Let's think about this from a big picture standpoint. With the offensive line and receivers in place..Maybe a new dynamic freshman qb..and a defense that will actually play in a scheme to compete..Butch will be coaching a team that will be comprised of 10th, 9th, 13th, 17th and now 21st ranked recruiting classes. He will be able to coach this group up to a level this year where we go to a bowl game and then build from there..Just a thought

The only problem is a lot of the people which made these recruiting classes ranked this high are no longer on the team

That's what I'm hoping for. Vols have gotta win some games before CBJ and staff can bring in some elite recruits.

Possibly. His biggest task is getting the players that are already there to buy in to his way of doing things.

I agree with the OP that the 2013 season will be better than most are predicting. That being said, probably half of those kids comprising those classes are no longer even here. Heck, around 1/3 of last year's class isn't even here any longer.

The bottom line is Butch is going to have to coach his way to the top. Tennessee has not been relevant since 2006, that would put these kids at 11 - 12 years old, and that was a one year flash. The great run lasted until 2003, which would put these kids at 8 - 9 yrs old. Tennessee is not as flashy as it once was. My hope that Butch can get more out of his players than their stars indicate. Look at what Bruce Pearl did with players on the court. He got Tennessee its first No. 1 ranking with players who ended up playing in Europe. Be patient and allow the "infallible" plan to work out.

This in conjunction with having the toughest schedule in the SEC. Makes for tough sledding. Butch is going to have to do something a UT coach hasn't done in well over a decade...get his team to OVERACHIEVE.

Gotta coach em up. He got the short stick coming in as late as he did, and the previous regime's inability to fill up the roster didn't help. There's going to be holes across the board even after a full year of his guys are on campus.

Tennessee's immediate success will be and should based on Butch's ability to evaluate talent in the spring and apply his scheme accordingly. He will be limited as to how "fancy" he can get until he has the players to match the system.

I wish him luck.

Spurrier and Petrino worked with less and pulled off 11 wins seasons and top 10 rankings. Jones will get his chance.

The O and D lines are loaded with upper classmen that are battle tested. Time for a coaching staff to get the most out of them with the right schemes, techniques and plays. This season should be a good season with a bowl. Going back to the 4-3 on D and running a similar zone blocking scheme with more quick traps and counters will help a bunch.

Getting them to buy into winning should not be too difficult. Calling the correct plays during game time to me is a whole lot more important. That and ensuring the players know where they are supposed to be on defense. I don't blame the young men on the field for that either. That is all on the DC and coaches.

Unlike our last 2 head clowns Butch has had past success, he knows how to win. We'll obviously be better when we have more talent but there's a lot to be said for better coaching turning things around quickly. Case in point is Meyer at OSU.

We had the National champs on the ropes in the 2007 SECCG but I agree with what you're saying.
