Butch plans to stay

this is just ridiculous. "save recruiting"....if that's such an issue, then either fire him and announce as soon as you possibly can who the next guy as, or extend him and give him a raise.

this is just dumb.

A raise? WTF has he done to deserve a raise?

As usual our AD has proven himself incompetent and a disgrace. Fl is not afraid of consequences but with 14 chefs in the kitchen Tenn prefers to render our football team to a joke. Sickening.

Yep. One or the other has to happen. The silence of the AD has our 2018 recruits jumping ship.

We just need to accept the fact that Butch Jones has not been fired and our administration is giving him every chance to give them a reason to keep him. It puts the fanbase in a tough spot. We obviously want to support our players, yet how do influence the AD? It's by not going to games, buying merchandise, donating, etc. It is apparent that Butch cannot win big or consistently at Tennessee. The longer they drag this out the further they are running our program into the ground and making it that much harder for the next guy. It pisses me off. Why don't we have an admin and donors that truly care about what's best for Tennessee and share the same passion and love that we do for our Vols?! I know it's not all of them, but our admin continues to look like they have no clue what they are doing and make us look like idiots.

Coaches resign when it's clear they can't get it done and take a slightly lower buyout for a good reason.

It's to show their next boss/school they can be worked with.

He is actually really dumb if a decision has been made on him to not resign.

And just par for Butch Jones decision making skills.

Exactly. There is more money to be made down the road. Staying here, when all signs point to you being done, when the fans and even your own team have turned on you, when you are failing miserably at your job... it only makes you look stubborn and uncooperative.

At this moment Butch holds all the power.

Just keep doing his job and collect his checks.

If he gets fired he'll still collect his $8.3 Million.

He'd be a complete moron to resign and leave $8.3 Million that he can easily collect.

I also seriously doubt that Butch has any decent coaching offers sitting on his desk so his best move is to sit tight and keep doing his job and collecting his checks.

BIG $$$ power boosters could even force our AD into keeping Butch through next season despite how much hell raising fans may do.

Only thing we can really do is sit back and wait to see what happens.

VFL...GBO!!!

I bet he already has contacted his old boss for an assistants job next year

I've said this in other threads...Currie will not flip the switch until we are no longer bowl eligible...worst case scenario about all of this is Butch has done his job very well on the academic front and raised the APR to a point that we would be considered for a bowl at 5-7...which means Butch would be kept another year...

Why does Butch have a say in this? He shouldn't be allowed to plan to do anything!

I’m just praying that there’s a plan... and it involves getting the next guy locked in before we publicly dismiss Jones, like what Texas did with strong and Herman. Only 24 hours between announcements.

"Butch plans to resign and forfeit his large buyout. Wife agrees"

The above would make a unique thread title. Stop restating the obvious

No, what's dumb is the assertion by the OP that Currie and admin are trying to bring down the program. Just an asinine comment.

So you want him fired and a new coach hired asap. Ok, we fire him now. Who are you going to hire? Yeah, I know every kid on this board thinks we can go pay whatever sum it takes to get Kelly or Gruden. Look, if Kelly really wanted this job, it would be done by now. He'd be a fool to sign with a school at this point. No way his agent let's him remove all negotiating leverage by signing now. He will have Kelly wait until seasons end and cherry pick the job that interests him most. On top of that, he will have other openings to leverage the negotiations. I see no reason UT and Knoxville would be his dream job. So where's the rush? Only other guy that can take the job right now is Gruden and that's not happening so again, where's the rush?

So, now that Gruden and Kelly are out of the discussion, we fire Butch right now. Who do we sign now? Every other candidate that's hot property belongs to another school. They are in the middle of a season. You aren't hiring them until after the season ends. No matter how much whining and crying comes from fans, that simply isn't going to change. It's reality. Now you can argue, they could at least make contact thru back channels. So why can't we do that now? How do you know they aren't? I'm certain contact to gauge interest has and is being made through agents and groups. So what are we losing? No a damned thing. What do we stand to lose of we fire him now? Well, the assistants start beating the bushes for the next job. Kids stop working out and going to class which complicates things for the next guy.

Really, I just don't understand how this situation is so hard to understand. Firing Butch will happen, but it's not going to bring us a new coach until the season ends. It's not going to save recruiting. Folks just need to accept, there will be no new coach before seasons ends. Let's not pull the plug on our senior class mid steam. Remember, they've put a lot of work into this season. Most of them have only a handful of games left in their playing careers. Let them finish this instead of pulling the plug on them out of spite toward Butch. He's not a bad guy just a bad coach and he did a lot of good things to help this program. Shelve the hate for just a few more weeks.

He is now the most hated coach in UT history.

I still dislike Dooley much more. He quit on the job and burned bridges on the recruiting trial.

I don’t think Butch has quit. Despite being very disappointed this year I can also appreciate Butch for ending the bowl drought (not just appearances but winning them) and ending the FL and UGA streaks.

Still... in year 5, even if it is a rebuilding year, we shouldn’t be losing to SCAR and UK and struggling with winless G5 bottom feeders. For that and falling short last year when it was on a silver platter, it’s clear he is on a downward trajectory. It’s time to part ways.

He has a contract.

As someone who deals with contract law for a living, I get that. The intent of my comment was more about Butch having a say in planning to stay, rather than just being fired. He has a contract with a buyout. Pay the buyout and get him out of here. Our admin is starting to look like one that doesn't care about winning.

Unless they have Gruden or some other big name coach locked in and are just letting him play out the season because they have to pay him anyways, they need to start getting this done.

Maybe the headline says he "plans" to stay here because they gave him a choice of being fired now or coaching through the end of the season. On the other hand, I thought I read somewhere that the administration will not start actively pursuing coaches while we still have a coach employed at UT, so if that is the case, what are we waiting for?

I.E. He, is making, no plans to resign / he is actively not planning to resign. As family already said via espinn weeks ago, it's up to powers that be and the next coach will look like a genius (as no one is saying it about this one).

The powers that be have said after the FL loss, they're happy with this coach and that the picture is bigger than wins and losses in (americanized) football.

It's homecoming week and the board is here-to-hear specifically about plans of stadium renovations (not plans of coach renovations) from the ptb on thur.

We'll see.

You have to hand it to Dooley. That rascal made sure UT fired his butt in 2012. You could tell by his demeanor on the sidelines that night in Nashville.

The only way he resigns is if they work out a deal for his buyout and then they will allow him to resign and move on without having being fired on his resume...It makes him look like the good guy and that he cares about the program blah blah blah

Really? with his full buyout he could do this for the rest of his life.
