Josh Dobbs may make Debord a hot item. I'm not bashing DeBord until november 1st and not then if we are winning. Coach Jones attitude is he is going to kick butt this season regardless of the OC hire. I really think he's laying it all out this season. I got to roll with him and look forward to a season many have never seen as fans. My hopes are nothing short of 10 wins and a bowl win.:rock::rock:So what do you guys gain from telling everyone how horrible of a coach DeBord is? I swear Volnation only cares about who is right first

See, I was one of the negas on here that adamantly opposed Sunseri. Here is why:
19851992 Pittsburgh (DL/LB)
1992 Pittsburgh (AHC)
1993 Iowa Wesleyan (AHC/DC/ST)
1994 Illinois State (DC)
19951997 Louisville (LB)
19981999 Alabama A&M (DC/LB)
2000 LSU (LB/ST)
2001 Michigan State (LB/ST)
20022008 Carolina Panthers (DL)
20092011 Alabama (AHC/LB)
2012 Tennessee (DC)
20132014 Florida State (DE)
2015present Oakland Raiders (LB)
DC experience in bold. Everything else says this:
* Excellent position coach. Poor DC.
This is why Sunseri never got sniffed for a legit DC job until Dooley's dumb@ss came knocking and hasn't had a sniff since.
Now, here's DeBord's experience:
19821983 Franklin (IN) (OL)
1984 Fort Hays State (OL)
19851986 Fort Hays State (OC/QB/WR)
19871988 Eastern Illinois (OL)
19881989 Ball State (OL)
19901991 Colorado State (OL)
1992 Northwestern (OL)
19921996 Michigan (OL)
19971999 Michigan (OC)
20002003 Central Michigan
20042005 Michigan (ST/RC)
20062007 Michigan (OC/TE)
2008 Seattle Seahawks (Asst. OL)
2009 Seattle Seahawks (TE)
20102012 Chicago Bears (TE)
2013-2014 Special Olympics Administrator
2015-Tennessee Volunteers(OC)
Note the stark drop-off in level of responsibility after the 2007 Michigan OC disaster. Asst OL -> TE is a demotion in the coaching world. TE -> Special Olympics Administrator is nothing more than "we remember what you did, we'll hook you up with a worthless job as thanks".
People on here are clammoring to post stats from 1997 to prove why DeBord is a good hire. 1997. Why not just bring in ole Fulmer, Lloyd Carr, the Nebraska staff and other relics of the 90s and remake the power team?
When Jones said "we hire by fit, not by resume" I was scared. In every industry I've worked in you are what your resume says you are. When you're a 15-year engineer and you're applying for a manager's position and you have no management experience... people will ask why you were never given lead on any project. There are great engineers that are horrible managers. That's why they stick to being great engineers.
Coaching works the same way. There are great position coaches that make horrible coordinators. There are great coordinators that make horrible head coaches.
Guys like Chavis, LeBeau, Capers, Kiffin know their place. They're fantastic DCs. They were either utter failures as HFC or they just realized it wasn't for them and never took any offers.
But swallowing one's pride and saying "I'm just not good enough for it" is tough to say. Especially in an alpha-male type industry that football breeds.
And Jones hiring DeBord is nothing but nepotism and running away from hiring a guy that could threaten your position. Fulmer did the same thing with OCs. He never hired a guy and let him take the full reigns. Always stuck his nose in and micromanaged.
I can't understand why people care who he hires. If they lose, does it matter who he hired and if they win does it matter who he hired?
Seems like many on VN enjoy worrying. They need to expand their lives, there are much better things to worry about.
With the hiring of Mike Debord, Butch has sent a clear message to Volnation: "Shut-up and strap-in."
This hire means that Butch believes the Vols will win the East in 2015 and beyond.
High-octane OCs with offenses 70 spots higher than Mike Bajakian's (despite being on less money) were not needed. The guy who designed 3-plays that won Charles Woodson the Heisman is all that is required for Championships now.
In essence, Butch has said that sjt18 and MedicT could be co-OCs and he would still win the East.
I've got a lot of faith in Butch, and he has given all of us the ultimate Butch-slap. Butch has got this.
OUR way? As far as I can figure, there are only about a dozen in that "our" category, DD. I'm not part of that parade float and neither are most of us in VN. It's just a noisy minority who, as one VNer put it, are persistent "hand wringers" (good one). I say welcome CMD. You're the man.We had 2 weeks to kick this can. I can understand questioning the hire but Butch gave everyone plenty of warning to vent beforehand and come to terms. It's done and we have a tremendous new class and a ton of promise for 2015 and beyond. Butch may not do it our way but he's consistently improved our FB team so chillax and let the good times roll.
Yeah, who wants some relevant scrub from TCU or a guy named after a country?
What this says to me is:
* Butch Jones is nepotistic and is afraid of bringing in a guy that wants to run his own system.
* Butch wants a "yes man" that will run his system. Not some outsider that would come in and "shake up the house".
* A younger coach under you is a threat. He doesn't want a usurper on his hands.
Butch has shown he's a great recruiter and IMO not much else to this point. His offense completely sputtered at times and looked to only work when Dobbs/Hurd made fantastic individual efforts which reflects them... not Bajina or Lyle.
This hire is underwhelming. Having to cite stats from 1997 is just pathetic. Why is every other football program in the country not biting on this hidden gem? Why are we always the butts of the Sunseri jokes?
I can't understand why people care who he hires. If they lose, does it matter who he hired and if they win does it matter who he hired?
Seems like many on VN enjoy worrying. They need to expand their lives, there are much better things to worry about.
Ok, we need an OC and evidently here's the profile of the ideal candidate...
1. Has been out of football for 3 seasons
Been a coach for over 30 years. I'm sure he hasn't forgot how to coach.
2. Is currently an the Olympic team administrator for a University
Which adds to his resume. UT does have a track program that could use some "Olympic Administration"
3. Hasn't called a game as an offensive coordinator in 8 years
But has still been heavily involved with offenses for over 30 years.
4. Has little to no experience (reported) coordinating/teaching a spread offense. Ran a power I, pro style offense at Michigan
Oline schemes - TE schemes are the trick with the spread. CMD has plenty of experience in this regard.
5. Last time he teamed with our current head coach, they lost 34 of 46 games.
Any idea of what Joe's they had to work with? Competition?
6. Hasn't and doesn't coach QBs..... when we have 3 true freshmen QBs coming in who will desperately need to be developed, especially Jennings.
Umm, Bajakian was QB coach under DeBord at CM, so in essence, DeBord tutored Bajakian as a QB coach.
7. He had great success in as a college OC..... in 1997.
Let's hope he has great success at UT in 2015 and beyond.
Now you tell me.... if we rolled out this profile to you before any names were mentioned and said this is the guy we're looking for, what would you have said.
I'm certainly gonna give Butch my support and trust and DeBord may wind up being wildly successful here, but damn man..... how can anybody be excited about this hire at this point?
