Butch Jones: It takes six or seven years in the SEC to build a program

An excerpt from the article...

While we live in a world of instant gratification, Jones — just in his 3rd season in Knoxville — scaled back expectations a little and indicated that he may need an additional three years at the least to fully bring the Vols back to prominence. Jones identified weak spots right now in the program such as the offensive line, defensive line and receivers.

Most of us have figured out that almost anything that comes out of his mouth is BS coach speak

No one will take this seriously, as they shouldn't. Butch doesn't even believe it.

Remember, we are talking about the guy who said "Best Staff in America"

Probably not the best timing of that opinion with a divisional opponent looking at returning to the SEC Championship game in year one of a "rebuild". Butch needs to win out and get to Atlanta next year.

At least he recognizes the obvious areas of need! We have had coaches in the past that only thought about magic dust when it came to acknowledging weaknesses.

It will be a great run. 2016 is going to be a great year for Vol fans, but probably not to those that demand a NC. Those type of fans are only happy once or twice in their lifetimes.

Butch is probably going to do better than his 6 year prediction, and hopes to look like a hero when it does happen early, but there is no panacea here. With a few coaching tweaks, he could accomplish the seemingly impossible next year, but most likely in the next 3 as he states.

I don't think national championships should be the expectation but if we win the east we will have opportunities to win conference titles and get in the mix. I don't see the SEC champ being excluded from the playoff

It actually does take 6-7 years if you are Butch Jones and you are doing on the job training. He is just setting the fans up for next year when he has those in games melt downs.

CWM was a great recruiter while he was at Florida. CJM is very fortunate.

That offense Florida has is not good and CJM has maximized their potential through scheme. They have one legitimate NFL prospect at receiver. I don't see NFL talent on that side of the ball. I don't see the pass-rushers or linebackers they have had in the past either though it is a good group with Bullard being the only true standout. DB's are really good/great, RB's are serviceable.

I see there's already a thread on this started by one of our resident ever-so-popular Gator fans on this board.

Feel free to merge mods. My mistake.

A defense like Florida's will win championships. Their offense doesn't have to be perfect.

If he means 6 yrs to win a championship ok, that's how long it took CFP (who happened to be 11-1 yr 3).

Fulmer didn't have to rebuild he inherited a loaded roster. Florida didn't need a complete rebuild like we did. McElwain inherited a loaded defense and thats what he's winning with. Coming out of the Kiffin/Dooley era 4-5 years before being able to match up against the top SEC teams us not unreasonable for Tennessee. If we had the in state recruits like Georgia and Florida have then 3 years would be reasonable.

Btw, having Ray Goff at Georgia, Sparky Woods and Brad Scott at USC jr., Ken Hatfield and Tommy West at Clemson made recruiting almost to easy for Fulmer. He owned South Carolina and took the the top talent from North Georgia most years.

I don't think they are good enough to win a championship with that defense but they are good enough to be in every game. Coming off a 4-8 and 7-5 season I think they turned around quickly with what was a modest recruiting effort by UF standards.
