Butch Jones Contract

College football will out price themselves one day. Money will ruin it and already have in some areas

If Butch is going to have to stay based on $$, then the OC and other must go. Anything other than this scenario and the fanba$e will dwindle and all the $$ that goes with it.
Much
Like Bammer fans who ignore the obvious, team 119 against 2 teams this season has taken 14 point leads into the 4th quarter .... and we want the OC gone ... Is there anyone at VN that can fire a couple of synapses together and come up with a cogent thought why our defense collapses ...given it was supposed to be a team strength this year?

I agree with others on here! Butch really screwed Tenn! Hiring Debord has sealed his fate! I will sit back and watch it unfold! Failure Butch and Debord can't coach a pee wee team! Talk is cheap! Reason he has recruited well is his hype! Former players used Tenn football history to recruit! All this will come back to haunt him! Bottom line Butch is in way over his head! I think everyone is beginning to see it! I knew this shyttttt was to good to be true!

Interesting thread.

First, Cheek is our university's chancellor, not president. I can understand the confusion because DePietro, our president, doesn't appear to care much for sports. As an alumnus and former yearly donor to both UTK academics and athletics, I'm concerned that Cheek, a Florida man, and Hart (castoff from Bama) both are clueless. I won't contribute again, and have made that clear to the fund-raising factions at my alma mater, until Cheek and Hart are gone. Neither bleeds orange and only care about their over-inflated egos.

Someone mentioned Peyton and said he would consider being our OC. He actually mentioned he would consider being our QB coach. Smart money would go with Fulmer or Blackburn at AD, Cutcliffe at HC and Manning on the staff in some compacity.

Butch is a gameday disaster. Our receivers haven't improved. The oline can't pass block, and Butch is too stubborn to revamp that weak right side. Jancek can't adjust on the run and becomes ultra conservative down the stretch. Gimmicks (take your bricks and charts and throw them in the Tennessee River, Jones) and marketing don't win games. Gut instinct, nerves of steel, solid strategy, hard work, talent and luck win games!

I'm not seeing Jones improve 1% each day, enough said.

Finally, I would use Dormady more to boost the passing game, and play Dobbs at multiple positions, including H-back, slot, wide out (perfect for reverses) and RB. Josh can't throw the deep ball accurately on a consistent basis. The true dual threat (Jarrett G) debuts next season.

Go Vols!

That may be the worst bending over a coach with Jones' type resume has ever done to an AD. That is God awful. Dave Hart is the Derek Dooley of AD's.

Those back woods central michigan boys are laughing all the way to the bank riding that hillbilly gravy train. We'll let him go next year and hope we get a reach around from Hart as he screws us again.

By the way, Jones parlayed a, supposed, interest by Michigan to get a contract extension last year. Guess who was running the day to day operations of the UM program at the time?

Mike Debord.

Hold up. You're implying that Michigan didn't really have Butch higher on the list than Harbaugh?

well, which is it? Is Butches contract too high or too low? Tell you what, you go start a money drive and come back and tell us what you got. Their is a reason you're not the AD. As far as this stupid gruden b.s.... gruden wanted nothing to do with us. Because he knew the talent wasn't in place yet.

Well it's here now. Let's make a change before it's too late.

His contract goes through Feb 2021.

If he were theoretically fired On Dec 1, 2015 we would owe him 2 mil per remaining year plus the prorated amount for the remaining 3 months - so really the total amount would be 10.5 mil.

Our damages are also mitigated by whatever job he gets afterwards. Let's say he makes 1 mil per year at his next job. This offsets our costs by roughly 5 mil, leaving our total cost at 5.5 mil.

Quoted for emphasis, as this is a point of importance, yet seems to be overlooked in the buyout discussion. Butch will coach again, and he'll do so immediately. Likely at a mid-major, but he'll make $1M as a head coach.

I used the example elsewhere, but will use here...

They could fire him and he'd take a job @ $1M...cutting the total buyout from $12M to $6M. But for fear of paying the $6M over 6 years, let's say they decide to bring him back for another year to prevent the buyout.

Now, the additional year only reduces the buyout by $1M, but we'll focus on the $6M for now.

If he finishes 6-6 this year, season ticket sales for '16 will drop. If we average 90k in attendance over 6 home games, that leave us 12k short per game, or 72k short for the season. 72k multiplied by $60 per ticket = $4,320,000.

And let's say that 72k spends a conservative $15 each on concessions. That's another $1,080,000 in concessions.

A total of $5,400,000 in lost revenue just to bring him back...only to have to fire him in '16 and still pay him $5M over 5 years to leave then. Would you rather spend $1M or lose $5M?

If this guy returns, then the university not only hates football, but it also doesn't give a damn about making money.

Now that we are having serious questions about the abilities of Butch as head coach, I want to remind everyone that it goes further up the ladder than Jones in terms of questionable decision making. Dave Hart and the university have structured Butch Jones' contract, recently extended, in a manner that guarantees Jones $2 million per year for each year remaining on his contract if he were to be fired. His contract runs through 2021. That means we would owe him $12 million dollars if he were to tank this and we wanted to go in a different direction. The mind numbing stupidity of a deal like this demonstrates that we have a serious problem with those making decisions on the Hill. Who, in their right mind, hamstrings a program by creating such a long term contract obligation with high financial obligations to a coach who hadn't won anything, yet? It tells me two things:

1. We aren't firing Jones any time soon.

2. Hart should be on any hot seat above the one Jones may or may not be on. That contract is completely unconscionable for an AD to make to steward a department. It also means, to me, that his horse is hitched to the Jones wagon. He should not have the ability to make these types of decisions again.

Whether or not we should actually fire Jones is beside the point. The reality that there are people wondering and concerned about Jones' ability with five years left on that albatross is very, very troubling.

Well first off it's dumbfounding that he was able to make this decision to begin with. We hired the bama assistant ad (because they are good) who by the way is a LIFE LONG BAMMER... To I make this program defining decision. No committee involved. No checks and balances. Just...you seem ok. Hi make the most important decisions for the next decade regarding our football program. I went ape $hit when it became obvious he was going with Butch.
Secondly, although it a lot of money it's spread out over a long period of time and we do have the resources to pay it and pay a new coach. The football program makes way over 100 million per year. With all the sec money ect...the money is there. But hart will resist the change with his life. His only job was to find a successful football coach. For him to part with Butch would be to admit defeat. He'll have to be fired before Butch. And Butch would have to tank the season for that to happen. It likely won't happen this year so we are stuck with a guy that has a long history of being a total freaking idiot. Like it or not it's what we got

Thanks,,,Hart is the biggest goober in Tennessee AD history
Still though he should have the power(if losing continues) to turn off head coaches headset and turn it all over to the best OC money can buy.

Payton Manning will take over as OC next year and save the ship. All Butch Jones will have to do is walk around on the sideline and act like he's doing something.

And look where all that money has Texas.

Their AD got fired for sucking too, and he still hired a guy that can coach circles around Jones, which is not anything special.

The football programs number one problem is that its most influential donor and booster, former player even, specifically does not want to hire the best coaches available, because he doesn't want to be known as a football school.

Butch Jones’ new contract resets buyout at $4M - GoVolsXtra Story

Butch Jones buyout is 4 million. You guys are way off base with 10-12 million?? Am I missing something? And its no 4 million per year for the remainder of the contract. Its 4 million total, and drops at increments until the contract runs out. but it is still a one time payment, or broken into payments to total 4 million. Not 4 million a year for the remainder of the contract.

Did you not read the actual article that you linked? 4 mil is the amount he has to pay if he leaves, or the school that he goes to would pay UT for him. If he is fired, it is 2 mil per contract year, so its 12 mil right now, or 10 mil after 3/1/2016, and goes down 2 mil every year on that day after that.

I was interested in comparing Butch’s buyout to other SEC coaches. I didn’t have time to go find all the coaches’ buyouts, but I did find Malzahn, Miles, and Pinkel. I tried to find Freeze’s buyout details but did not see it anywhere.

Malzahn signed new 6 year contract June 2014 with a 2.2 million per year buyout. He had just gone 12-2 with an SEC championship and national title game appearance. He had also won a national championship with Auburn as an OC.

Miles – signed extension in January 2013 taking him through 2019 season (7 seasons). At the time, he was 85-21 at LSU with a national championship, another championship game appearance and 2 SEC titles. If fired in first three years of contract, the buyout is $15 million so that equates to 2.14 million per year if things had gone quickly south.

Pinkel signed a new deal in 2014 fresh off an SEC East title. His buyout is $350,000 per year remaining on his contract.

Does anyone know why UT was not the least bit interested in hiring Tommy Tuberville . The man has one of the best records ever in college football. Look at how he manages games at Cincinnati.

He was one I kind of wanted them to talk to but I could see why people would not have wanted him. I just wanted a "safe" hire. I think Cut would have been the safest of hires in 09 and 12. I did think Butch was a solid hire and I still do in spite of my concerns and I think, barring a 4-5 win season, he should and will deserve at least 4 years.

What on earth did Butch Jones show in 2014 to deserve a contract extension to 2021? Two top 5 recruiting classes isn't enough to warrant that sort of extension on such a huge guaranteed buyout; that is reserved for coaches who have won their respective conference titles at their current school under their current contract or for coaches who have proven they are elite. Gotta win at the highest level to prove you are elite.

Hart should be canned this year if possible. But then again, I wonder what his contractual framework looks like. I bet he's cushioned himself nicely incase such a thing were to happen.

This has been trumpeted over the last couple weeks on this board, but I really would be in favor of bringing Fulmer back as AD. He is THE MAN for the job. He has dedicated his life to the work and to the university. No one else bleeds orange like Phil.

I'm not sure what the AD will do if this fan base endures another mediocre season in 2016.
