Butch Jones Will Never Be an Elite Coach

Didn't read it. Not because it's long, but because from your subject line I can already tell you don't know wtf you're talking about.

But, hey. I hope it was a cathartic experience for you.

I don't necessarily agree 100% with every point the OP made, he does make a compelling argument and is spot on with some of those points.

I've always felt we are about an 8-4 team this season. I did not have the OU game penciled as a win; I felt the game was a coin flip. But having so much momentum with a huge lead and then losing the way we did makes me sick. Reading all of Stoops' comments and OU's trash talk leading up to the game and watching them celebrate on our field was gut wrenching.

Personally, I have been a huge CBJ supporter, but Saturday's loss was purely due to coaching incompetence. You cannot continue to ignore the multitude of poor decisions and embarrassing losses he is piling up. I am on the fence right now, leaning away from him. If he sh*ts the bed again this year and we take a bad loss that should have been a win, I don't know that I'll ever be able to be in his corner again. Maybe, with time, but I'm just not feeling it right now...

Nothing in my post indicated that was "the reason for the loss"..i guess i should clarify the man in the picture is George Quarles.

Our first half field goal decision didn't beat us, our second half offensive "strategy" did.

Many, myself included, believe the two are related but I'm not going to focus on it. There's an awful lot of good to see in the work that Butch is doing and with our recent football history that's really encouraging.

What I am going to do is have this little nagging thing about wondering if CBJ can run w/ the big dogs until he shows me he can.

I think I'm still gun shy about conservative game play from CPF. However, my expectations for this yr are 8-4 we are certainly in a position to do that. As long as we continue to improve as we have Butch has all my support. The cliche coach speak needs some variety though.

8) Butch Jones cheap slogans and coach speak might be helpful for the team (although I doubt it), perhaps motivational (again, I doubt it), but its empty words for the fanbase now. And, please, for the love of Saint Pete, quit using youth as an excuse! Quit telling us it's a process -- even if it is. Fans should not be expected to snap and clear pivotal losses because of an overly conservative scheme after building a lead. It's unacceptable and it will be remembered for the rest of his career, no matter how long or short that career turns out to be. The 2014 UF game and the 2015 OK game will not be cleared from our memory, just like the 2001 SEC championship, 1999 Arkansas, 1996 Memphis games, 2001 UGA game (pooch kick anyone?) will never be forgotten by fans who witnessed them, nor the multiple loses to UF during Fulmer's best years. The difference with Fulmer's first 7-8 years is he had enough big wins to accept some of his biggest failures (how UT played against UF was probably his biggest failure, which is why the 1998 and 2001 victories against Florida rank up at the top of Fulmer's biggest wins in his coaching career).

9) Butch Jones is a salesman. He's not a coach. Not yet at least. I'm hoping he can improve but after watching the first few minutes of his presser today I am convinced he will not improve. Why? Because he refuses to recognize and change his biggest flaws. Most VN fans talk about how he finally accepted responsibility (lol) for the OK loss, as though now everything is okay again. What I heard was a coach that said we were one play away from a victory. That's all I needed to hear to know this guy doesn't get it. He doesn't get that the game should have never came down to one play after building a 17-0 lead (which should have been 21-0 bc that field goal from the half yard line was a pitiful, gutless call at home with our defense). He has justified his coaching decisions in his mind. We were close to winning against Oklahoma and just needed one more break or one more play and all would have been fine, he thinks. For him, that is enough. That is why things won't improve with him in this regard. We will continue going into excessively conservative mode against teams when we build a lead.....and we will continue losing these games when talent is equal and there is enough clock for the opponent to make up a deficit. And in the SEC you can bet that teams will out-talent us or be on par 3 or 4 times (if not more) a year, every year.

these are my biggest concerns! No excuse for OK game we have the superior talent across the board. I have not figured does Coach D have too many toys and cant figure it out? B Jones holding him back, it is not the Oline, QB, Backs you cant give a young team momentum and have them to put the brakes on in an emotional game! stay on the gas. have some passion for your kids, fans, boosters show us you love UT by beating the heck out of a team we are not per the medial picked to win..

Give UT a win besides Bowling Green, West Carolina, North Texas...We as fans want wins against the GA, Fl, Miss., SC (we beat them guys woo hoo) give us the passion games! give the fan base something not to be negative about and the stadium/fan base will not be disrespected on UT turf!

There is more risk of potential recruits being turned off by reading your post than there is by Butch's coaching.

If you are that disillusioned by the coaching please go find another team or coach to follow.

shorter version--- we are getting tired of the coach speak and want to see results. As long as he keeps his same football mentality and IQ, along with keeping the same staff, he will never be an elite coach no matter how good he recruits.... get ready for 8 wins per year max and a half ass bowl every year boys and girls....

Didn't read it. Check out every other "elite" coaches resume. They struggled starting out.

Chuck Noll (one of the greatest NFL coaches of all time):

First season: 1-13
Second: 5-9
Third: 6-8....
Fourth: 11-3

Now, I know it's the NFL, but I use Chuck Noll because he had a slow turnaround that was centered around drafting amazing talent. Once that talent developed, his defense was so powerful the pass interference rule was added in the late 70s because Steelers DBs were too overpowered for the game.

OP, you have a resume? I know a certain orange clad school looking for an AD that would appreciate your breakdown from what you see on TV and your "gut feelings". You'd be great a hiring, do you work in HR?

I can't wait until Butch proves you wrong.

Yeah I think Florida will need another coach soon.

Delete this post. Create a website called negavolnation.com for all you worrisome premature analyst who think you know it all. As I predicted before season started, we will be 8-4 or 9-3 at best and you should be happy with that. Next year, we will be 10 wins or better. Enjoy the season and focus on the positives. Go Vols! Can't spell bUTch without UT!

I can say the same thing in less words....Butch Sucks! I think we all agree on that. :dance2:

I didn't agree with some of the play calling & maybe someone who is not present at practices(being away ten years) is more qualified to choose the starters on game day; hell, I didn't even agree with some of Doug Dickey's play calling in 1967 or the last play of 1969, but I did recognize improvement from season to season !!! The difference in East Tennessee State's loss to a lower Division III Maryville College team wasn't as much talent & coaching as it was that ETSU(restarting it's program after several years without football) had all freshman 18 & 19 year old Scholarship players against mostly upperclassmen 20-23 year old Non-Scholarship players, different recruiting
levels, but still the Grown Men beat the Raw Talented Boys !!! The Vols coaching staff may face the dilemma of making a choice of Raw Talent vs Experience in several of their remaining games with 45 underclassmen possibly seeing substantial playing time this season !!! I think every coach evolves with experience & I like the chances of Butch Jones evolving into a KEEPER better than the alternative of waiting for Texas to fall on their face & hiring our 1st choice before Butch, Charlie Strong !!! COME whiners BUTCH OR CHARLIE or maybe take ole BRET away from Arkansas ????????? Butch, Looking better ????????

To be an elite coach, CBJ needs to learn to manage: (1) injuries, especially the preseason variety; (2) attrition, this may be a personality issue and results in lack of depth; and (3) game day decisions, this may be an instinct or an intelligence issue. Not sure if he can improve on all 3 fronts.
