Butch Jones should have been given another year to turn things around. Change my mind.

He and Fulmer with exact same records their last 4 years.
Did you watch during the BJ era? If you did you must have been looking for crazy responses or bored out of your mind. I was ecstatic when he was finally let go. (Should have been shot out of the state from a cannon)

To be clear to everyone (especially OP), Butch wasn’t fired for the 2017 season. Butch was fired for the 2016 season.

Had he accomplished what any competent coach could have accomplished with that team, or AT THE VERY LEAST won us an SEC East title, 2017 would not have turned into a “show me something” year. The world could have understood that the key players to the 2016 team were now in the NFL making millions and 2017 was going to have to be a rebuilding year.

2016 was a team with playoff-level talent, and all Butch could get from them was 8 regular season wins and a loss to Derek Mason’s Vandy. Butch backed himself into a corner and was going to have to have a miracle season in 2017 as a result.

Is this to get us rowled up? He lost me when he stopped taking ownership. He promised championships and then back tracked with slogans. Not sure at all what he was thinking with regards to S&C, but he clearly needed to learn more in that department. He made a great hire in Bajakian, then Debord surprised a lot of people, but then failed with Scott. He should have played Hurd where he wanted to be played especially with Kamara on board. I think his antics lost the support of his coaches and players, his list of coaches that would play for him on O was as short as Bajakian and Debord, so there was no new coaching talent interested and Shoop could do nothing on D without a good S&D coach.

Butch could not hold this program together, but I respect what he did the first four years of football. We were a fumble through the end zone by Pig away from defeating Georgia twice. The miracle went our way the second time. We went to three bowls and I think we slaughtered NW who was highly ranked in one of them and finished in the top 25 two years in a row. He beat some other ranked teams including Florida, and had us on the map by almost beating Oklahoma AND Bama. He recruited a ton of talent and frankly made it fun to watch TN again. People were even posting Butch as the General photos.

That said he lost what he built overnight. He was not a good in-game coach which lost us some last minute chances with both SC and Vandy. Incredible considering what happened at the Georgia game. Cinci fans warned us that he was a salesman and it worked until he had to put together something that took him many years to build and those were all relationships with people that knew too much that he did not.

That said, I think what we have now is better on all fronts. Challenge is Pruitt has more competition than Butch did. I look to 2020 to make that decision.

Butch was bad...but i will say the year before he was fired he DID have us ranked as a top 10 team after wins over Florida and Georgia...and a 4th quarter lead on Bama....and we won our bowl game convincingly. Some will say that was all Dobbs....and probably be right. Now he DID of course lose to Vandy...which is NEVER acceptable...but if I remember correctly we had a TON....a TON...of injuries. But what he did the following year...only winning 4 games is totally unacceptable and he deserved to be fired for that. Going from a top 10 team to total bottom of the barrel in less than a year is inexcusable. Rare to see a program fall that far that fast.....but after the Georgia game you could of almost had the feeling.."we're back". But man did that fall apart quick.

I agree with a lot of this post, but only with the caveat that the talent he recruited was underdeveloped and heavily misused/ underused. It is for these reasons he was chopped.

Read The Jones section in Mark Nagi’s book, “Decade of Dysfuction.” If you’re still on the fence, read “Empowered” by Celina Summers and Tom Mattingly. That should charge your mind.

Jones was an insecure tyrant that knew he wasn’t good enough for this job. So he intimidated the media and his players to keeping their mouths shut.

The fact he can’t even get hired says it all. One more year? He should’ve been fired after he started the losing streak to S Car and Vandy.

You are combining years. In 2015, Butch couldnt run a 2 minute drill with a rocket scientist at QB against UF (the chart game). 2015 was year we played Bama close.

In 2016, we beat UF and UGA but Bama stomped a mudhole in us....

Florida and Georgia were garbage. He had the talent to beat Bama and predictably choked.

Right the 2016 game was the biggest lay down and take it game I’ve ever seen. There was never any effort to win that one. He just wanted to get out of there and get to the next game, which made the collapses against SC and Vandy even worse.

There is so much win in this thread that I have to give the OP some props for the sheer results. Happy offseason everyone. OP, you've made it pass quicker!

4 pages from a single post. Others have said this is poor trolling, but 4 pages of responses.....that's pretty impressive for a single troll post. He never had to poke back in to stir the pot, never got into a debate, just a one hit 4 page troll job.

The post is FOS, but it was clearly meant to be.

I say bravo, sir. Bravo.

Oregon State wanted him (after 2017) and he refused to interview with them.
Why did this not activate the "reasonable effort to get hired" clause of his UT contract?
