I saw them ask him about Tabor and other players commenting to the media. Butch says (I'm paraphrasing) that the best player shouldn't need extra motivation for big games. To me, there's too much history to let this go. Coach's answer seems to dismiss the fact that our Vols haven't look very motivated thus far in 3 games and really could use the attention surrounding this game as an opportunity to turn up the intensity. So is Jones missing the point here? Do you guys think Butch is just feeding us Coach speak and that the players actually ARE using this behind closed doors? What do you guys think?

I really appreciate all that Butch has done for UT but at some point I wish he would just call it for what it is. "Yes, it pisses us off and makes us want to go run it down their throats" would have been a great reply. Forget the coach speak. Football players get motivated when others trash talk unless they are just soft and fall apart. We need players with a chip on their shoulders and a coach that will motivate them to fight. We have played flat in two games this year that we should of dominated. It needs to change. No I'm not calling for a different Coach I would just like to see Butch get out of the shell he is hiding in.

Its interesting to me how so many people wish Jones would take a different tone, yet I have little doubt the same people would rip him for that tone if things didn't go right.

Absolutely no one would give him a pass if he talked trash all week then lost.

butch is in a no win situation until he wins. when you lose to your main rivals with regularity, nothing he does/says whether it's the same coach speak or if he lashes out, is considered good...until he wins, nothing he does works.

Cause Butch has been worrying all week about Florida players talking trash about the team? Who the hell cares what they have to say.

Why even acknowledge it publicly? I'm sure the players are well aware of the trash talking and will use it for motivation. I would much rather see this happen:

Random reporter: What do you think of Tabor's comments this week?
Butch: Who?

I'll pay to have Al Wilson flown in to give the pre-game and halftime speeches.

Anyone care to chip in?

Can we hire Spurrier as our spokesperson? One thing about Spurrier, win or lose, he's not afraid to lay it out there. He's an azz but he definitely got under lots of opposing coaches skin. I'm sure Fulmer hasn't forgotten.

no. Spurrier has been hired at Florida as a consultant.

why would the head football coach pander to a player on the opposing team?

I think there's a way to go about it without sinking to the turd players' level. Just simply say "we recognize what's been said and as coaches we are always looking for anything that we can to motivate our team to play the level of football we expect at the University of Tennessee. It's really one of the greatest rivalries in the country and the players are going into that with the right mindset."

I think that sounds a lot like a Butch sound byte. I think dismissing it kind of downplays the rivalry and although it has been very one-sided over the last decade I think it's important to use any extra motivation to swing the rivalry back in your direction. You just have to be careful how it's addressed in the media.

Youd rather Butch and the team get caught up in Floridas game so they are so jacked up they commit silly penalties and cant play the game the way they should?

I'm glad we have a coach who shows class and doesn't run his mouth like a child.

I hated Kiffin running his mouth and sounding like a punk.

Like I've said, you can't hide class.

If you have ever been in a locker room at any level you know what is said to the media and what is said to your guys are two totally different things.

Kiffin talked trash and lost. He got blasted.
Dooley threw players under the bus and got blasted.
Jones doesn't take the bait or throw players under the bus. He's doing the right thing. I'm sure they talk as a team. Now he has to win! GBO!!

Maybe he'll have a different tune after he beats Florida on Saturday? Maybe CBJ feels staring at 11 strait losses doesn't put one in position to engage in that sort of thing?
