Tennessee coach Butch Jones: No plans to resign after Sunday meeting

Jones said Saturday night he believes Currie will “absolutely” stand behind him for the remainder of the season.

This is coming down to how far Currie and the donors plan to dismantle this team. The recruits are decommiting and the current roster seems to be becoming a train wreck with injuries and discipline issues. The play calling from the coaches are at high school levels and the coach doesn't want any accountability. If it's not the end of the Butch Jones era... it could be the beginning of the end of Tennessee football.

I want him fired ASAP (like a month ago). But he would be moronic and dumber than I thought if he were to resign and leave that much money on the table.

Just seeing what the fans will tolerate and still spend $$$ and support the school at this point.

Doesn't hurt Currie's bottom line as long as people still go to games

this is just ridiculous. "save recruiting"....if that's such an issue, then either fire him and announce as soon as you possibly can who the next guy as, or extend him and give him a raise.

this is just dumb.

He'd be an idiot to resign

Coaches resign when it's clear they can't get it done and take a slightly lower buyout for a good reason.

It's to show their next boss/school they can be worked with.

He is actually really dumb if a decision has been made on him to not resign.

And just par for Butch Jones decision making skills.

The only thing I can come up with is MAYBE Butch has agreed to lower his buyout if he is allowed to finish the season?

I don't necessarily agree with the way Florida and McElwain handled the coach separation but I do wish UT would learn from that and get rid of Butch now. The recruits are dropping like flies!

Here's what I think has happened:

Butch has been fired. Meaning, he knows that after this season, he will no longer be the coach of UT.

However, I think Currie has put it to him like this:

Butch, you can either:

1) Resign now, and we will rework your buyout to a number that works for both of us, and hopefully you can save face enough to get another coaching job.

2) Continue coaching, and finish the season, and we will pay you the whole buyout. HOWEVER....your PR record is crap. You're a slogan machine, you make headlines for all of the wrong reasons. Yes, your APR is good, and yes your players have been fairly good off the field. But you just accomplished something that only one other person did in 33 years (lose to Kentucky), and you run the risk of giving UT its worse season ever. You can keep coaching, but keep in mind, if you run this into the ground, that YOU will be the one looking for a new job, and YOUR resume will have a 3-9 possible record on it.

Basically....resign now and work with us, or finish out and risk not being able to find another job.

And of course, his stubborn self is gonna ride it out. This may be ugly. But maybe, after so many embarrassments, Butch will finally wise up and just resign while he still has a face to save.

I do have a theory about why nothing came out last night, Butch wanted Sexton with him during discussions. Sexton was in Gainesville with JM negotiationg his contract, could be why we have to wait another week.

At this moment Butch holds all the power.

Just keep doing his job and collect his checks.

If he gets fired he'll still collect his $8.3 Million.

He'd be a complete moron to resign and leave $8.3 Million that he can easily collect.

I also seriously doubt that Butch has any decent coaching offers sitting on his desk so his best move is to sit tight and keep doing his job and collecting his checks.

BIG $$$ power boosters could even force our AD into keeping Butch through next season despite how much hell raising fans may do.

Only thing we can really do is sit back and wait to see what happens.

VFL...GBO!!!

Of course he'll hang on to this job as long as he can, no other P5 school will take him. He's been exposed as an incompetent coach that can't develop talent or utilize it correctly. His "scheme" is garbage, his game management is atrocious, and he folds under pressure.
