Butch praises freshman Theo Jackson

Josh Smith somehow never gets those. Of course it's hard to deliver great blocks during a fair catch.

I can live with Smith's fair catches. My biggest problem with Smith is he lets to many punts land without trying to catch them and it seemed like everytime he did, they did NOT take a UT roll

If you're a fair-catch safe option specialist? Best CATCH it. :)

All I know is Butch better make the RIGHT decison as well as the other coaches when determining who's going to play where and when. This has been an issue of Butch's; recognizing and playing his best options.

This better be one of those decisions he gets right. Vols will likely have to rely heavily on Special Teams to make up for any other areas lacking. Football is all about field position at it's core. Win this part of the game and you win a lot of games.....

thankfully, special teams has never been a big problem under Butch.

I respectfully disagree. If your not at practice you have no way to tell who the better player is. Even then it is hard to see the difference in two players that are near equal. The small sample you see in games isn't enough to compare players. You can't tell from today's game performance how good the player was last month. Even players can't tell you why they are up and down on any given day. Some players are just better when the lights come on. Then there is the deserving and earned issues.
If you had two players exactly the same (clones) and randomly pick one to start the second would be behind from an experience point of view. The second player has to wait for an opportunity to show he can get the job done. Likewise if the starter makes errors the backup gets in quickly.

Still don't understand why Callaway didn't get more punt returns after running one back last year.

The defense was so bad by then couldn't afford to lose a possession. CBJ was concerned Callaway's inexperience may lead to a turnover.

And yet Josh Smith actually committed one.

All smith does is fair catch. If he's back there 0 excitement.

"If he's back there 0 excitement." I remember not long ago we couldn't put anybody back there because of TOO MUCH excitement, i.e. fumbles. I am sure others remember those games under Dooley. We have come a long way back there.

We need someone electric returning punts. I want us to put a deadly weapon back there that has the chance of scoring each and every time they touch the ball when an opposing team punts. I want the same feeling as when Berry takes a KR, knowing at any moment he could make a move and take it to the checkerboards. I do not think that player is Josh Smith. Callaway was very impressive last season.

I want a sure handed dependable athlete that WILL NOT PUT THE BALL ON THE Ground...to me the most momentum changing play is a muffed punt/turn over. That's why you see teams take a shot down field immediately after this type of TO. It's really demoralizing to a team especially the defense....

Yeah, Butch really crapped the bed when he put Evan at kick returns and Cam at punt returns...

So definitely not Josh Smith then...since he slammed one into the ground...guess Callaway is the guy.

Yep. Last season turnovers ruined our season more than injuries did.

Every game we lost (except for Alabama) we had more turnovers than our opponent did.

7 in the A&M game.
3 in the SC game.
2 in the Vandy game.
