Butch plans to stay

I.E. He, is making, no plans to resign / he is actively not planning to resign. As family already said via espinn weeks ago, it's up to powers that be and the next coach will look like a genius (as no one is saying it about this one).

The powers that be have said after the FL loss, they're happy with this coach and that the picture is bigger than wins and losses in (americanized) football.

It's homecoming week and the board is here-to-hear specifically about plans of stadium renovations (not plans of coach renovations) from the ptb on thur.

We'll see.

Well this one certainly is no genius. I hope the next one does more here than just look like a genius for a couple of years. You make some great points. We will see what happens, but I don't see CBJ coaching at Tennessee next year.

CBJ still looking at the chart trying to figure out why the flea flicker QB draw did not work. His system is broken because the media keeps reporting fake news about him being an energy vampire. He still doesn’t realize his 5 star heart won’t win games.

Realistically the damage is already done. He should have been fired after SCar. The only reason he is still there is because JC must have no faith in any of the interim options on staff. Either way Butch is gone. Tennessee would do itself a favor by firing him sooner rather than later though. The longer this plays out the less attractive he is to other schools to help offset the buyout. He would have had a shot at a school like Kansas where the expectations are very low and winning 8 games a year would get him a statue. The way it’s going now he will be lucky to get a HC job in the MAC.

The only thing I can come up with is MAYBE Butch has agreed to lower his buyout if he is allowed to finish the season?

Or, the agent’s that have been contacted; their coach (client) do not have any interest in coming to TN.

Tennessee coach Butch Jones: No plans to resign after Sunday meeting

Jones said Saturday night he believes Currie will “absolutely” stand behind him for the remainder of the season.

This is coming down to how far Currie and the donors plan to dismantle this team. The recruits are decommiting and the current roster seems to be becoming a train wreck with injuries and discipline issues. The play calling from the coaches are at high school levels and the coach doesn't want any accountability. If it's not the end of the Butch Jones era... it could be the beginning of the end of Tennessee football.

Florida got it right! They didn't waste any time firing McElwain. Keeping Jones a minute longer will devastate any recruiting for next year.

No, what's dumb is the assertion by the OP that Currie and admin are trying to bring down the program. Just an asinine comment.

So you want him fired and a new coach hired asap. Ok, we fire him now. Who are you going to hire? Yeah, I know every kid on this board thinks we can go pay whatever sum it takes to get Kelly or Gruden. Look, if Kelly really wanted this job, it would be done by now. He'd be a fool to sign with a school at this point. No way his agent let's him remove all negotiating leverage by signing now. He will have Kelly wait until seasons end and cherry pick the job that interests him most. On top of that, he will have other openings to leverage the negotiations. I see no reason UT and Knoxville would be his dream job. So where's the rush? Only other guy that can take the job right now is Gruden and that's not happening so again, where's the rush?

So, now that Gruden and Kelly are out of the discussion, we fire Butch right now. Who do we sign now? Every other candidate that's hot property belongs to another school. They are in the middle of a season. You aren't hiring them until after the season ends. No matter how much whining and crying comes from fans, that simply isn't going to change. It's reality. Now you can argue, they could at least make contact thru back channels. So why can't we do that now? How do you know they aren't? I'm certain contact to gauge interest has and is being made through agents and groups. So what are we losing? No a damned thing. What do we stand to lose of we fire him now? Well, the assistants start beating the bushes for the next job. Kids stop working out and going to class which complicates things for the next guy.

Really, I just don't understand how this situation is so hard to understand. Firing Butch will happen, but it's not going to bring us a new coach until the season ends. It's not going to save recruiting. Folks just need to accept, there will be no new coach before seasons ends. Let's not pull the plug on our senior class mid steam. Remember, they've put a lot of work into this season. Most of them have only a handful of games left in their playing careers. Let them finish this instead of pulling the plug on them out of spite toward Butch. He's not a bad guy just a bad coach and he did a lot of good things to help this program. Shelve the hate for just a few more weeks.
my issue was with the reasoning the article presented.

that if the 2018 class was/is a motivating factor on this decision, then you could quell that issue by extending Butch and giving him a raise, or you fire him now and do whatever you have to get Chip Kelly or John Gruden. cause those are the only two candidates, really, that you would have a shot at hiring before the season ended, thus also "saving" the 2018 class.

i'm frustrated with this whole situation, and it's made more complicated from a perception standpoint since FL made such a quick decision, and can openly discuss its open position.

but logically, you have to assume that a lot has probably been happening behind the scenes, and that doesn't require Butch to be fired to happen.

Florida had cause that they might be able to vacate the buyout with.

And anytime you replace a coach, you lose most of that years recruiting class.

Is being dumb just a natural talent for you, or did you get a degree in it?

Currie is stupid because Butch is going to try to burn this thing to the ground before he leaves

My take is that Currie thinks Butch could bounce back next year. I don't think he's gonna fire him this year unless Gruden really wants the job. So maybe next year.

this is what ive been fearing.

im also fearing a gruden hire. hes never been a hc at the college level and that super bowl was 17 years ago. Lovie Smith made it to a super bowl too. Look at the illini now.

chip kelly has the saban story going for him. good ncaa coach. failed at the nfl. took over a historic sec university and bounced back. gruden is not who you really want people. gruden is who youve been told you want.

That meeting between Currie and Butch is looking more like he got reassurance that he will be the coach moving forward.

Nothing says "we, the fans, are serious; like a good organized mattress burning."

Maybe we can assemble one for this week before homecoming?

For the record I thought he should have been canned when he lost a chance at the sugar bowl to Vandy.
