Butch tells Volnation "Shut-up and strap-in"

The biggest problem I had with the hire was the propaganda machine that's been churning for weeks. Just level with us. Don't say you've been scouring the country looking for the "best of the best", doing lots of interviews in airports, that Debord's in high demand for a number of NFL jobs, etc. We all know Butch has had Debord locked in since the weekend after the Bajakian announcement. We all know Butch chose him was because he was a friend who gave him a chance once upon a time. A guy he respects, trusts, and is familiar with. It's a buddy hire rather than a resume one. Butch shouldn't act like it's otherwise. Propaganda makes it seem to me that he too doubts his choice.

Ok, we need an OC and evidently here's the profile of the ideal candidate...

1. Has been out of football for 3 seasons
2. Is currently an the Olympic team administrator for a University
3. Hasn't called a game as an offensive coordinator in 8 years
4. Has little to no experience (reported) coordinating/teaching a spread offense. Ran a power I, pro style offense at Michigan
5. Last time he teamed with our current head coach, they lost 34 of 46 games.
6. Hasn't and doesn't coach QBs..... when we have 3 true freshmen QBs coming in who will desperately need to be developed, especially Jennings.
7. He had great success in as a college OC..... in 1997.

Now you tell me.... if we rolled out this profile to you before any names were mentioned and said this is the guy we're looking for, what would you have said.

I'm certainly gonna give Butch my support and trust and DeBord may wind up being wildly successful here, but damn man..... how can anybody be excited about this hire at this point?

So try a post focusing on the positives of DeBords career and then compare if you going to give support.

If Saban can make the playoffs with Kiffin as OC, the sky's the limit for the Butch/DeBord combination.

Like Kiffin or not he is a good OC. Wes Rucker made a good point, so far butch has earned the benefit of the doubt. He has so far delivered on his promises and until he shows us otherwise we should trust his decisions. So welcome aboard Debord I have faith.

lil kiffy is huge douche, but one hell of a OC,,,,made Cromp daddy look awesome, with 2 260 lb walk-on olineman, do not like him and hes not a great head guy, but give credit where its due

And figures out ways on get the ball to his best playmakers. i.e. Cooper. Except against tosu where he abandonded the run game.

I stopped in for more information on this hire, and I see a few of the reds are well-lathered over this one. Debord has been a few places and seems to be well-esteemed in the coaching game....what gives?

My 12 year old has doubts about this hire. He also had doubts about some of the offensive play calls this year, waiting so long to play Dobbs and starting Peterman against Florida.

I simply say, have faith son. We are getting a new OC for a reason.

Butch is the man, until/unless he proves otherwise.

Mizz won the East last year with the #79 ranked Offense in the Nation. TEN finished #78. However the MIZZ Def finished #26, TEN #40. Defenses win Championships which we will be much improved so I think we will be fine, Gol Vols!

Sark did that. Kiffy just hung onto the coattails.

Yeah, he was position coach and then passing game coordinator/co-OC but had nothing to do with it. Must be fun to ignore facts to support an opinion fueled by dislike for a guy.

Why don't you help me with the positives? I'm honestly open to hearing them because I'd feel much better. Only ones I see are his success as Michigan's OC in the late 90s, his experiences in the NFL and his experience coaching OL should help Mahoney. What else you got?

Yeah, who wants some relevant scrub from TCU or a guy named after a country?

What this says to me is:

* Butch Jones is nepotistic and is afraid of bringing in a guy that wants to run his own system.

* Butch wants a "yes man" that will run his system. Not some outsider that would come in and "shake up the house".

* A younger coach under you is a threat. He doesn't want a usurper on his hands.

Butch has shown he's a great recruiter and IMO not much else to this point. His offense completely sputtered at times and looked to only work when Dobbs/Hurd made fantastic individual efforts which reflects them... not Bajina or Lyle.

This hire is underwhelming. Having to cite stats from 1997 is just pathetic. Why is every other football program in the country not biting on this hidden gem? Why are we always the butts of the Sunseri jokes?

Butch Jones has delivered on everything he's promised so far. Don't see why we should doubt him now.

I'd have been happier settling for the wrong fit of someone who has called plays in this decade.

NEGAVOL

Now. Get out of VN with your expectations of competency.

Best thing, at least, Jones is recruiting well to stock the shelves for the next bargain bin hire UT makes.

The offensive coordinator should run the offense that the head coach wants to run

It may work out. It may not. None of us have any way of knowing.

There is nothing to suggest there weren't other, more qualified candidates interested in the job though.

The posturing of there actually being a "search" and DeBord actually having other coaching offers on the table rings hollow and borders on being ludicrous though.

If Jones believed so strongly in him, why wasn't this announced a week ago?

With the hiring of Mike Debord, Butch has sent a clear message to Volnation: "Shut-up and strap-in. A man of Mike DeBord's high character will help to maximize each and every player's po-tential. We have the bricks in place to win SEC championships. This hire gave us the opportunity to get better, even if we were already the best football staff in America."

Maybe his doubts were in the fan base and not his choice.
