Butch Jones Will Never Be an Elite Coach

Great post, unfortunately too many people drink the Kool-Aid and can't handle the truth.

Like the "truth" of not throwing the ball to North in the end zone against BGSU? Help me understand this "truth", did CBJ get into his brain and force Dobbs not to throw it to North or was the play titled "don't throw it to North at all costs, slant right"? I also like the drivel on "little white lies" haha.

Op I completely agree. You said it very well. Over the offseason I created several "why doesn't butch get criticized for the ultra conservative" threads and got bashed for it. I too have always given butch credit for the work ethic and recruiting...but it's more important to have a coach that can make good decisions on game day than anything else. Look at Michigan state, or Oregon. Those programs don't bring in top tier talent. But either team would kill us. Last week I started a thread with the title "under butch" which much less eloquently outlined what you're thread said and virtually every response was negative. The premise was we never put our foot on an opponents throat.
This may seem harsh but I just don't know that butch is that intelligent. He has no concept of momentum or psychology. Which are very important elements of the game.

Of course you agree with him:snoring:

Of course Bynum looked "great" against Iowa, they are terrible and are slow. I am sure Jumper would have looked like the next Mean Joe Green as well but Oklahoma is not Iowa. Maybe Bynum is injured? Maybe he doesn't know the schemes? Maybe he has a crappy attitude? You are making wild assumptions based off of no information.

Taking responsibility for failure is secondary to doing a better job of avoiding it. I'd rather the coaches be proactive than reactive. The Swamp would be an excellent place to start.

Wow! how quickly we throw the coaching staff under the bus, the negavols are always looking for an opportunity to vent on this site....most everyone before the season on this site pretty much thought UT would have 2-4 losses. Ok, we have one after two games, BFD, this is still a young team the lead for most of the game and let it slip, I've seen bigger teams almost lose this past weekend and some did. I think UT proved more, that the VOLS are working themselves back, If I was OU and the Fans, I would be worried. There is no way they win the Big 12, Mayfield with the help of some untimely penalties and two very bad calls by the refs, they pulled a win out of their a$$.

Hey man, it's simple. When you spout for 3 years about best coaching staff, loading up bricks, and changing the culture, don't whine when people expect you to win when up 17 on your field. Part if changing the culture is creating expectation of winning. You can't preach ctire change for 3 years and then tell fans to back off when they expect it. Part if changing the culture of program is having expectations of wins, especially when your fans pack the place and you are up 17-0 at home. This is not rocket science. Its not analytics either.

Last week's game was by far the most gut wrenching loss i've seen maybe ever. That's in over twenty years of watching. I am highly disappointed with our offensive strategy/play calling/execution especially in the second half. I feel like as a whole Butch's teams continue to make awful strategical decisions. So i what I'm saying is i agree with a lot of what you say here, but I think he will learn to win. He'll learn to make those better calls and he will do what it takes as far as hiring/firing our coaches to make it happen. He's definitely an awesome spokesman for the program and has done an amazing job in the way of recruiting and just hyping up the program. He has us on the way to something good, but he has a long way to go as far as game day coaching. But he will get better, that man wants it and i'm all about that 100% positivity **** it works

Butch is in his 9th year as a head coach. He's been a head coach for nearly a decade and he's still learning on the job? And not just learning in general, but learning how to do the ONE thing he's hired to do?

Let me ask this. If we was to march back form 14 down to tie and still loose in double OT would the reaction be the same?

Exactly. We need W's. Not character, not player development.

If CBJ was to be fired who in the hell would come in and take this job? This loss to Ok hurt but they played their guts out. We should all be proud of that.

I'm as honest and critical, when warranted, as the next fan, but you can't have any skin left to slit on your wrists after that post...Good friggin' grief!!

Butch's success as a coach will be determined by how well he can live up to his original promise to give us the BEST staff in the country.
If he isn't realizing what he hasn't got by now, he won't even be a mediocre coach in the long run.

He moved even closer to best staff in the country by hiring the women's synchronized swimming coach away from Michigan and making him OC.

Maybe if North wears a one piece bathing suit and a flowery swim cap the OC will notice him and try to get the ball in his hands?

And btw OP, great post!

It's true. This may test the patience of Job but we have no choice but to show it. We can't take on another buyout and coaching search that would lead to even more player attrition especially when there is no guarantee that we could do better than Jones. Support the team, have a good time at the tailgates and appreciate the fact that we are showing at least a little improvement as a team.

I now know what it must feel like to smack your big thumb with a hammer; then, out of curiousity reach over with same hammer and beat the hell out of your other thumb.

For the sake of mankind, please tell me all of you aren't this negative in real life.

Nice post OP.....N O T !!!! ... when Butch has a roster full of his own players and does not have to rely on walk ons or freshmen get back to me, till then dude you should switch from tighty whiteys to boxers because you seem a little uptight. We came off worse than probation considering what Dooley left, Butch has 2 recruiting classes in place. We are getting better (argue that point Einstein), not like Butch had a stacked roster. You need to chill... We will get there, most of us see the big picture, and still have faith. Dadgum,

It's a sad day that we live in, everybody wants and expects immediate results. No one wants to endure the growing pains that it takes to climb out of the gutter. How quickly we have forgotten how low the program fell. I enjoy the energy that Butch brings and his old school mentality mixed with new school innovative processes, i.e. sleep monitoring etc. I think Butch is trying everything he can to succeed and will find a way to put it all together. Sorry that I'm not sorry that the truth offends you; youth is a legitamite concern with our team and Butch has every right to mention it. Every thing that he does has a purpose and more often than not he is recruiting, even if it is subtle. Where you think recruits might get turned off by his use of players, I think recruits see that and say, hey I have a chance to come in and be the guy bc no one is stepping up and standing out. Also, let's be clear about one thing, this is not a government position or a publicly traded company and you do not have the right to unlimited access to information that you desire. You may not agree with Butch controlling the information that makes it out and you can be mad as hell about it but that doesn't make your opinion correct or even valid. We get it, you don't think he will be elite. You made the exact same point 15 times and just spun it a different way. For the tl:dr crowd, read the title and there is your synopsis. You have your opinion and I have mine, both of them are inconsequential and only time will tell the true story. However, reading your post, whether right or wrong, I have gathered that you had early success in your writing career and are biased toward the media and the access that "should" be afforded to them and it drives you crazy that Butch has limited that. You also come across as a spoiled brat who is used to getting everything that he wants and who belittles anyone for having a differing opinion than your own. I agree with some of your points but we can't keep calling for coaches heads when they don't win immediately. Take a step back and look at the big picture, we are trending in the right direction. Butch's philosophies are on point, you start with a foundation and build a culture. When we finally have seniors that he has actually recruited and have been in the program and around the culture long enough, the tough wins will come. Saturday was tough. I am still so upset that we lost that game. However, I see the steps Butch is taking and we will get there. We were just a few plays away from winning that game against a team that is better than they were last year when they stomped us. There is no better teacher than experience and almost all of our players are lacking in this area. Stick with us; don't abandon ship. The team needs all of our passionate fans to have their backs, especially right now. No one feels this loss more than they do and no recruit wants to play for a team whose fan base is irrational and bipolar. Give the man the chance and time to succeed and I believe you will be surprised. Most importantly, give these players the support they deserve, even if you don't agree with the coach, these players still go out and bleed for this school, for this state, and for this fanbase. GBO!!

I get it . GUTLESS that is the one thing CBJ seems to be . NO I take that back but he does coach scared in big games . I think the players have the killer instinct but the coach doesn't.
