all the injuries..If Va Tech hadn't fumbled the ball every other play they might have beat us too.. Tennessee has some smart fans that know football. This team wasn't coached well this year and you could see it every week. Wasn't anyone's imagination..

This is true and most of their fans have similar reactions.

Bama fans get pissed when Saban wins by 30 instead of 50.

That is a big difference between Saban and Butch. Saban was furious over beating Chattanooga by only 31-3. Jones barely beat App State in OT and took a victory lap.

I'm not at all for firing the guy as I've stated multiple times, but sometimes it's HOW you win. We beat Mizzou but gave up 700 yards of offense. No OK! I think to get to that premium level, he needs to be more cut throat.

Were you happy with the Shoop hire? I don't remember a single post on this site or a single "expert" who didn't praise the hire. Why did our defense take such a HUGE step back?

No, I was ecstatic when we hired Shoop. Especially when you were able to look at his proven track record of success. I see your point, and I think that is why I continue to say that all the blame cannot be pinned on Butch and Shoop. Most Vol fans recognize what Butch has done for this program, and like I said I support him and want him to do well, I by no means think he should be fired yet. The biggest thing I have about Butch is his lack of accountability. I too wish he would just own it and talk about how we will improve, etc. Even this week Shoop was asked about the defense and did not sugar coat it, he said we were bad and it was unacceptable. The ability for the coach to call it like it is makes you feel more comfortable that the program is in good hands and that they understand. But when all Butch can do is spit cliches and spin our failures it makes you wonder if he is content with our results this season. If 8 wins and a bowl game is acceptable to him.

This season I believe has shown us how weak our positional coordinators are and they need to be replaced (DB, OL, S&C). Shoop not only has to field a defense with a ton of injuries, but how can he call a game when he cannot depend on the secondary for coverage, the LBs for pursuit, or DL for pass rush. It's been rough at times. I think we all agree that Martinez needs to go. Even Tim Priest said the technique we are teaching our DBs simply won't work. They are always out of position, grabbing/pulling WRs, and head not turned around. We all agree that the OL has looked rough throughout the season and the S&C coach needs to go. If we actually had some elite coaches teaching our positional players then I truly believe our talent would be developed more and we would see that success on the field. Again, I do not think Butch should be fired yet, but I am slowly losing hope in him. It would restore a lot of my faith in him if he went out and made some necessary coaching changes again to better this team and program.

Lies and garbage. TN has not won the east since 07. His career record coming off a bye week is 8-3. So it is not a trend. Saban's record with Bama after a bye week is 8-3. Soooooo

These facts you posted, assuming they are since I don't have time to check but I'll just go with it. Butch is in year 4 and IS turning around the program. The perception is better, the wins are better, the recruiting is better; the post season is better, ticket sales are better, etc.

Not a sunshine pumper. I agree the 2013 Vandy loss should not have happened, nor the 2014 FL, nor 2015 OK and FL loss in addition to the 2016 USCe
That's five losses in FOUR seasons most VOL faithful consider to be bad.

Urban has lost 2 the last 2 years he should not have, one cost him a shot at the playoffs last year. Harbaugh lost one this year he should not have. With all of Saban's success he has only had 1 undefeated season.
Folks, look how close we are. We started the game against Texas A&M missing key starters and almost twice that missing against bama. Yes, FL has one more conference win then us but we are not getting blown out by our 3 biggest rivals, 1 as of this year. TN vs A&M could have gone either way and same for LSU vs FL, both very close games.

In my opinion the overall trend of TN football is up and moving in the right direction.

Last, if TN finishes by winning 10 games that is a tremendous season. Sure, we didn’t meet the goal of winning the SEC but should we really complain IF we finish 10-3 ranked in the top 12, possibly 10…not me.

GO VOLS!!!

ATM, toss up game.
Bama, expected loss.
USCe, inexcusable.

It's not just the W/L column though. Making mediocre to horrible teams look world class while we scratch and claw our way to a win doesn't breed confidence.

Care to name a coach besides Nick Saban who has beaten top tier opponents and has not slipped up against a lesser team this year? I don't believe there is one, but assuming you can name one you must then ask yourself, "Would this coach leave to join Tennessee?"

If your answer is no (which it will be) then Butch's loss to USCjr is excusable

Some coaches " don't apologize for wins" and some coaches are constantly looking for ways to make their team better and motivate them.

Like I said earlier, Butch has done a good job with this rebuild, I think most of the backlash comes from his tone deaf remarks, yes we have improved, yes we are in a better position than we were 4 years ago, he has put in a lot of time and heart, and I respect him for all that he has done, but the expectations at UT are not to just be better than Dooley,is to win the games we should, be competitive in the games we are not favored in, and to compete for division and sec titles.

You really should watch ALL of the press conference. To those you have you look like you have a few scews loose.
