Butch Jones Discussion

Local radio show here in Macon area was doing a remote yesterday, and the host was going to bring up the "Champions of Life". The host (Bill Shanks) started with "Butch Jones..." and a TN fan walks by and finishes the sentence with "...needs to be fired".

What top 5 teams are you referring to?

TX A & M? We took them to OT with 7 turnovers at their place.

Ole Miss - Vandy beat them

LSU - FL beat them

Auburn - GA beat them

We would beat every team in the west except maybe Bama.

We are dealing with unproveable hypotheticals aren't we?

Iowa beat Michigan, but lost to North Dakota State...so I guess ND state could beat Michigan? Wait I know. Northwestern beat Iowa who again, beat Michigan. We beat Northwestern in the bowl game last year like a red headed step kid, which means we could beat Michigan. So we should be in the top 4 right?

^^^That's how stupid you sound.

No teams play good 4 quarters every game. As long as our record is improving we are getting better. This isn't 12 Tennessee techs every year. We play in the SEC.

I do agree that we should have won the east this year. It's disappointing.

No teams play good for every game but Bama plays good 95% of the time and UT plays good 40% of the time.

Oklahoma better than VT
Last year UG, Mizzu, Florida , SC better than this years UG , Mizzu. Florida, SC
So our record should be better but I am saying if we played OU and last years Georgia we would not have a better record
So how can you say basically last years UT team with the addition of some good freshman and another year of "development "?? Under Jones that has played below their talent level for much of this years games ,
Just because the record is better be considered improvement???

An improvement in win total. Yes.
An improvement in football played, or indication jones has improved in coaching..absolutely not!

What does a 9 win team winning 5 mean? If a team wins 5 games, they are a 5 win team not a 9 win team.

Because the argument is that Nebraska was/is perpetually a 9 win team and Riley is somehow breaking an impenetrable ceiling by winning 10 or 11 games. (Pardon my sarcasm)

My point was Riley took a team that had not won less than 9 games since 2007 (and only 4 times since 1970) and only won 5 (6 if you count APR-ing their way into a bowl, which I don't).

Maybe I dont get the argument. Nebraska is 9-2 right now.

We are speaking in terms of Nebraska over the last decade or 2.

The claim was Nebraska is an example of a team that fired a 9 win coach and improved (since they have the chance to win 10 or 11 games).

I and several other disagreed based on the fact that their schedule is quite weak and they are 0-2 in their only Top 25 games (one of which they lost 62-3).

I also wanted to know since it was argued that Riley was supposedly an upgrade for taking a perennial 9 win team to potentially 10 or 11 wins...then what does that make his 2015 season? A season where he took a team that had won less than 9 games only 4 times since 1970...and won 5.

I think you proved vol 82s point. Lol.

This place used to only be intolerable after a loss. Now, it is almost every day. Worst thing about it, we are 8-3.

its amazing really. i joined this forum when i was a senior in high school. now the older i've got, it seems this board is more and more juvenile to me. is it me getting older or has this board really changed that much?

And I've always considered myself of average intelligence. This board now makes me feel like I should be in MENSA. And that can't be right!

Do you really want one of the most incompetent AD's in America, Bama Dave, in charge of hiring our next coach? Think about that.

No, thank you. Let Butch have 2017 to prove himself to his new boss.

I just hope the next AD isn't as dumb as the last two.

OK...prove your point on why Dave Hart is the worst AD in America. Talk is cheap, troll.

I want butch gone but he deserves 1 more year. I want to see if he is smart enough to make the changes to his staff that needs to be addressed or he sticks to his usual hard headed self. Either way I smell a 6 and 6 or 7 and 5 season next year and that will do him in.

Butch Jones should be fired imediately after the vandy game win or lose. Then we need to go out and hire a real coach. Inexcusable to not win the east with it down, and tennessee being this talented. Butch is nothing but a snake oil salesman who promises the world to recruits but is a ****ty game day coach.

Might want to change username to tennlunatic.

The Nebraska argument comes down to coaching. I have said that from very beginning. Riley is taking a 5 win team in his first year to 11 wins if they win a bowl game.

Y'all posted Butch'a record vs Rileys in a few posts back. Coaching is the reason why Butch isn't 5-8 wins better in his time here. Riley has won the games he has too at Nebraska. Can't say the same for Butch.

And the schedule argument-- Take Alabama off Tennessee'a schedule and it gets weaker. Our toughest team becomes an overrated A&M team. Take Ohio State off Nebraska'a schedule and it gets weaker. Their roughest team becomes Wisconsin. Riley won the games he was supposed too. Butch has not.

Still think he'll get 11 wins?

Here's the final

30 point loss to unranked Iowa. Hard to believe how far Riley has taken Nebraska in such a short amount of time.

How many folks in here wanted Charlie Strong? Now Butch needs to go? Time will tell if he can lead us to the top but he's earned my patience.

exactly....and Tom Herman as well...LMFAO that some of you think this guy's a genius.

UCONN last year = loss to Vandy, UK or Mizzou

SMU, Navy and Memphis this year = SCAR, TAMU and Mizzou or Vandy

Mizzou game isn't look as bad seeing what they did to the Hogs.

CBJ may not be as elite as we want him to be....but he's about on par with everyone's pick of the week the past 2 years.

Agree. Here is another thing. Keep and eye on LSU. They have Ogre as the backup plan if Hermann ends up at Texas. It just shows that there are not that many elite coaching prospects out there, and they are not lining up at the door of top-tier job openings.

LSU is every bit as good a job as Tennessee. If they end up with Ogre, that is a huge letdown from Les Miles. It ain't that easy to make a great hire anymore. Our recent history confirms that as well.

If Butch were to leave on his own accord, Charlie Strong would be worth a strong consideration. He had a lot of headwinds at Texas.
