Breakdown of which states our signees are from in this recruiting class (9 total)

Tennessee = 6
Florida = 3
Georgia = 3
North Carolina = 2
Ohio = 2
South Carolina = 2
California = 1
Kansas = 1
Maryland = 1

In-State Signees = 28.5%
Out-Of-State Signees = 71.4%

The state of Tennessee has been producing more SEC-caliber athletes in recent years (19 from Tennessee this year compared to 20 from Louisiana and 24 from Alabama) and new coach Butch Jones will need to start taking advantage of that fact. Getting back into the Carolinas and into Ohio is important as well and it appears the doors to those states have at least been cracked open.

Our state has a lot more talent than we get credit for. CBJ preaching about owning the state may not seem like a big deal to some but it really is, imo. There has been too much SEC level talent leaving the state in recent years.

We need these kids to look at UT like they use to. We need them growing up wanting to stay instate & bleeding orange. There's enough talent here to where we can sign 10 or so a year every year & compete for championships.

I don't know about you guys but I love having a coach who really wants the homegrown kids to be the foundation of the program. If I didn't know any better I'd think CBJ has always been a Vol. I sense a family feel around the program that hasn't been there for quite a while. Getting these instate kids will make the family that much stronger.

While I would like to see this happen, I don't see it being realistic. Georgia's top four prospects--Nkedemich(?), Lawson, Montravious Adams, and Vonn Bell--all chose to go to school in other states. And the University of Georgia is arguably better than some of the schools they went to.

Even though I don't think it's realistic, I do think you have to try your best to grab the state's top talent.

Butch seems to be dedicated to locking down the state. The successful programs are built around in state players.
The SEC is a prime example of that. :yes:

Simply make sure you get at least half of the Top 15 players in TN every year and you will soon have a roster with 30 or more TN players on it. That sends the message to all state HS players that they are a priority and gets them thinking orange at a young age. The talent level of the Top 15 will average at a high 3* to low 4* nearly every year. The more you get in the Top 10 players, the better the team will be. Once you get over 40 on the scholarship roster from TN you will be a powerhouse to be reckoned with for years to come.

Then continue working Atlanta/GA, Carolinas, Ohio, and Florida for most of the rest. Roster problem solved.

Tennesseans are much more likely to be loyal to UT than Georgians are to UGA. ATL is SO big they've lost the loyalty factor. I lived there for 8-9 yrs & could count one 1 hand the number of people I knew that were actually FROM Atlanta & most weren't from Georgia. If Georgians were loyal to UGA in FB & BB, they'd never lose a game in either!! We need Tennesseans to be loyal!!

This process starts in the 9th grade with those special players breaking into the high school ranks and making an impact. You've got to build a relationship with them. Unfortunately for us, most high school seniors in 14' will have seen 4 different coaches since their freshman year. This alone has given us a disadvantage and has caused the boulder that CBJ has to push to be pushed "uphill".

I agree with you but Memphis is basically in another state with at least 5 other sec schools closer than UT is

Was just about to post this. There are a lot of talent-rich areas outside the state, which are much closer, where I would rather see this staff expend their energy.

You just have to find these local kids early and build a relationship with them. Some kids just want to get away for their college experience and I understand that. You also have to be careful about turning away the "fringe" guys that by their senior year they've become way better than the 4 and 5 star players that were really wanted. A fine line indeed. Honestly, these coaches don't use these Rivals, ESPN, 247 rankings anyway. They go for the fit and potential.

just wondering why did butch not recruit corn elder? he hasn't committed yet if we are looking for some game changers might be worth a try just to ask. Could end up being like the Randall Cobb situation.

I think CBJ is doing a great job of making it clear he wants to keep our state's young men in TN. He's definitely making the right moves and meeting TN coaches all over the state.

However, he can shake all the hands he wants, but that's only part of the battle. The other part is WINNING and I think we'll do a little more of that this season too... GBO!!

North Carolina and Virginia can be big for us as well. UNC/NC State/Duke aren't really on the level of UT and geography makes us one of the closest SEC schools for many of the NC recruits. Virginia Tech is a big deal to a lot of VA kids and UVa is doing some nice things with Mike London but the lure of the SEC could help us out there as well. Tennessee also doesn't come across as being that far away to kids from VA (source: I'm from VA and attended UT).

Yeah Logan Thomas wasn't the QB people had hoped for when he was converted from tight end.

Feel sorry for the guy, but I have to say, I'm very surprised that Beamer didn't pull him sooner in the season when he saw the product on the field.

They were, they took an unexpected step back from an 8 win season in 2011. Their recruiting has stepped up with Mike London, but the overall terribleness would allow us to recruit well against them, should it come to that.
