Johnny beat Bama. He came here right after Pitt won a n/c with Tony Dorsett. He was very charismatic. Always remember coaching shows, he's say "Get those hands up" , and 9-2 will do. Seems he always went for the tie instead of the win. Beat Miami in Sugar Bowl. Best come back victory ever at Notre Dame. I recall towards the latter part of his career, coming up 24 interstate to the game and a sheet/banner hanging over the bridge "Tennessee made a Majors mistake".He loved the Vols and Tennessee though, make no doubt about that.

Johnny was notorious for winning one a year he wasn't supposed to win but losing one or two a year he wasn't suppose to lose. So far Butch has just mastered the losing one or two a year he wasn't supposed to lose.

Johnny had also been a legendary player and Heisman runner up at UT, and had just won a national championship. That buys you more time

How? And Why?? And I'm not sure if that's really true. Imagine if Peyton Manning came in here and had the same record as a head coach that Majors had. We would be clamoring for change. and if you disagree then you clearly haven't paid attention to the culture we live in.

Majors lived in a different time. Maybe one we should consider revisiting instead of this knee jerk snobbish spoiled culture we have created where fans demand instant gratification and the media has bought in that it is normal..

Johnny was a Tennessee Legend, had a National Championship Ring and had won NATIONAL COACH OF THE YEAR.

He also didn't use ridiculous cliches and BS stats to try and prove his worth.

He also made a total income from UT of less than $200,000 a year in 1986....That's about $590,000 adjusted for inflation.

If Jones wins a Natty, coaches a Heisman Winner, Wins National Coach of the year, takes a public speaking class and makes less than $600,000 a year......he could stay here as many years as Johnny did........but he literally hasn't done a SINGLE ONE of those things.

It pains me that people are too lazy or too stupid to realize the differences in these two situations. It is comparing apples to bowling balls.

I'll give credit where it is due, but I will also point out the shortcomings (which unfortunately have and continue to overshadow the successes).

For instance, Dobbs played lights out Saturday--best game I have ever seen him play. Our defense looked lost.

Our Special Teams are very good, but other teams know that and due to the silly "safety rules" the kickers kick the ball out of the endzone to take our ST out of the equation.

Our O-line has been awful all year. Our RBs and Dobbs have EARNED every yard.

Our coaches put up with mouthing off and bad attitudes for much too long. That kind of stuff must be handled immediately.

Our excessive number of injuries, while unfortunate, point to a larger issue that must be addressed before next season.

Our recruiting has been great and needs to focus on filling the gaps we have.

The loss at USCjr was inexcusable, injuries, hurd, or not. The gameday preparation has been inconsistent and the team has not looked ready to play in the 1st half several times this season.

We have won 8 games and should win 9. The bowl we get will likely be another letdown.

We should be playing Saturday for Atlanta, now we are playing for a Dec 30 or 31 bowl against an overrated team

Oh no you don't Chief. People don't forget that because it's not remotely true.

Majors was wildly inconsistent at Tennessee, was up and down his entire career at Tennessee until he finally hired the right offensive coordinator in 1989 .....Phil Fulmer. They then, FINALLY, had some consistency under Majors and had 3 consecutive 9+ win seasons....something Majors hadn't for in his first 12 years at UT.

Fulmer then took a very good, solid program, which he had a big hand in helping to build, and turned it into something that Majors could never dream of....a national powerhouse and National champion.

It was 6 years after Majors was gone, in 1998, when not one single player that Majors had ever recruited or coached was on the roster, that Fulmer led the Vols to an undefeated 13-0 season and national championship. At that point Fulmer was 66-11-1 as Tennessee's head coach.

Majors should get credit for being an all-time great player and longtime coach at Tennessee who came back home to try and rebuild the program back up. He had very mixed results and moderate success at doing that until year 13 of his 16 year tenure here. Actually, the administration here should be given a lot of credit for staying with him as long as he did and allowing him all that time to finally get it fairly right at the end.

Yeah, um, and this is why Fulmer had all of these other programs beating his door down to hire him? Fulmer even said it had to be "the right situation". That translates to "already established program"!
