Butch Jones would be a good hire for us

Jury is still out. Recruiting is encouraging but we need to see it on the field.

You'll see it when he's not down to one QB on roster who is the 3rd stringer and played bad.

Things were going well before Worley went down. Shame we will never know how things would've went (I can guarantee a Vandy win).

We are most teenage fans looking for a bandwagon... We want Gruden...he's magical! I play on playstation, I know. In fact, i know of a guy that told me Gruden hired Jones to recruit and settle things down..then the big playstation splash announcement.

I'll take the latter in these future matchups:
Butch Jones vs...
-Steve Spurrier
-Nick Saban
-Les Miles
-Will Muschamp
-Dan Mullen
-Chip Kelly (next season)
-Bob Stoops (next two seasons)

*On a positive note, he has beaten James Franklin

:ermm:

Godfatha gets it.

We have a good coach. The question is, will he be better than all the other coaches in this league? I doubt it. I hope so, but i doubt it. I don't think Jones has what it takes to win championships. The primary reason is his unwillingness to make any coaching changes.

You came to that conclusion after one season, with 3 injured QB's, and a roster with virtually none of his own players???

Good analysis. :banghead2::banghead2::banghead2:

It's not like he was dominant at his other stops. And if you know a dam* thing about football, it's a fairly sane doubt to have at this point. So bang your head all you want, but you might want to save some for our 8 win average over the next 5 years.

At this point, an 8 win season sounds like heaven to me.

4 championships in 6 years seems somewhat dominant to me. Yes, different situations, but he proved to be among the best of his peers.

Who knows if he's on the same level as the current SEC top coaches, but 2 things I feel confident in:

1. He's ten times the coach Dooley was.
2. He'll need time to change the loser culture remaining from the Dooley era and bring in real SEC talent before his true potential can be assessed.

Dooley with this years team wins 2, maybe 3 games max.
Saban with this years team would have won no more than Butch did, IMO. Saban's first year at Bama was 6-6 with a much better roster and easier schedule, even losing to Louisana Monroe.

Next year will be tough as well because most of our starters will be first year starters, a lot of freshmen will be in the 2 deep, and it's another brutal schedule. So we'll have to be patient until 2015 before we can form a fair judgement of Butch. JMO.

How could you possibly know how willing he would be to make coaching changes? If you mean that he is unwilling to hang someone for us not winning a national championship (or fill in any other accolade that you think we should have achieved) this year, then I am glad that he won't do that.

No matter what kind of working situation you are in...if you feel that your leader is willing to throw you under the bus at a moment's notice, then you won't be able to perform well. If you feel that your leader has complete confidence in you, you are 100 X more likely to be successful. It is basic management 101. If you think he should have canned someone whose family was willing to pick up and move to be here, then you are crazy. All the rest of his coaching staff would have started performing poorly because of fear.

So we should just get rid of this staff after one year? If we hired another staff and they didn't work out the first year, do we fire all of them too? What do you think has gotten us in the situation we are in now? How about MASSIVE COACHING CHANGES?

First of all, you are ten times the coach Dooley was. Second, I think you should carefully look over what Saban did his first year at Bama. Yes, he lost to LA Monroe. Everyone points to that and it was a bad loss. But if you consider the whole season, I think it was impressive and I don't think season one for CBJ compares.

These are fair points. But they miss my point. I'm not saying he should fire a coach on a moment's notice etc. Let me ask you, do you think we have the "best coaching staff in America"? Do you think it's the best in the SEC? Do you think it's likely that a rising star head coach just happened to have a staff at Central Michigan consisting of a bunch of rising stars? The answer to these questions is an easy and obvious, No.

Do you think we should have the "best coaching staff in America"? Do you think a rising star head coach should have to do due diligence and go and find coaches who belong in big time SEC football?

By no means. We should get rid of underperforming coaches and go get the best.

Well now, it's sure funny how our own words comes back to bite us in the (_)_), LOL!

My own words prove how dumb I was to fall in line with the masses here on VN at the time, LOL!

As to recruiting...Please pass the B-B-Q sauce for my crow sandwich.

Legacy class or not I don't believe there's 1 Vol fan in the world that would have believed that bUTch and his staff could bring in the commits we have right now and I doubt that many would believe he could get a class 1/2 this good so the LOL is on all of us on his staffs recruiting abilities.

Changing the mindset and culture of expecting and accepting losses sometimes takes several years because we all can adjust and accept bad things and then they become the normal and what we expect.

I did see some culture changes this season and I did NOT see our team flatout quitting like they did under CDD and that's a very positive change.

I saw bUTch go head to head with the mind games played by the old ball coach and in that case Spurrier lost both the mind games and the football game so that showed some knowledge and moxie and I loved that.

I saw bUTch and his staff prove they have the courage to go for it on many 4th downs and to try their best to WIN a game with a fake kick and a pass that was thrown a bit short and failed but he DID have the courage to go for it and the foresight to put in plays and practice them for a situation like that and if that pass was completed then bUTch would be a hero now and we'd be going to a bowl game.

I saw UGa come within a few short inches of Losing to our Vols and I saw Vandy get lucky with a bad timed block in the back to save them from Losing to our Vols.

Winning just 1 of those 2 games would have us in a bowl game right now but good luck is something Tennessee hasn't had any of since 1998 when we beat Arkansas and then went all the way.

I see improvements and I now believe that as our talent and depth levels go back up we'll see alot of good things and alot more Wins over the next few years IF bUTch and staff can keep recruiting every year like he has this year.

If my butt is a little sore it's because my own words in this thread came back around to bite me in my butt, LMAO!!!

#BrickbyBrick...VFL...GBO!!!

I understand what you are saying, but let's not forget that we played 5 of the top 10 teams. I may be wrong because I haven't looked, but I'm fairly certain Saban didn't play 50% of the top 10 teams his first season.
