Butch vs Media

These scholarship athletes are not employed, professional athletes of the NFL. We are not entitled to every detail of their lives up to and including the exact time and nature of injuries. Wes Rucker can go piss and moan to somebody who cares...which is to a mirror because no one else does.

The vast majority of the people on this board want to know about player injuries--and anybody who says they don't is lying. And I have no idea why Jones got paranoid about the media and injuries. It's stupid. What is his point? What's the point of trying to censor information?

It's a lose lose for Butch.

If you are going to start restricting media, just don't let them see practice to begin with. It's not fair to say "Hey, if you see something you can't report it because we say so" is silly.

I do not see that as a "lose lose" for Butch. I don't see it, or get that.

When the media is becoming a distraction for the players and staff because of erroneous reports, Butch and the powers that be lay down ground rules to stop it. The players appreciate that. Intelligent fans do not have to hear inaccurate reports. Future recruits see Butch will have their backs. And responsible media members know where the buck stops, and who to ask before they break a story, rather than looking like jackasses when they screw up.

Long term, I think this is a win on multiple levels.

Can't say as I blame them for limiting information because todays media makes the National Enquirer of 20 years ago seem like a pretty reasonable outlet.

Why do I see in my head, "Boy trapped in refrigerator eats own foot"

Think he "hides" anything? :)

Everything he can and then some would be my guess, but they have open practices in the preseason and certainly reporters state who is and who is not participating. Once the season starts, the clamps get tightened for sure.

This is not that. Their are league rules on when and what NFL teams release in terms of injury info and status and it has been collectively bargained..not the same in college ball, but YOU know that. :)

It's soooooooo funny how Vol fans are like "Good! We don't need inaccurate reports from the media!" when Vol fans went with a rumor from a non media source that North was out for the year and panicked, resulting in this now restriction.

You and I usually see eye to eye (For Cyclopskiller, RIP)
but when you say "the media screwed up" and imply that is justification, all I imagine, is my kids. One daughter "screws up" so I punish everyone.
Just feels weird.

Chargervol, this is off subject, but what happened to Cyclops?

UT football players are not average joes working at the hardware store. They are quasi-professional athletes and quasi public figures. When they practice and play, media watch them. Thousands of fans watch them play, too, and are keenly Tinterested in how they are performing. To say that North's family was needlessly alarmed about his status is stupid. What, North can't call or text them within an hour or two? Please. A coach can't call them? Von Pearson was investigated by the police for sexual result--that's news. Jones is just trying to become a control freak--and it won't work. Does he really think not disclosing information will help? That is exactly what sparks speculation. If you don't want rumors and speculation about an injury, then you have somebody say: "Marquez North sprained his knee yesterday, and the doctors tell me he'll be out a week or two, but should be good after that." Everybody comes to this board to lap up every bit of information about the team and its players--and for people here to wag their fingers at the media is a joke.

Actually I think it takes balls of brass to go to a luncheon about a week ago and use the media to get info to fans that a high profile commitment is imminent and then turn around and enact this.

Nobody is going to stop information from getting out about athletes--whether it is factual, speculation or rumor. Information will get out; it always does because lots of media cover teams, colleges and pros. There is a demand for it--that's why all of YOU are here, after all. If Jones thinks he can stop rumors or speculation from spreading on the internet, he's a lot more naive than I thought.

This is kind of silly. I mean really. One slip up with north? And it really wasn't that big of a deal. Now we won't know anything that's going on in practice. We won't know who in the world is injured until the first game.

If you refer specifically to injuries, perhaps so. But, you can look on this board and on the recruiting board and see threads reporting that Preston Williams has passed the retake of the ACT or that he failed it. You even have a moderator from the Rivals site claiming that the odds of him going to a junior college are slim as the time extends.

This new policy will not stop the average fan from posting rumors that they get either from reading another post or through their own source. But what it hopefully wills top is media members reporting on injuries and the seriousness of them without waiting for a report from the athletic department.

The media has a responsibility of getting the new out to the public. But, if they have a problem getting the news correct on a consistent basis, then this is what happens. Especially when they are dealing with information on 17 - 21 year olds.

This isn't even about the "media." It's about the internet. Anybody can throw out crap info about anything, and it can go viral. It doesn't take a media report to do it. If Jones wants to stop rumors and speculation, then he and the UT media-relations department should report the extent of injuries--that's how you stop rumors. And Jones should stop trying to be a control freak.

This is about people with access reporting things that did not need to be out there. And I am all for Butch being a control freak, especially when he predecessor couldn't even control himself. If that means you and I have to wait for an accurate report, I am man enough to handle that.

As to Butch and UT media reporting the extent of injuries, they don't have x ray vision. Neither does the media. Early reporting of injuries in the past is fodder for opponents. If you know someone has a bad knee or shoulder, many opponents will keep that in mind.

So go ahead and call Butch, or someone else at the program and tell them you don't like this. I am sure they will give your opinion all the attention it is due.

Butch doesn't owe the media anything. It's his program and he can run it however he wants. Whatever butch says is best for the program is good with me.

Not really the point.

If you let media into practice, they should be able to report what they see, plain and simple.

Sorry, not as in the market, I also invest funding in varying projects so I do get reports if anything changes positive or negative.

I'm glad that Butch has responded to irresponsible reporting by imposing restrictions. How else is he suppose to encourage the media to report accurately rather than fear monger just to get clicks? How many false reports have we as fans freaked out over in the last few years? Have you noticed that the ridiculous false reports are becoming more frequent? It's because their is a huge prize for being the first to report but almost no punishment for reporting falsely so outlets just keep taking guesses hoping to land on a gem. Other coaches and universities are already acting in a similar manner as Butch & UT.

Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on how you look at it, it is about making money. If all coaches were completely forthcoming about everything that went on with their programs, NCAA would close half of them down and the other half wouldn't have any fans show up.

Win games, make money so fans have a better game viewing experience and spend more money, and so more recruits come there to help the university help the fans spend more money. And hope someone gets an education out of it. You may not like it but that's the way it works (IMO).

Oh yeah, I'm saying if he shuts out the media, he just needs to have better press releases. We don't need every detail just a quick rundown of who's suiting up, any injuries ( after they are confirmed and allowed to be released) and maybe players that performed above the norm.

I wonder if he considered selective members... Or if that's allowed.
