Butch Jones: 2 bowls, 2 well prepared teams

People see Saban go to Bama and contend in his second year, or Malzahn make it to the natty in his first, or Harbaugh win big at Michigan this year, and they think anyone can do that. But those situations were ones where the talent was already in place and all they needed was competent coaching. Butch had to get more talent in here before he had a chance to be more than mediocre, no matter how well he coached them up.

He showed last year that he could coach. He put the youngest team in FBS onto the field and had a winning season in the SEC. But the reason he had to do that was because virtually all of the talent he had was what he and his staff had recruited. As I recall, a lot of people who know a lot about college football thought we'd be 4-8 or even 3-9, not 7-6.
Malzahn hasn't been consistent either. Those guys that do well so fast, except Saban, set themselves up to get fired if they aren't consistent. If Malzahn, for example, doesn't win next year he will be a victim of his own early success and be fired. Butch is consistent. I'm glad he wants to be here under all this pressure from a large passionate fan base and is our coach.

Saban don't grow on trees, Malzahn brought in one freak player. Where is Aubrun now? Butch came in with no depth at any position. He's recruited well and we are starting to see depth built brick by brick. Our win total has improved each of the three years he's been here. He has a plan and to build a team from ground up takes time. I for one am happy with the process, to bad others can't see this. I want a championship NOW and if I don't get it I'm gonna take my ball and go home. ( blue font). It takes time to change a culture and build quality depth, all which are needed to win championships.

One question- who is Albury?

Butch has done an outstanding job preparing the boys to play and compete at a high level each of the last 2 years in the bowl games. He deserves much credit for it. We've all seen what happens to even the really good teams when they aren't ready to go...they lose to less talented teams. What he's done to get the team to play well and with great effort has been impressive.

Agreed. Especially when you know you are more talented than the other team it can be very tricky to get those talented players motivated to play at 100% (and to make sure nobody gets distracted with everything that's going on around bowl games). What is impressive about this team is that the key players/leaders like Hurd, Dobbs, Barnett seem very mature and understand how to prioritize - and coaches should get a lot of credit for that.

You can't just automatically minimize the accomplishment though based on the result.

We just beat the living hell out of a 10 win, Power 5 team. No...they clearly weren't as athletic as we were, but they weren't some directional school either. That was a quality opponent.
But they are a directional school. Northwestern? Lol

Not arguing but the fact CBJ has assembled enough talent to put us in position to actually overmatch teams is a compliment in itself. You'd be hard pressed to find a bowl team we could overmatch 3 years ago.

Be hard pressed to find a NON bowl team we could overmatch 3 years ago

They were ranked #12, won 10 games and beat Stanford. What's the point of minimizing who they are as if we just beat Kentucky?

Agreed. Putting them down only minimizes the victory. I'm as nega as they come. Efil4ageN, if you will. The Northwestern victory was a huge win. They were not in our class, but still a massive showing based on the numbers.

Im still trying to figure out how the team I saw on Friday managed to beat Stanford. The only explanation I can come up with is Stanford must have been completely disinterested in playing that game, which would be unusual for a David Shaw coached team. Everytime I've watched Stanford take the field under Shaw, they play hard, tough, physical football. They would be a nightmare match up for us or most anyone. That NW team didnt look capable of beating Samford, let alone Stanford.

I went back and looked at the box score..they held McCafferty to about 80 yards from scrimmage
