Butch will Not Return, even at 9-3. Here is why.

One reason I think people are overlooking is the fact that other coaches have been hired after him and have already become more successful than him at their school.

- Kirby Smart, Hired in 2016 - On track to go 12-0, play in Atlanta and pose a real threat to Alabama in his 2nd year.

- Jim McElwain, Hired in 2015 - Won the East in his first 2 years. Beat Tennessee 2/3 times. Would win the East this year if not for Kirby Smart

Outside the SEC...

- James Franklin, Hired 2014 - Penn State is currently a realistic playoff contender

- Justin Fuente, Hired 2016 - Virginia Tech goes 10-4, plays in the ACC championship, and wins a Bowl game in his first year. Currently 5-1 in 2017 with their only loss being to Clemson.

- Mark Richt, Hired 2016 - Has Miami ranked in the Top 25 and 4-0. Beat Florida State for the first time since 2009 in his 2nd year. Could be seen as the equivalent of TN beating Bama.

All these coached were hired at their respective teams AFTER Butch was hired at Tennessee... And here we are in Year 5 getting blown out 41-0 at home by one of our biggest rivals and wondering if we will even make a bowl game.

I think we may be jumping ahead a bit. The way we have played the last two games and South Carolina next, with a Head Coach Butch hasn't beaten yet. Muschamp has is number so far, and without major improvements it could be a difficult game to win. I hope we do, but I'm not real confident right now that we will.

If he goes 9-3, then his W-L record will have gradually improved year over year. This coupled with a bowl-win and a top-5 recruiting class will guarantee him 2018 and (depending on '18) 2019.

IMHO, if you want CBJ gone now or at season's end, you need to root for whomever the Vols opponent is.

This scenario only applies to a 9-3 season.

Agree totally. IF, hugely tremendously impossible IF, he goes 9-3 then Currie will feel like Butch is the greatest motivator he's ever seen and will choose to postpone the buyout money for another year, just my 2 cents

We won't go 9-3, but if somehow that hypothetical played out there is no way Butch would be fired and no reason he should be fired, despite the illogical rantings of a few as demonstrated in the OP.
There's years of patterns that shout he's not a top tier coach.
Recruiting doesn't win championships. If you're ok with our tradition growing dimmer every year because of the lack of recent success than, yeah, it's illogical.

Even if 9-3 he won't be back. He'll parlay into another job somewhere. He doesn't seem to want to be here anymore than he's wanted.

I think "poleing" Butch might happen if he loses Saturday...

I will not be "poleing" anyone that is not female so there's that. You are more than welcome to "pole" anyone you wish with your pole but I will have to politely decline

I can almost guarantee that. It will be a business decision.

Sometimes peoples own opinions cannot be trusted when making business decisions. For example, IF the vols were to go 9-3, finishing strong despite Butch people would not exactly see that as strong vote of confidence for a Butch jones led vols future. They would have little hope for next year, and see the 9-3 as a fluke, or remember the chaos, and debacle the season has been. They would understand that the SEC EAST will be forever out of reach and remember the in game failures all too vividly.

In short, the vols fans simply KNOW Butch too well at this point. We know who he is and what he is capable of. A Butch led future holds no surprises.

HOWEVER,lets say Currie hold a pole, at the end of the season. And fans get to decide Butch's future based on this poleing action.

The poll says...

Should Butch be fired after his 9-3 season?

Fact is, most vol fans (and all fans of other SEC TEAMS) would say NO. He should not be fired. The results would probably be something like 60% to keep, 35% to fire, and the obligatory 5% not sure.

So we would keep Butch, and probably fire Currie instead, because he asked the WRONG QUESTION.

Another off-season of Butch would result in little excitement, recruiting class disappointment, apathy and massive drop-off in season ticket sales, donations etc, due to the real issue. Very Low Consumer Confidence in Butch Jones. Very Low Excitement for the future under Butch Jones. Bubonic Apathy in the fanbase.

The end result would be a further damaged brand, limping along, empty seats, more media lynchings, more cliches and jokes.

It would simply be a stay of execution. And that helps no one.

The questions I ask now and those Currie must ask is...

1. On a scale from 0-10, What is your general level of excitement for a Butch Jones led Vol program in 2017?
1b. What was it in 2016?
1c. Estimate that level for 2018?

2. Does the program at present seem closer to, or further away from championships at present time?
2b. If Butch were to remain coach, predict the year he brings home an SEC CHAMPIONSHIP.

3. If Butch were to remain coach for the 2018 season do you see yourself attending more games next year or less?
3b. Or you more likely, or less likely to make donations in order to purchase season tickets?
3c. If you are a current season ticket holder, estimate in % your probability of renewal. From 0-10 what factor does Butch Jones play in that decision? Explain if other reasoning is deciding factor.
3d. Do you see yourself spending more in the upcoming season than you currently spend on Vols merchandise? Or less?

So play along if you like, what are your answers volnation?

9-3 he is safe, are you crazy!

At 9-3 he will not be gone. Us fans will still go to games, buy merch, and yell woo during rocky top.

People are crazy if they think he will coach long enough this season to get to 9-3. There wouldn't be enough players left to field a team.

9-3 would mean he lost to Bama who really thinks we have a possiblity to beat BAMA? He will be here if he beats SC and loses to BAMA and here until he loses a game he shouldn't lose.

I think he can go 8-4 and lose to LSU and there still be a possibility he is here at the end of it all, no guarantee of course but a possibility!

I don't agree with it, but I suspect you're probably correct. Unfortunately it would be the most unimpressive 8-4 or 9-3 in UT history.

It would mean we lost to UF, UGA, Bama, and LSU - the 4 "helmet" schools on this year's schedule.

And defeated GT, ISU, UMass, USC, UK, SoMiss, Mizzou, & Vandy. Most of these teams are homecoming-type games we should win on talent alone.

But like I said, I think you're correct and then we get another year full of turmoil and cliches just like this one if we lose the opener to WVU. And then we get the honor of playing UF, UGA, AUB, Bama in a row. Does anyone legitimately think this team and staff is equipped to make a competitive go of that schedule? :ermm:

From what I’ve heard....and I’m certainly no expert....all poleing sessions are voluntary and anybody that participates in the poleing always professes their preference for the team they prefer.

My feelings also. 9-3, stay close to Bama (within 17) and he comes back. Just my gut feeling. :ermm::ermm:

9-4 with a close loss to LSU and not getting embarrassed by BAMA (i.e. hard play the whole game) equals Butch is the coach for 2018. That comes with the assumption that nothing major happens off the field, otherwise all bets are off.

Nobody is going to axe a coach with no regression in performance unless there are behind the scenes issues between that coach and the school leadership. {And yes, performance is measured in W's and L's.}

That said, I think we will know how likely 8-4 is on Saturday at 4pm (maybe sooner).
