Butch Jones

In Y3, Butch was extremely competitive in losses to UF, Bama, and OU losing (choking) all 3 late.

In Y3, Pruitt lost 7 games by double digits including by 27 to UK at home and to an Arky team that had lost 20 straight league games entering the season
They both lost to a mediocre Arkansas squad, though.

What was more frustrating, watching Jones run RPO plays with Worley when everyone and their mom knew that the QB wasn’t going to keep the ball or watching Pruitt trot out JG time and time again when everyone and their mom knew that he would fold with a little pressure?
Worley kept the ball more times than JG rose the occasion, so I gotta say JG.

Jones had a couple of solid seasons in 2015 & 2016. Dobbs was a highlight machine. Without him the excitement wouldn’t have been the same and Jones would have probably been canned in 2016. His offensive strategy going into year five was a head scratcher. I never understood why Jones gave scholarships to Dormady and JG. Neither QB had wheels that his zone read offense required. The majority of the OL he signed weren’t SEC caliber. OP, yes CBJ’s teams would beat down Pruitt’s teams but a soggy bowl of cornflakes can outcoach JP. The hiring of JP is just further evidence that UT is still a sh!tshow.

There's nothing more pathetic than people trying to re-imagine that Butch Jones and / or Derek Dooley were better coaches than they were to put Pruitt down.

You can dislike Pruitt w/o convincing yourself that Butch Jones was OK. He was terrible. He was 0-8 in the SEC in his final year. And the only reason he went 9-4 in '15 and '16 was because of Dobbs and Kamara (who he severely under-utilized). And those 2 teams had playoff-level talent and Butch couldn't even win the East with them. Without Dobbs, Butch has a losing record every season. And let's not even mention the fact that both Dooley and Butch did a lot of long-term harm to the program; Dooley in terms of his terrible recruiting that left the roster depleted. Butch by gutting the S&C program and doing terrible talent evaluation, so that some of his highly-rated recruiting classes were filled with busts.

Is Pruitt good enough to win at Tennessee? I don't know, but he's definitely better than Butch and Dooley.

Anyone that know me knows I hated the Jones hire and hated his offense (pretend zone read, everything is a slow developing dive offense).

So this is much more a criticism of Pruitt than a compliment to Jones.

Pruitt needs to win 14 games next season to match Butch's win total through 4 seasons.

True, but how about Y4 without JD to bail him out on O and Barnett on D.

Say what you want, but I just watched UT highlights from 2013-2017 on YouTube, and my takeaway was that any one of Butch’s Vol teams would beat this current team by 4 TDs

My other takeaway was that Dobbs might be one of the best QBs we’ve had since Manning. I should’ve appreciated him more.

Thoughts?
Lyle is still a " Richard" with ears.

If Pruitt had Dobbs, he probably has a much different record. We’re going to have to all accept the fact that this is a QB driven league. We can talk all we want about the trenches/special teams/field position/blah blah, but who is about to play in the playoffs?

Mac Jones
Ian Book
Trevor Lawrence
Justin Fields

Georgia’s in if they play JT Daniels all year. Who is right on the outside? Kellen Mond. Who won it last year? Joe Burrow.

If your QB is a stud, you win. If your QB is not a stud, you don’t win.

Such a ridiculous take...

Put any of those QBs on the Vols Roster and we would at best have won 3 more games.

We literally got beaten by multiple tds in 7 games...7 games...let that sink in. No QB is going to make that big of a difference.

I know everyone likes to say "Dobbs bailed him out" but who recruited Dobbs (just a 3 star out of high school)? Did we watch Dobbs improve over his career here? Yep. So we can keep spouting out the narrative it was all Dobbs, but he was at least somewhat developed. We have had 3 elite 11 QBs on campus under Pruitt and they haven't done spit since they've been here.

It's not close. Butch is better than Pruitt. Would Butch take us to the promised land? Nope. Did that 17 team tank after the Georgia beat down? Yes, similar to back half of Fulmers last year. But over the course of his 5 years here, Butch had the Vols looking way better than Pruitt ever has. Ever.

And player development, remember how we were all mad about that? Man, it's so much worse now. Not a single player improved this year. Not one.

Butch was an average coach who would tighten up in the 4th when the game was close. Pruitt is trash. I'll take Butch all day long and twice on Sunday.

But I pray whoever our next coach is will be the guy to get us where we need to be.
Yourr take is dead-on accurate but the problem with it for so many here is all the hatred they spewed regarding CBJ. To agree that you are correct is to admit that not only were they wrong they obviously know very little about the game.

Which is why the narrative for many now is Dobbs vs JG. One of those guys was a 3 star that was developed. The other was the highest rated dual threat in the nation who not only wasnt developed, he was better as a freshamn under a different coaching staff...

If you remember, Butch delayed playing Dobbs (the best QB on the roster) because he felt Dobbs didn't show a great sense of urgency in practice. Butch also under utilized Kamara.

That’s not hard to do. This team is trash

As much as I hate to put down kids that give their all, JG is the common denominator among all of those staffs. Everyone missed on JG. If you look at his high school stats (and his supporters love to use stats as their fall back) he had no business being ranked as highly as he was . He definitely was not a dual threat. Ever. Josh Dobbs was the one QB that Butch got right that was the right fit for his offense. Nothing else made sense, but Dobbs did.

For JG, he’s had Chaney, he’s worked with George Whitfield every summer. It’s not like he hasn’t had opportunities to improve, but he’s always looked the same.

What got Butch is the same thing that’s going to end up getting Pruitt: hubris. Both refuse to listen to assistants who know more than they do about certain positions/game situations. Butch was a decent recruiter, bad developer. Pruitt is basically the same. The major difference: Butch at least knew how to run a program, Pruitt is learning on the job. The former wasn’t great at it, the latter isn’t at the right place to do it—that’s what FCS and/or non power 5 programs are for.
