Say what you want, but I just watched UT highlights from 2013-2017 on YouTube, and my takeaway was that any one of Butch’s Vol teams would beat this current team by 4 TDs

My other takeaway was that Dobbs might be one of the best QBs we’ve had since Manning. I should’ve appreciated him more.

2017 team was loaded with talent, any decent coach would have easily taken the east that year. I think we all wish we still had dobbs

No question about it. He was way too conservative. And in the end it costs him his chance to be a head coach. Also, he wants a great an developer which all great head coaches are. But as far as motivating a tram amd having and organized game plan going in he was way better than Pruitt. This team was the worst tn team I can ever remember. And constantly putting JG out there the last 3 season without ever really even having a qb competition leading into the season will forever be the most bizarre display of stupidity I ever seen from a head coach in any sport.

Jones was 0-8 in the SEC his last year. He was every bit as bad as Pruitt, maybe worse, but had Dobbs to bail him out time and again.

Cant argue that. Pruitt looks just plain lost at times. Butch had some talented guys through them years.

Those Dobb's teams would beat any Pruitt team like a rented mule. Not even remotely close.

At least Butch Jones had the competence to play Josh Dobbs. If Pruitt was in charge while Josh Dobbs was here, he would've been benched because he didn't practice well enough.

Dobbs is a smart guy. If he persues a coaching career after the NFL, maybe he can come back and be UT's head coach sometime down the road.

Dobbs is hands down the best playmaker we have had since Manning, not just Qb.

I know everyone likes to say "Dobbs bailed him out" but who recruited Dobbs (just a 3 star out of high school)? Did we watch Dobbs improve over his career here? Yep. So we can keep spouting out the narrative it was all Dobbs, but he was at least somewhat developed. We have had 3 elite 11 QBs on campus under Pruitt and they haven't done spit since they've been here.

It's not close. Butch is better than Pruitt. Would Butch take us to the promised land? Nope. Did that 17 team tank after the Georgia beat down? Yes, similar to back half of Fulmers last year. But over the course of his 5 years here, Butch had the Vols looking way better than Pruitt ever has. Ever.

And player development, remember how we were all mad about that? Man, it's so much worse now. Not a single player improved this year. Not one.

Butch was an average coach who would tighten up in the 4th when the game was close. Pruitt is trash. I'll take Butch all day long and twice on Sunday.

But I pray whoever our next coach is will be the guy to get us where we need to be.

The funny thing is, that’s EXACTLY why it took well into his Sophomore year for Dobbs to secure the starting job.

If Pruitt had Dobbs, he probably has a much different record. We’re going to have to all accept the fact that this is a QB driven league. We can talk all we want about the trenches/special teams/field position/blah blah, but who is about to play in the playoffs?

Pretty obvious. Butch was a FAR better and more experienced HC. Butch was better at making adjustments. Butch made the Nashville area a recruiting priority. Butch developed the QB position better.

We haven't had a serious passer at QB since Bray. Dobbs was erratic throwing the ball but punished defenses with his feet. He carried the offense despite poor play calling, busted plays/poor blocking.

In Y3, Butch was extremely competitive in losses to UF, Bama, and OU losing (choking) all 3 late.

In Y3, Pruitt lost 7 games by double digits including by 27 to UK at home and to an Arky team that had lost 20 straight league games entering the season

Didn’t Butch pass on Trevor Lawrence due to him not fitting his system? Lawrence grew up a TN fan and wanted to sign with the Vols. Without Dobbs, Jones would not have lasted as long as he did in Knoxville.

Regarding the running backs, he also kept Kamara on the bench in favor of Hurd.
