For as long as I can remember, and that is a while, I have been all Vol even before there was the phrase 24/7/365. (I think that 365 is right, I saw a thread . . .)
There was a time back in the recent past when I was about as downcast as I have ever been. Not just because of the football team -- I could rationalize somewhat a down cycle since I had been through the one back in the 1970's -- but my fear was irrelevance and never being able to rebuild. The football program and even other sports were unable to be competitive because of money issues and a good bit of that due to the University taking excess contributions from the football program, not being as successful with recruiting of the higher caliber of athlete, a precipitous slide toward second tier.
There are a couple of historic programs that I am thinking are headed that way and I didn't want Tennessee to be one of them. No need to call them out here. But let's use a long ago example - Army who was a huge national power 70 years ago whose time has now passed and gone. That was my fear.
Since Dave Hart's arrival (and I will give him huge credit for turning the financial side around) and then the hiring of Butch Jones, things have turned around dramatically. So I watched with a smile as the momentum grew out of an abyss even during Team 117's 5-7 year, the uga game came oh so close and I was on Orange Cloud 9 when Michael Palardy's kick when through the uprights. And then big momentum with Team 118 and the program momentum changer at uscjr. And being in Jacksonville for the TaxSlayer Bowl was great fun.
Over the past few years, the Vols have lost a notch on the all-time winningest football teams list. For me, that is the ultimate benchmark -- winning enough games over a several decades to move win by win closer to #8 Penn State (849 to 811) and the two tied at #6 (bama and Oklahoma at 850) and keep ahead of #10 USC (811 to 805). If that were to come to pass it would no doubt mean that the Vols were in contention for the SEC championship year in an year out and would have won several SEC championships and another national championship or two.
I do believe we are headed in the right direction. I think things are on the right track. I like the new enthusiasm, the One Tennessee, the swagger, and the flash. We live in the media age and it appears the Vols are making the most of it.
I give Butch Jones credit for being the most relentless, hard working guy in football. He gets my highest praise for what he has done to date. I do believe that Orange storm is coming and so is the true test. On top of recruiting, recruiting, recruiting, the next phase of Butch's program needs to be winning, winning, winning.
GBO!!
