Butch Jones just bet his career

Butch Jones just bet his tenure at UT on a man who knows X's and O's. Butch didn't make this decision lightly. He made the adjustment to his coaching staff that he felt was necessary. He evaluated his team, and made a calculated move, to give his players the tool on offense they needed to be more successful. I believe this will prove to be one of his biggest recruiting gets yet. Yes, coaches have to be recruited too! Butch just landed the guy he wanted, and after the press conference, it was clear to me the reasons he chose DeBord!

Butch has done nothing during his two years as HC to cause anyone to doubt his ability to recruit top level talent players and coaches. Many complained about the "Cincinnati" and Big East staff he was bringing into the almighty SEC assuring all of us they would not be able to recruit and we were doomed for more mediocrity as a result of his hire. The decision to hire Buth Jones and choices for his staff have all been successful to date as things are headed in the direction we all want, and this decision should and will be evaluated by Butch on an annual basis. If it doesn't work out, I have a hunch CBJ will find another coach he believes can do the job, and without asking any of us on VN who that should be.

Butch Jones has had two stellar recruiting classes, but his record after 2 years at UT is a less-than-stellar 12-13. For him, 2015 is the money year, the payoff after 2 years of great recruiting. He needs 8, maybe 9 regular season wins to show that he and his staff can mold all that football talent into a winning team.

So what has he done at this most critical juncture in his career? He's hired as OC an old crony who hasn't done much of anything as a football coach in the past ten years. Jones is betting that DeBord will somehow blossom into a first-rate OC in the toughest league in football - a coach whose football acumen equals the talent of UT's 4- & 5-star recruits.

In essence, Butch Jones has bet career on DeBord. If UT stumbles against, say, UGA, UF, and Mizzou again, if we have blowout losses to OU & Bama because of an inept offence and just plain dumb playcalling, fingers will be pointed. But not at DeBord, rather at Butch Jones. He will have lost the huge bet he's made. In which case, Jones will be remembered for 2 things: a) a legacy of terrific football talent for the new HC we hire in 2016, and b) the guy who chose an ole pal over a career as HC at Tennessee.

2015 will be a very interesting year of UT football.

Ok thats the glass half empty look at the hire. If debord does well & the team thrives as many are predicting then they will build a monument & name streets & babies after cbj! JMHO

Bottom line... The x&o`s are only as good as the abilities of the players. The exciting thing about this hire is the potential changes in play calling vs down and distance. This ole coach has had those things beat into him. Last season several times plays were called on third 3 third 4 that left you scratching your head. I think Beborg makes positive changes in the in game side of coaching that only experience can bring. That's what we're getting with this hire! You guys should relax.... If he had hired a young guy our promoted coach z and we struggled. It would have hurt their coaching careers not his. He is at Tennessee to stay...

And we will laugh at this post as we do at those who said Butch could not recruit at this level.

The Op is just another doomsday nega-vol who has nothing better to do than criticize the program and coach(es). If the OP really thinks Butch made such a bad decision then maybe he should go find Butch and tell him personally, tell him how much smarter he is than the head coach. Tell Butch that he should just quit because the Op knows all. Just wasting our time.

Fail. And not even an original one at that - but a cliched, trite, and banal fail.
Hey if you're gonna fail, might as well make it the best, amirite?

Prone to hyperbole much? The DeBord hire doesn't thrill me either, but this is a ridiculous post.

Exactly... Talk about trying to write a self fulfilling prophecy.. If things go slightly wrong this dude will think he's nostrodomis

This obsession with the OC is stupid.
Superior talent and consistent execution beats "clever" play calling.
Randy Sanders was deemed a dope when he was here. Coincidentally, our talent and depth wete declining. After languishing in Lexington for a while, he goes to talent rich FSU, wins about 30 in a row and a NC.
DeBord is an adult with lots of experience, and he'll call the game the way Butch tells him to.
Give it a rest.

Watch out. If you ain't pumping sunshine, the hordes of homers rush in and start with their knife-throwing routine. After the presser, it's pretty clear DeBord is about the only guy who was willing to come in and learn Butch's offense. All others would have wanted to install their own.

I really have to wonder about Bajakian's leaving. Still can't see him leaving on his own volition, to be a QB coach in the NFL, unless he got ticked off about all the grief he got from the fanbase during the past 2 seasons.

He was about to see a major step forward in this team's fortunes, and bailing toward the completion of a rebuilding process? Doesn't make any sense. I wonder if all the troubles the offense faced, trying to run the ball and protect the QB, made CBJ encourage Bajakian to "look around."

I trust Butch. I think he is taking UT back in the right direction. But I do agree with you on one point, OP... '15 is gonna be an interesting year for us.

Let me get this straight you think we are going to fire CBJ over an OC hire and he will have 2 possibly 3 top 5 recruiting classes by 2015 going into 2016 season.

Jones will be here at least 2018 and my bet is that he will be here a lot longer than you will be posting on this Board.

He continues to spew his venom at every opportunity. Ignore and enjoy the state of our football program. The future is so bright that these Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Vandy fans are in a panic mode. I think it is refreshing to see them squirming again.

OP you have been Doolied, bad coach, bad hire. Dooley Should never have been hired to begin with. Had no goals, vision and could not plan for the future.

Jones is not Dooley. He has made great strides with this program and will continue to do so. It is time to quit talking the what if scenarios and let this play out.

Original contract was to 2018 and he will be given every opportunity to reach that contractual agreement. Hart will not fire him before then and by the time we get to that point it will be a moot point anyways. He has been given an extension.

The program was awful when Jones arrived and it is making steady progress. Not sure that Coach Bajakian wasn't asked to leave. If he was then Jones was again making moves for improvement. Fit is important and so is being comfortable with your assistants and staffers. Not so sure that this was not the right move.

One thing that is truly an indicator was the Staff that had a chance to leave but stayed. This should tell you that things are falling into place.

Butch pretty much made it clear. You want a link, google the Debord presser your damn self. My fancard is every bit as legit as yours, chief....and you and your homer buds don't get to dictate who is and who isn't a fan.

Some of us choose to think for ourselves, rather than be a bunch of .....

UT needs to win 8-9 games minimum in 2015. If they don't, imo it doesn't matter who is OC. All of their jobs will be in jeopardy going forward. Recruiting is one thing. Hart isn't paying 3 million plus a year to a guy because he can recruit. At this point it's win. Time for excuses is over.
