Really impressed me in a bunch of ways. First off...we came out really chippy and got penalized several times early (which can sometimes be a good thing). He just paced the sidelines without any reaction at all. We've seen coaches get up in their players faces and humiliate them (ala dabo). But he kept it chill. Which probably meant he didn't mind it. I thought that was exactly the right thing to do and we eventually settled in.

Secondly, once we got the lead we didn't settle for fgs. We went for it several times while in fg range, even though we alread had a sizable lead. I think that's so good for the psychology of the team. It's establishing a mentality that we are going to always go for the kill. We didn't always do that this year (and that not to be critical, just a fact). Also, along similar lines, once dormady came in we continued to attack. It was really cool of Butch to let dormady air it out and ultimately get a td.

And once again Butch seemed to allow the excessive celebration penalties without getting pissed at anyone.

Not that my opinion matters (any more than anyone else's) but I've been critical of the game management/conservative decisions Butch has made this year. However, I have to eat some crow. He did everything perfect today. It was like he was just real loose and confident.
Anyway...everyone should be PUMPED about 16!

I was a little concerned he didn't do anything, but the more I think about it, it was the first couple series and a big game so it wasn't like the 4th Q and players were getting frustrated. So now I agree.

As long aa he doesn't start clapping and.slapping butts.

Glad to read your post, chattavol420, like when a guy is open to reassessing. Agree with your points, too. Go Vols!

I too have been critical of game management and conservative play calling this season. Hopefully, today shows that the staff learned from those mistakes and that the future is bright.

Save me a plate of that crow, even though I ate it earlier this year. After the Florida debacle, I was very critical of this staff and said they too hard headed and would not change their ways. Butch did change and we did what we had to do to win out, and that's the very reason I drove from TN to Tampa to see us finish! One of the best times I've ever had, seeing us take the next step to regain the swagger we use to have! GBO!

It's ok to criticize poor coaching and also praise good coaching. Good points

Butch coached a hell of a game today, and the team left it all on the field. My only complaint about coaching is that I think Butch should have pulled Jennings for the rest of the first half for that stupid unsportsmen like conduct in the first quarter. I can't stand it when players get those types of selfish penalties that are costly to the team and just make the program look like we have no class. Those types of penalties kill you (and will kill us) in big games (next season) where teams know how to capitalize off of a 15 yard loss in critical situations. I hate seeing our team get pushed back (often risking the chance of getting a first down and ending a drive) because one idiot can't just shut his mouth or restrain himself from hitting someone well after the whistle. Butch needs to bench these kids for at least a quarter when they do it in the beginning (even when the opponent is weaker) so that we will be more disciplined in big games like VT, Alabama or in the SEC Championship.

The guy was holding Jennings out of bounds, I would of thrown him on his ass too so not mad about it.

Jennings was going at someone ALL day...needs to be a Safety so he can hit boys on the regular...

Butch handled it JUST RIGHT.
We knew Northwestern was coming to town with a physical game. You don't beat Physical teams by laying back...you have to be aggressive and go after them.
When you do that..."Stuff happens". Butch let our guys go after them...and didn't freak out when a couple of mistakes were made...THAT'S Coaching.

Super class act on Butch's part going out and checking on the injured Northwestern player late in the game!
So proud he's our coach!

I don't know if I believe you or you just woke up and felt like cooking up some likes :)

j/k..you made some really good points! Stoked about '16.

Let's just hope he has learned some things over the season and develops more of a kill attitude!

Go Vols!

Butch knew it was a BS call.

It wasn't very smart of him but stuff happens. It wasn't like he did it all game and killed us with penalties!
I'm not saying it was ok for him to do it b/c no matter the situation...restraint is key b/c it could hurt us in key situations.

That being said....I would think twice before calling one of our players an idiot. I doubt you would say it to his face and it only looks cowardly of you.

It wouldn't have been a penilty as long as he did it in bounds. No big deal, like the unsportman like conduct penilty with Kamara running on to the field with his helmet off. just pointing out one of the reasons Butch was so lax about it, to go along with your point.
