We somehow managed to get some creativity against alabama and their DL that's arguably more talented and not arguably better coached than Missouri's.

I wonder if maybe Mizzou watched some film and saw Dobbs in action, knew the OL was weak and attacked that weakness? If I coached a team playing Tn right now that weak OL would be the place to attack. You can drop several and take the pass away or attack a weak link and make the QB make a play in 2 seconds. Mizzou took the latter approach. Vandy can't. This is the worst OL I have seen at UT and until we can't say that we will struggle. Tony Romo who is notorious for blowing games was given 9 seconds to find Dez Bryant for the winning TD. When we have a line that can get a yard when we have to have it or protect a QB at a critical point then we will be great. Until then we will struggle.

I found a description of stupidity that I found appropriate for these knee-jerk reactions. "Stupidity may be innate, assumed or reactive- a defense against grief or trauma." I would call it ignorance, but the blatant disregard of facts prevents me from doing so. In your defense, your emotional investment prevents you from considering said facts.

How come ESPN game analysts easily recognized that Dobbs should have been moved out of pocket which would have kept the defense honest and therefore given him more time to set up and throw down field or make short throws on the run to move the chains. Instead Butch/Bajakian turned him into Worley and let the Mizzou defense tee off on him all night.

Because Jones thought he needed to play conservative and make it a field position game that they could pull out in the 4th qtr. There would be more risks in what you suggest so they didn't do it.

I don't understand why but Jones sort of steps outside of himself sometimes and becomes a hyper-Fulmer. If you haven't guessed by now... I loath "play not to lose". Give it your best shot and let the chips fall where they will.

You got some that want the coach fired anytime they lose a game, and then you got some that like the coach and defend criticism even when its warranted.

Im somewhere in the middle. This staff has upgraded the talent on the field without a doubt but to say I feel confident that they can coach against the best in this league wouldnt be accurate at this point. He ll field the most talent next year that we have in a while, we ll see what he does with it.

And you've got a lot that just assume a poster laying criticism on TCHFCATUTK means they want him fired despite the poster saying otherwise.

Hello to all from a VOL FAN IN AFGHANISTAN.
The lost to Mizz this weekend showed we have gained ground and have some ways to go an this season has shown us that also. I do hope that our OC will look and realize that Dobbs is a better QB when we are running our offense at high tempo break neck speed. The o-line has proven that in this manner it is efficient. I understand the depth issues but it also creates the needed big plays and keeps the opponents defense gassed and not being able to sub. The mind of Dobbs reacts and his performance is truly better when we are in complete hurry up.
The Defense played well and I look at what happened as far as the suspensions as a good thing in a certain way for it gave our coaches a real look at what we have for options for the future and a head start on preparing the defense for next year now. We will go bowling and that will be the best thing for team 119.
Coach Jones will settle down for he sometimes is to emotionally into the game and has lapses on being the tactful coach that he can be and the influx of talent that he is recruiting will help him a great deal. He is truly invested in his program and the young men he has. VOL NATION be understanding and patient we will be rewarded as we have been this year. I do not post often and apologize for the long post. It's bowling time in TENN. after next week. GO BIG ORANGE!!!!!!

Well this no risk taking approach keeps failing time after time (second year in the row). When you are an underdog you want to pull out all the stops especially when you have a young but very talented team - have some fun and let them make plays. Good thing will happen if you are brave instead of afraid of your own shadow.

I agree. We aren't protecting a perfect season. I bet outside the only offensive scoring drive of the night. The one we decided to try after the game was essentially over, I bet dobbs didn't throw the ball 10+ yards down field 5 times the whole game. Every pass was a hb or wr screen. We had terrible o line play but we could have done something to get the ball down the field. They weren't even blitzing.

Spurrier used to do something kind of interesting once in awhile. He'd protect with 8 and run a play action two man pattern. Hit it big... or throw it away. Either way, teams couldn't crowd the LOS and short zone areas when he pulled that out once or twice per game.

I think there is a psychological effect on a team as well. It tells them that the coaches do not trust them to go win the game... that somehow the only way they can win is by "managing" the game.

Like you and others have said, that's not the message a young, talented team really needs to hear.

I love how the sunshine pumpers spent the past two weeks talking about how great everything was, how we matched better against Mizzou in every category, but after the game, they are like we played a lot better team and got beat. They can change their story, but people doubt the in game ability of our coaching staff? THE SHAME!

It was a close matchup, with the talent and home field advantage to UT. Both teams played sloppily, UT with a couple of turnovers and Mizz with about 1047 yards of penalties. UT had a huge field position advantage.

Bottom line, UT got out coached in a close game, and lost. Similar to UGA x2, UF x2, Vandy x1.

There will be disagreement and debate, as usual for a public forum, but it is ludicrous for some to proclaim the deity of Jones and Co. sacrosanct.

As to the OP, CBJ has landed one great class. If he can continue to bring in top 10 classes even when legacies are not available, and upgrade his support staff, he might (a la Saban) become SEC competitive. Most UT fans will likely be satisfied with a bowl trip every other year, and an occasional 8 or 9 win season. But firing him now would be a complete disaster, and I can't imagine anyone seriously supporting it.

Quite a few of the players looked emotionally drained Saturday night, which wasn't surprising considering the week they have been through.

The team lost the captain and leader of the defense in circumstances that are sickening (whether he is guilty or not). Personally, I don't think there was much the coaches could do that could've helped the players respond.

I would say we will enjoy CBJ for about another 10-12 years . By that time we will have at least 3 SEC Titles and one National title. By that time, college football will be a tag game and everyone will be attending track meets.

Bottom line, Derek Dooley actually knows more about coaching football than 99.9999% of VN posters.

But he is still a horrible coach who made easily identifiable errors.

I havent seen butch lose a game yet where he had the best talent on the field.....I know some of you think Vandy last yr, but Franklin had 2 QBs that were better than a true freshman Dobbs was that night. He had the best RB (Seymour). JF had the best player on the field by far in Matthews and he had a better more athletic defense. Some of you will say Florida this yr but Florida's defense was superior by a wide margin to Tennessee and their OL was able to protect and get enough on a short field to win the game. Florida's defense will have more players in the NFL than Tennessee's entire sr and jr classes combined!

When Butch has the best team and he ****s his pants, then I might agree but so far he's in a knife fight with a switch....

Yeah. Let's shut down the board since no one's thoughts are criticisms are valid... including yours. On second thought... why don't you just quit coming here since no discussion seems worthy of having in your presence.

That said... You want to argue that what we saw Saturday was "playing smart"? In case you didn't notice... UT LOST. They lost while having MORE than sufficient talent to win. I guess you think it takes some sort of PHD in football to figure out that that wasn't the "smartest" thing they could have done.

Play calling became vanilla and predictable. They didn't stretch the field. They played O hoping against hope that Mizzou wouldn't find enough O to beat them.

That's many things... "smart" ain't one of them.

Unfortunately next year. I believe the SEC gives you 3 years and if your not winning the bylaws require that the coach be fired.
