Butch: Per experts, 2 to 4 wins.....

Maybe has to do with SELLING progress and marketing the program ESPECIALLY to RECRUITS. I am sure he appreciates all the help Vol fans give. The ones on Vol Nation more than any.

Say what ye will, but this is fact:

There were serious discussions on ESPN and various other media outlets about Utah State rolling in here with their Heistman candidate QB (lol) and beating us.

Others were playing off of KY's rebuilding process and questioning whether we could be them. Also, talk was that Vandy still had pieces in place to compete with us.

So, yeah. I heard many (granted, most not experts) saying not only would this be our first ever 8-loss season, but we should expect 9 losses to be a distinct possibility.

Must be referring to the negavols on this board - Lord knows they all view themselves as experts! :lolabove:
No. He was referring to all the excuse-making sunshine pumpers like yourself. Those NegaVols you're referring to EXPECT better from a program of this magnitude and want to fix what's broken. Not make a bunch of low-ball predictions and excuses like you typically do. :salute:

I think he is a good politician.
Before anyone jumps me, let me say this.
I am happy with 6-6.

What I'm saying is Butch realizes how the expectations of this fanbase rose after Dobbs took over and played the way he did initially. Like any good politician, Butch is trying to point out that this team overachieved. Whether they did or not is up for debate. It's all a ploy to keep the natives from getting restless and perhaps an attempt to make the job this staff has done look a little better than maybe it actually was.
It really is akin to Kiffin saying the only reason we were upset when he bolted was because we saw how good of a job he did. I don't mean that in a negative way at all. It's just part of the whole coach speak self-preservation thing that coaches have to do sometimes.

Given the injuries and other absences during the last couple games I'm willing to say the team slightly over achieved.

Maybe he's predicting next years record already. After yesterday I would have to rank TN and Vandy as the two worse teams in the SEC. That game looked like a game between the RAIDERS and the JETS. Neither deserved to win.

Since its up for debate....I dont consider this season an overachievement. 7-5 would have been slightly overachieving imo. I picked us to go 7-5 before the season started because I thought BJ could get this team to overachieve. I was wrong and frankly....we are lucky to be 6-6.

I would not say we are lucky to be at 6 wins. We have had a large number of injuries to key players and a sex scandal at the absolutely worst time. Many losses we were literally one play away from a win with one win in the same scenario. You say we are lucky? I don't see us being lucky.

Just for clarification...SUNSHINE PUMPERS predicted 2-4 wins? K...chachi.

Lol @ 2. I know he doesn't really believe there was an analyst that thought we would only win 2 of

Arky St
Utah St
UTC
UK
Vandy

I'm not even that pessimistic

Fortunately, the "negavols" are usually so far out in left field as to make it rather obvious that their opinions have no basis in reality. They twist and stretch information in great effort to support their agenda. They thrive on drama and seek to create it.

At one point, Arky State and UTC were the only givens by some out there...we had threads on here about it.

In the presser Butch talked about preseason expectations from the "experts". He mentioned that the experts had the Vols winning only 2 to 4 games this year.

You're thoughts?

When you lose your entire O-line and D-line in the SEC yeah I could see where the so called experts would say we would only win around 4 games.

Typical nonsense. We finished 4th in east because we beat USCe. Not a great team. Hard to play at perfect execution week in and week out at this level. Injuries and suspensions with such a thin team made that a tougher game than it should have been. Kids were not prepared to play. Several on here were thinking a 45-0 blowout. These kids were too. This is what happens when you read the other teams and your own press clippings. Coaches can preach all week long but they are kids.

I agree with you to an extent.
I have some concerns about gameday coaching and decisions. I am hoping that perhaps a lot of that is due to lack of talent and depth in some areas.
Time will tell.

I hope he uses that frustration to do a better job coaching and not to make excuses. I get that it's only year 2 and it takes a few years to recruit and coach up talent, but in the mean time either truthfully explain your situations or just shut up. He shouldn't be making excuses at this point.

No doubt there were threads, but I doubt there was anyone that said 2 wins preseason. 4, sure but not 2.

If Worley didn't get hurt 4 would probably have been the number. He would have been sacked 6-9 times last night.

He just won a game...what was he excusing?

Yet, Butch refers to predictions that, if one had given here on this site, would have been immediately labled "negavol".

Interesting.

Thats where we would be if we had followed their plan of starting Worley with Dobbs at 3rd string. Oh sorry, coaching criticism is off limits.

There were also threads predicting 9-3. Both extremes were wrong, the team achieved a record that I predicted. But, like Doyle I have concerns going into 2015 that cause me to temper my expectations for a run at the SEC East. Lack of Oline development and improvement over a 12 game schedule against some terrible defenses is a huge concern. Bajakian's offense is boring and predictable, but some of that could be oline problems. Defense will be better in spots, but LB is a concern.

On SEC network prior to the Utah state game, Paul Finebaum said that he wasn't sure that UT could beat Utah state. He also commented that UT would be lucky to win 5 games.

I'm sure in so circles he's considered an expert. Also I only read certain magazines and certain radio and TV sports analysts. I don't hear every experts opinion in the entire nation. So I cant speak for what Butch has heard and from who. Nor do I care.

You guys really pick apart every word this dude says and judge him and look for flaws and what not? For what? LOL What a joke.

This should be given a lot of consideration. Just Hurd's injury last night alone had great impact on how the game played out, and everyone will acknowledge the absence of AJ has changed the ability of our D to get off the field.
