Butch looks uninterested/disengaged lately

Not happy with Butch myself, think he's got his hands full. he's letting recruiting take a back seat and not driving excitement into a program that really by all accounts should feel sone excitement. It may not be how we all drew it up in our minds, but, much like this election the results are what they are. crying about the results at this pt is silly, and does no good. it makes YOU feel worse. i bet no one on planet Earth wanted ti beat SC more than those kids and CBJ. cut the guy some slack and move on, he isnt goin' anywhere any time soon.

Please provide the evidence that recruiting has taken a back seat? We just had a 4* LB commitment, a TE to commit and we are in on Felix a RB and other top players.

Second, you talk about not bring excitement, speak for yourself. I am really excited about being 7-3 with a chance to go the the Champ game with all the adversity this team has face I think that is a great accomplishment if we get there. You can choose to be excited or not. And if you want to bring up the USC game, we aren't the only top program that has had a disappointing game. Ask OSU and A&M.

One of Lyle's biggest problems has been transitioning to success. I think he is a great rally the troops, underdog, back in corner, kind of guy. He hasn't shown the poise id like to see to take the next step. The late game rallies were spun as a positive, while the unpreparedness that led to the deficits was brushed over. The truth is, there were serious issues prior to the injuries, and prior to the first game.

At first, the talent overcame the issues, but something bad was brewing. I think its still there. Sure, Hurd and Williams can become an easy scape goat, But they're gone, and if there are major defections in the off-season and recruiting steps back, how long can people blame a couple of players who are no longer there?

I've seen this side of Lyle first hand. Almost exactly a year ago, I was at a company dinner and he came by to say a few words. Most of it was fine, but he started talking about those who were against him and how he was keeping a list. It was a circle the wagons speech and just came off to me as desperate, not to mention out of place. My wife still jokingly asks me if I'm on the list.

I think Butch is a script guy. He has a good script, but i think he is lost when off script. All coaches have cliches, but this is getting insane. Think about how annoyed you get hearing them once a week. Now imagine being a player or assistant and hearing it everyday. It loses its affect, gets annoying and can even come off as disingenuous. Hey, maybe Lyle is different off camera.

I think he's genuinely frustrated because the "infallible" system has been exposed, and he hasnt really come to grips with it.

Has anyone else picked up on this vibe during his press conference ? In last 2-3 weeks his intensity has been down. Looks a lot uninterested and lot less angry at press. Even when his team was winning early on, he had that intensity.
Is it that with losses, he has come to terms with a 9-3 season ? Or does anyone else have a feeling that Butch will be looking elsehwere after this season ?
If he goes 9-3 & gets to SEC CG , a lot of teams would be happy to get pick him up. There are a lot of 10-win happy good programs out there. Miami picked Mark Richt to get back to 10 wins.
I can see few programs shuffling coaches and Butch ending up at a ACC or Big 12 type programs.

I picked up that vibe. But, it was more like a long suffering man finally getting a painful boil on his butt lanced. Now he can concentrate on developing his football team. Must be a great relief.

Butch has more stress on him than we can imagine. We at Volnation just get to complain to each other and post knee-jerk reactions to the last game. Butch has to hear it from every side including the Big Money donors constantly pressuring him about wins (beating the Gators, Dawgs, and Bama). I think Butch is worn down and ready for the off-season. Oh wait this is not the NFL there is no off-season in college football. There is only The two seasons, football and recruiting season.

The man get's paid a ridiculous amount of money, 4.1 mil a year to deal with said stress. For $11,647.72 a day salary I think he can handle it lol. His success will be judged in wins and losses, nothing else matters.

:lolabove:Are you kidding me!!! Have you seen the contracts UT gives and what you have to do to get an extension. Hell, if Dooley would have beaten Lsu and Nc his first year, we would be paying his buyout for another 5 years.
I've read on here that every assistant coach and CBJ do get paid a bonus for making it to the SECCG and the fiqure increases if they win and are SEC Champions. Haven't read anything about the national title playoffs.

HAHAHA! WOW ! What a joke of a post. Its like a preacher who preaches a sermon and there are those who hear an entirely different sermon then the majority of the congregation. You know, those who have got to find something to gripe about. You hear what you want to hear according to the attitude and mind set you bring. This shows us the mind set you have when he says anything. You left off IMO that would have been better than you acting like you really know everything as fact.

I'll get you in touch with him as his counselor and inform him of his many failings and maybe, just maybe, he can salvage what's left of his pathetic life...just maybe...BUT...your analysis is very Freudian... or maybe Fraud-ian...just thought that up...actually it sounds like the overthinking of life my wife subscribes to on occasions and comes back a few days later apologizing for her momentary insanity...just messing with you...I believe YOU believe it so carry on...MY ACHING BACK!!! His cliché ridden press conferences are Public Relations 101 for highly visible figures (see politics, sports, etc) these days....play it close to the vest and never let them see you sweat...trust me...I've frock licked in this pool for years now...

While I would like to agree with the B portion of your statement history proves otherwise...actually wins and loses oft times has NOTHING to do with judging ones successes...

The money does nothing to alleviate the stress.

I get the same feeling as you that there is still discontent in this program. And not only with the players. I think it extends to the coaching staff. It is like they are just trying to make it to the end of the season. Even if Butch stays, I suspect that you are going to see several players and coaches leave (some because they are asked, but others on their own).

Maybe Butch doesn't know how to manage people. Some of his decisions indicate that he plays favorites. If so, that is the surest way to create unhappiness within an organization.

I like how Butch looks uninterested during a presser (which can you really blame him for that? they're all pretty much the same.. same dumb questions, same answers.. heck even Butch is getting tired of his own coach speak lol) and then suddenly he doesn't care about the team or program and wants to jump ship. I mean cmon

Pretty pathetic for a group of adults to tell kids that have poured their hearts and souls into this program for the last 3/4 year to get it turned around that their efforts are a disappointment.
Everybody could use a chill pill IMO. The tirades on the sidelines by CBJ against UK were out of line....cussed Vickers out for unsportsmanlike penalty...went off on Bynum because UT had to use T/O because Bynum didn't get on the field on xtra point play. Several more times the camera caught him shaking his head in anger. The reason i'm saying this is because earlier in the season when UT made a mistake, turnover for example, CBJ could be seen clapping his hands and offering encouragement especially when Dobbs would make a mistake. We had a pretty good TE recruit decommit shortly after the UK win and I was thinking the two may be tied together. I just think CBJ needs to tone it down when the world's watching. There's a proper time and place for his antics and I'm not sure he's even getting through to the players in the 1st place. One thing I am certain about and I am looking past Mizzou is that Vandy is gonna be up for us. I could care less about records, polls, and picks,etc.....if UT plays flat, undisciplined, ball in Nashville this season is a failure. It's already below expectations for many of us so I can only imagine the emotions that would surround Vol Nation if we have another let down this season. Vandy is an up and down, on and off team so UT should be on guard. These unexpected line-up changes aren't easy to immediately adapt to because as soon as you think you have one thing fixed,up pops another. I can see that being over-whelming particularly when it occurs to the extent it has at UT this year. It's time for our coach to show some resilience in a composed manner.:twocents:

I'm confused. Does he need to tone it down and show more composure or is he disengaged and uninterested like the OP says?

Kids are coached in different manners. Seems most of the players ( that are willing to work hard) love Butch. And most will appreciate the hard coaching. CBJ is not the only coach that does that. I would say that most successful coaches do. In the beginning of the season you clap and encourage and the tone changes if you continue to make stupid mistakes, and Vickers penalty was a stupid mistake. Obviously it was effective as Vickers had a pretty good game afterward.

The TE decommitt, didnt we just sign another TE and the writing was on the wall for the kid. From what I hear (and I have no inside information btw) this kid knew his chances of playing here were not good.

As for me, I hope they play well, but as long as they win, it doesnt matter. Personally the only thing I want to see is Josh Dobbs, Barnett and co walk away from here knowing they turned the program around and to me, a trip to the SECCG (regardless of how they get there) does that.

To increase his interest and enthusiasm, maybe the AD can send him a few hundred thousand in christmas spending money.

Is Butch Jones just emotionally worn down and his ego bruised? Good question, but hasn't he done about as good as one could expect him to do at Tennessee?

I have a feeling it may be prudent to wait until after the Missouri and Vandy games to celebrate the season:good!:
