Butch Jones on Mike & Mike

I don't know about guys getting killed because of their candor. Spurrier was praised and admired for it, Les Miles is seen as half nuts, half lovable, and now Bielema is getting love for saying what's on his mind and being colorful.

To me there's a good balance that could be struck and it seems to me that these days, it's the guys who don't answer questions really at all and just pour on the cosch speak getting the most criticism. I don't know what the answer is and I certainly understand staying on message/getting your message out. I just think Butch could be more balanced and articulate with how he goes about doing it.

That being said, if he gets to Atlanta in December this year, I couldn't care less what he does or doesn't say.

My bad. How he goes about doing what?

That's true and it was an obvious crutch to avoid tough questions. What bothered me even more was the 'we need to work like heck' line or his use of 'dad gum'. I like that Butch doesn't use the southern lingo.

HEY!!! What the hell is wrong with Southern lingo?

Butch is coming up on ESPN momentarily. They just finished with Mullen.

Well that was short. Butch likes country music and does the family finances, and the team doesn't call him Sgt Carter. That is all.

Exactly... People want candor and then kill guys for being honest. That's why we get coachspeak.

During an interview like this it would be fine if he was more open. Not so much his personal life, but talk about the players, tell the story about how they determined Dobbs could co-pilot the plane and joke about being nervous with the rest of the guys. Wrap that into "but Josh never showed any signs of hesitation, everyone was nervous but his confidence never wavered. That confidence is why the players voted him one of our team leaders. That was a big deal because this is the 1st time we've had the same guys as team leaders for a season"

See how easy it is to get off of coach speak, talk about the team, tell an interesting/funny story, and not end up at Rommel and bamboo.

CBJ leads by example. If he doesn't want the rest of his team to go around acting like a Jackwagon, he doesn't get to act like one either.

Exactly! Did you see the reporters trying to get the TN players to respond to the FL smack talk. They wouldn't. Stayed on message. Dobbs said I'll focus on FL the week we play them. He said they focus on each day. Pure class.

You're right, he wasn't. But he was a piker compared to Butch who's on another level IMO.

About the only thing that bothered me with Phil was when he was asked something specifically about the game his team just played and he'd typically answer that he had to go back and look at the film to know what happened. Didn't inspire confidence.

My favorite Fulmer post games were always
(post game after a UF loss)
"We couldn't get the running game going. We only rushed for 55 yards and we're going to work hard and get that fixed"
(Next week after rushing for 170 on UMASS Tech)
"We worked on the run game all week and got it fixed and the results show that"

LOL no, we played a weak team and were able to out athlete them, the weaknesses from the UF game are still there

His words are for the players and staff at UT. Every word is for their benefit.

So he flies up to Connecticut to interview with ESPN so he can send some coded messages to Thig and DeBord and Gillespie and Mahoney, et al? Uhhhh.....can't he just do that everyday in his staff meetings, in the facility, on the phone, on the practice field?

And while I do understand that coaches oftentimes are talking to their players when they're being interviewed, those coaches still have their fans, the ones that support the program and ultimately make their jobs possible, who want, crave, demand and deserve information on the program they support. And, IMHO, he could do a better job with how he communicates to and through the media.

Yes, I liked what JRM said the most, something about not being chatty. They were all on the same page. A player coached team stood out too. The Vols are focused on making the Vols the greatest they can be and then let's see where we end up. Booger said Butch would change his tune about playing to their potential if they went 3-9. A heathy #120 giving their all, will set good records.

It wouldn't surprise me if the players graded him on every interview. Nobody want a coach saying anything that would embarass the whole program. Remember the list in his pocket.

Plenty of cliche's to go around.

I liked Fulmer's "Pound the rock" & "Work like heck"

Majors had "I don't believe I've ever seen a team/game/year with more_______"
and "Dadgum it, ______", "I love my sister, so I don't mind kissing her" (after every tie)

And the guy from 1980 through 1998 that called in almost every week and said "Hey John, why don't we throw to the tight end more?"

Wonder how many Butchisums he had?

He needs to review a dictionary once in awhile and expand his vocabulary, "it's critical", "resiliency", etc. It really gets annoying, on the plus side, as long as he's winning I can stand it. As long as he doesn't go to the dark side (Krispy Kreme).

He used to make some of the dumbest statements. Made you wonder who was really running things: Chavis & Cutcliffe I guess.
