Butch Jones Discussion

Immediately after the vandy game win or lose. Then we need to go out and hire a real coach. Inexcusable to not win the east with it down, and tennessee being this talented. Butch is nothing but a snake oil salesman who promises the world to recruits but is a ****ty game day coach.

Do they still make snake oil? Good one man

Les Miles: Proven commodity, national championship winning coach, coached in the brutal SEC West.
Butch Jones: Derek Dooley's signature win (he was not favored to win the game, afair), co-champion in the MAC, coached in a way down SEC East

If you think hiring over the hill and outdated Les Miles is a good idea you really need to find a new team

This is the line of thinking that led to Fulmer being dismissed and the the darkest years in UT Football. Leave Butch alone, he still needs our support and appreciation for leading us out of the dark Dooley years. In a few years after this is completely his program and players let's see where this program is going. I have a sneaky suspicion that UT will be better of for sticking with him.

This is completely his program now. Has 1-3 Dooley recruits and that is it. 4 years is enough to determine if a coach can be the guy to win here. But it takes 7 years to build a program. Would love to get Phil'a take on this.

Yeah let's pay 12 million dollar a to fire our coachcoming off the best season in a decade and go into a bidding war against LSU, Texas, and maybe Notre Dame for the good HCs available with a lame duck AD and no chancellor.

Surely nothing bad will happen.

This is exactly who we are. A program trying to remain competitive on the cheapest budget possible. We could care less about championships as long as we have fannies in the stands.

Except you don't really need to promise anything to a roster of 3 stars.

You do realize UT is 8-3 and has scored 167 points in last 3 games and beat UF on the field in what ended up in convincing fashion and you want to fire him?

You do realize that LSU completely botched yesterdays game (possibly for Vegas) and your opinion of firing or not firing Butch hinged on LSU winning or losing yesterday? It's college football man

Why did you and every other idiot put such high expectations on this UT team this year? You set yourself up for let down.

I, predicted an 8-9 win team based on the roster and depth I saw....

Hey, you guys we the ones who predicted the championship, not Butch! It feels pretty good to have more wins than loses with a defense that is descimated with broken bones and torn muscles.....7 to 3 games are boring.

Vegas has nothing to do with it. LSU was a 14.5 point favorite. Had LSU scored, it still preserves the spread you idiot.

Have you ever heard a something called the "money line"?

Not saying that had anything to do with it though.

It's obvious some of you posters have never owned or been responsible for running a business.

Oh, you have?

Have you, or would you, handle this situation the way you're suggesting it be handled now?

Yes. Because we have used bandaid budget options for 7 years now hasn't worked. To win big, you gotta invest big. And it's not a resources thing either. We just have mushy decision makers who want to win on a budget and look like the smartest people in the room.

If you mean investors, then yes. Because in my business history, our startup is doing damn well for being in business for less than two years. But what do I know.

That hasn't changed, yet.

That's just one of my "points".

I think the bulk of the talent was out for most of the season.

Lets go through the list.

We lost both 5* DTs for the season, plus the person starting in front of them. Lost both starting LBs which were on preseason all SEC list and your all American DB for most of season. We lost our "star" RB because he quit, at same time Bama took out our other star RB for a few games on a cheap shot. Our entire starting OL has been out at some point. On bright side Richmond is back in the starting lineup.

I agree no excuse for losing to SC. I just don't know if these injuries are flukes or equipment or turf or S&C coach or what.....I can't say UT was most talented team anymore from week 4 onward.

The OP is right. Recruiting has fallen off some and the only way Butch wins more games is if Gaurantano is Cam Newton like. 2017 schedule is much tougher than this years and losing lots of production. The defense doesn't inspire any confidence right now either. Jones' brand of football is just bad. Has been for 4 years. He's getting a pass because he's better than the last guy but that isn't a standard here.

Or best season??? Maybe win wise but that's it. This team has accomplished not much. No division title when that was the main goal so we could play in Atlanta and go to Tampa. Hooray for wins! No brass. Another moral victory season at its best.

I actually don't disagree with that.

But that doesn't change any of the following facts that would make firing Butch right now a bad idea:

1. $12 million buyout.
2. Lame duck AD and no chancellor
3. Gonna have to compete with 2-3 other programs that are more desireable destinations for coaches.
4. Not gonna be a great message to send coaches that we're so trigger happy on coaches who've shown improvement (even if it is overly gradual and maybe behind schedule) in the W-L column.

The timing just isn't right to make a move from Butch. Do I want a better coach? Hell yeah! Do I think firing Butch a week from now would put us in a position tonnakena clear upgrade and ensure a better trajectory than we're currently on? Hell no.
